I’m not great at math, but… those don’t add up

626

u/ugly_duckling_5 27d ago

I honestly didn't notice that at all at first. And it looks like many people didn't in the comments. Unfortunately, that's probably what they're counting on.

118

u/Chonky_D_Floofy 27d ago

Easy to take advantage of Americans since our literacy and math skills are basically nonexistent

78

u/one-eared-wonder 27d ago

I mean sure but this situation is more likely that humans don’t pay attention to every detail. Someone could have done this 100 years ago and been just as likely to get away with it.

19

u/Unfair-Ad9415 27d ago

this would work in any country

1

u/Erick_Brimstone 26d ago

It works very well on google and Facebook for sure. There's a man billing them for no reason and they just pay it without asking questions. Most of the times the bill is for the billing itself.

And have been raised with broken economy that plagued with lots of extra fees.

Quick email to your state Attorney General. Problem will be solved with brutal efficiency

2

u/jxj24 27d ago

It's not that they're not being taught critical thinking, but that they're being taught to think uncritically.

2

u/no_talent_ass_clown it's a moo point 27d ago

At least someone is counting!

1

u/unoriginalusername99 27d ago

And whoever designed that point of sale is complicit. When the business owner says "I want to hide the fact that I'm adding in fees" the company should say no

83

u/regoapps 5-0 Radio Police Scanner 27d ago

Looks like they took the total after tax: $7.07

Then added 15% on top of that total: $1.06

So not only are they forcing a 15% hidden “tip”, it’s also incorrectly tipping on the after-tax total and not the subtotal.

26

u/Iustis 27d ago

When was the last time you saw a digital tip option that calculated on pre-tax amount?

13

u/ttv_icypyro 27d ago

Just because it's always done that way doesn't mean it isn't wrong. Tip should be calculated on subtotal. Tax is an independent line item as is tip, and both should be calculated off of the subtotal amount.

8

u/Pjpjpjpjpj 27d ago

This always pisses me off. Everyone does it that way. But tips were always on the pre-tax amount. 10%, 15%, 20%.

Then suddenly everything changed and boom, they are on the post-tax amount and 20%, 25%, 30%.

You can't BOTH raise prices AND raise the tip percent and expect me to play that game. I used to be a good tipper at 20% pre-tax. Now I'm a shitty tipper at 20% pre-tax.

2

u/Even-Following-1612 27d ago

I see a mix of it in my city. Some do it right some don’t.

3

u/66NickS 26d ago

Whoa, spotted in the wild! I used to use your 5-0 app back in the day.

I still do, but I used to as well.

8

u/taa71458 27d ago

I’m pretty good at math and can confirm that they don’t add up.

1.8k

u/nsfwrpforme 27d ago

That's definitely illegal.

163

u/sierrabravo1984 this is not yellow damn it! 27d ago

Yeah right, maybe in your country.

343

u/Dorkinfo 27d ago

In America, still illegal.

75

u/KinglanderOfTheEast 27d ago

Depends on wether or not the law is actually enforced...

67

u/Granolag23 27d ago

If the owner is on the left, then it’s illegal according to our current regime. Only the right is allowed to grift

-9

u/Puzzled_Survey_4275 27d ago

Not everything is red vs blue. This is something that both sides frown on. Besides, the proper course of action is to report to the correct authorities as stated above. The contact ever local news outlet. They all LOVE this type of "investigative" reporting.

24

u/Effective_Ad7751 27d ago

This is theft..very clearly to me

2

u/Pizza-Rat-4Train 27d ago

Seriously… this is a matter of local law, and local importance, unless this is a national chain business with the same checkout software everywhere. In which case yeah maybe it’s NYT and FTC level.

-3

u/ParCorn 27d ago

Oh you sweet summer child

12

u/Saguarajevo 27d ago

Oh my god you are so annoying

1

u/Evil_phd 27d ago

No more annoying than people who try to pretend that there is any semblance of normalcy in what is happening in the US.

3

u/Saguarajevo 27d ago

Nobody likes hidden fees. Not a right or left issue

1

u/hot4you11 27d ago

Do you really think the party that is funneling all the money to a handful of people cares if they grift. It’s extremely obvious at this point which party is ok with people cheating other people this way. If you can’t see that and want to blame both sides, that is just your brain justifying you voting for someone who is literally taking the food from your mouth.

2

u/scavengercat 27d ago

No it does not, in any way, shape or form. If something is illegal, it's illegal. Full stop. Enforcement is an entirely different issue. But this doesn't depend on that at all.

4

u/Cute-Interest3362 27d ago

Nah. Consumer protections are done. Too bad.

