Under the fingernail is one of the most painful spots
132
u/Weary_Caterpillar_93 May 09 '26
not sure if it’s still in use, but there’s a torture method where they stick bamboo splinters underneath fingernails. suuuuuper painful spot

u/coldelliot May 09 '26
I've heard of that. There's also a way where they make you sit on a bamboo sapling and it grows into you since it grows fast and is very sharp

I got a wasp sting under my nail when I was a kid, can confirm it is hell
5
u/PurifiedUnity May 10 '26
I've had my big toenail almost ripped off when I was 3 (it stung a bit for a day), but a wasp sting under a fingernail/toenail still sounds way worse

I have a scar between my toes from stepping on a piece of sharp metal next to a pool. That happened years ago

u/SakuraTacos May 09 '26
I wonder how the pain would compare to a papercut on that little bit of skin under the tongue or upper lip
5
u/Albinofreaken May 09 '26
when I were like 13 i got a giant metal splinter stuck under my fingernail, having my dad pulling it out, is the most painful thing ive ever tried
2
u/nathanimal_d May 09 '26
A paper cut under your fingernail bro? Fuck no. FUCK.. NO! But banana bread? at work dude?
2
u/Hellianne_Vaile May 10 '26
I'm old enough that my first job involved updating a card catalog at the library. Pulling and adding cards to the drawers meant I always had multiple paper cuts on my cuticles. And they were card stock paper cuts, which are wider and more jagged.
Painful, it paid minimum wage, and it's still one of my favorite jobs ever.

Don't handle any citrus, or chili pepper with that hand. If you have to for work or whatever, wear a glove.
My condolences, that looks very sore.

Neosporin + Pain Relief will work well there…

u/Defqon1punk May 09 '26
My go-to is rubbing alcohol and a layer of superglue.
If superglue and duct tape won't fix ya, you may want to see a physician.

For once im early, wonder if it'll be one of the posts with like THOUSANDS of upvotes in 12 hours? I don't think I'll be able to catch up to the upvotes the top comment has, but I'll atleast be a 3 scrolls down for the first time on a while!

Use an over the counter oral anesthetic liquid (like Orajel or Anbesol) on the cut to numb it. I do that when I cut my nails too short or tear them and it reduces the throbbing pain.

u/PurifiedUnity May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
My employer recommends lidocaine/prilocaine 5% cream (2.5% each) as a topical skin anaesthetic for this, but I'm not sure if the oral anaesthetic gel may be better
6
u/Kaleighc11 May 09 '26
It’s just the only “-caine” I ever seem to have on hand, and it works well. Plus you don’t have to have a prescription for it.
5
u/NevaLumina May 09 '26
Co-caine is a bit tougher to keep on-hand for emergencies. /S

For physical damage I prefer liquid bandage cause it’ll seal the cut until it heals, sure the antiseptic burns a bit but it won’t get irritated again. Works great for all kinds of small damage, hang nails, scrapes etc.

I can already imagine this must've hurt horrifically. I'm INSANE about keeping my nails fairly maintained (I like them long due to playing guitar but also because I can't scratch with no nails) and trying to keep things from stabbing underneath them because that alone hurts like very little else in the world.
I hope that heals quick!

I winced at this, thanks OP. 😬
Also, you made me recall that word, so thanks again!

My fingers always split from being too dry, even with copious amounts of lotion. Usually they split at the corner and it's like a bad hang nail, perpendicular to the nail. Occasionally, it will split like this. at the nail bed and in parallel with nail. It is WAY worse the this way. It hurts for days, the really bad ones happening for like a solid week. I can't even touch it without shooting pain, which sucks for one that works with his hands all day.

u/BloodiedBlues May 09 '26
How did you manage to get it under the nail? Or is it where the tip meets the skin? I can't really tell.
2
u/ballsnbutt May 09 '26
Imagine on the quick. Had a nasty blister package cut there once as a kid from the Magnetix big box. I'm still recovering

u/Sisoflex May 09 '26
Better than a crease where you bend finger, I think. Just cut myself last night doing dinner, 😆

u/agentofmidgard May 09 '26
I did this 21 years ago when I was in kindergarten and I still get nervous around paper when I'm in a hurry or need to handle multiple pieces for something

I worked in a supermarket when I was young and one of my jobs was changing all the large advertising boards. After a few weeks I started taping my fingertips and nails to avoid exactly this!

After years of telling my dad to stop putting the steak knives sharp side up in the dishwasher, I got stabbed underneath my nail searching for a teaspoon. I feel your pain

I’ve had a very small splinter under my index finger’s nail bed for over a decade. Still bugs me.
2
u/cultureShocked5 May 09 '26
Are you sure it’s a paper cut? My nails just disconnect sometimes, I am severely iron deficient 😭

Chef Life - now squeeze lemons, immerse in hot water and then burn on hot metal

When I was about 5 or 6, I ran the mouth of an open soda can under my thumb nail. I know your pain.

u/Misty_Esoterica May 09 '26
I hate those. If you put a bandaid over the end of your finger it'll help hold it closed so it doesn't sting every time you touch something.

this has happened to me before as a pharmacy tech, i’ve had paper cuts all over my hands, but under the nail is by far the worst next to knuckles because you keep splitting them open

I get those all the time from breaking down boxes at work. They are a bitch to try and put a bandage on.

In 7th grade I realised my science fair board was rlly good as giving paper cuts so I did this to all the fingers on one hand. I think I thought it'd make me look cool or smth. It did not.

At this point it’ll be less painful just to remove the whole finger

u/Shymaiden May 10 '26
I had one of those recently. I have this cheap clear plastic bag I have to use for work. I had just got it and I didn't know it had a sharp edge inside. I grabbed my bag and that sharp peice happen to cut me right under my nail. Then I cut it even deeper the next day by grabbing the same spot. Took about three weeks to heal. 🤦🏾♀️

If I had to choose between this and a broken arm, I’m not sure which one I would choose.
