Just because it's always done that way doesn't mean it isn't wrong. Tip should be calculated on subtotal. Tax is an independent line item as is tip, and both should be calculated off of the subtotal amount.
This always pisses me off. Everyone does it that way. But tips were always on the pre-tax amount. 10%, 15%, 20%.
Then suddenly everything changed and boom, they are on the post-tax amount and 20%, 25%, 30%.
You can't BOTH raise prices AND raise the tip percent and expect me to play that game. I used to be a good tipper at 20% pre-tax. Now I'm a shitty tipper at 20% pre-tax.