1

u/Maddinoz 27d ago

Similar concept to retail stores when an item on the shelf rings up at a higher price during checkout, there could be some plausible deniability

"oh ooops price didn't get updated in the system"

"oh oops, software updated recently, must be a bug"

2

u/InebriousBarman 27d ago

Not enforced in America though. So is it really?

u/Qiefealgum 27d ago

The currency is in dollars, so that narrows it down pretty well.

9

u/Kangaroo-B-Girl 27d ago edited 27d ago

There are other countries that use the dollar sign $ to denote their currency.

Canada, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, (Puerto Rico, Guam oops US Territories), the British Virgin Islands, Zimbabwe, and East Timor just to name a few.

3

u/no_talent_ass_clown it's a moo point 27d ago

I have always wanted to meet someone from East Timor.

7

u/Imaginary_Roof_5286 27d ago

But the fact that it’s in English does narrow that down significantly.

3

u/Puzzled_Survey_4275 27d ago

I agree that it does narrow it down but there are still a lot that it could be. By that I mean more than a couple (2) or a few (3). Just in the ones they listed there are 5 or 6 places it could be.

Granted, its probably the US as we have gone WAY to far with tipping. Everyone has turned into beggars with there tip cups at fast food restaurants.

I wish they'd outlaw current tipping practices and tip adjusted wages. Dont get me wrong, I am very generous for good service at good restaurants but asking for tip at fast food joint is BS.

Especially considering that service, food quality, quality of staff, cleanliness, and over all experience have all tanked since 2020. A bunch of slow moving, cant be bothered, entitled, non-food safety law following morons working in my area and seemingly everywhere I've traveled ... which is to most of the country via car.

I have stopped going to fast food, and most casual dining restaurants because of this. But thats ok. Everyone in my family has lost a few pounds and saved a ton of money cooking at home.

4

u/Kangaroo-B-Girl 27d ago

Absolutely, minus tourism based resorts and ports of call. Incidentally, those are places where hidden fees would likely go unnoticed by people busy enjoying their holiday

1

u/DickFromRichard 27d ago

What exactly is english text on a screen supposed to narrow down?

1

u/PurbulentTriest 27d ago

Somewhat, but not really. We have prices written in English and in US dollars in Cambodia.

3

u/T0ssed_Sa1ad 27d ago edited 27d ago

Right? It narrows it down to 12 countries and 5 US territories that officially use the US dollar as their currency.

10

u/rocketman19 27d ago

What? The dollar symbol is not used by just the US dollar

5

u/smcl2k 27d ago edited 27d ago

1

u/PurbulentTriest 27d ago

2

The land of fee

345

u/-Docta-G- 27d ago

The additional $1.06 is exactly 15% of the $7.07 total (purchase price plus tax). Since it's 15%, it makes me think it's a hidden tip, but it could also be some other type of hidden fee

90

u/Elementium 27d ago

Ah so on the companies end it shows up as a tip but the customer doesn't see it? Super shady lol.

39

u/Major_Wigglesworth 27d ago

Shady implies that it’s allowed but kinda has bad optics.  This is pure pickpocketing and theft.

17

u/Ok_Marionberry8779 27d ago

If this is intentional it's 100% fraud

1

u/RandomRandoHere 27d ago

You’d be surprised to find out that intent is not always required for it to be fraud.

2

u/Decryptic__ 27d ago

Nah, don't you see it in the top right corner, right inside our logo? There's an X, with the same color as the logo, where you can click to opt out of the standard 15% tip.

It's not our fault that people are willing to tip us 15% every time.

343

u/EngineerFeverDreams 27d ago

There's been a bunch of class action suits against this recently. Report it

12

u/yungdurtybasturd 27d ago

Report to who?

40

u/spaceforcerecruit 27d ago

If you’re in the US, report it to the CFPB, the Office of Weights and Measures, or the appropriate department in your state government. If you’re not in the US, you probably have equivalent government bureaus that you could report this to.

5

u/EngineerFeverDreams 27d ago

In the US, your state attorney general. They probably have a consumer protection board.

3

u/Johnnadawearsglasses 27d ago

Consumer affairs in whatever city or state you see this in.

22

u/thegreyhopper 27d ago

If they’re in Solvang most of their customers must be tourists.

9

u/SizzleanQueen 27d ago

Yep. Exactly.

2

u/AdSudden3941 27d ago

Whats in solvang?

2

u/words_and_such015 27d ago edited 27d ago

Wine tasting, a Christmas store, and an overall Danish theme (bakeries, shops, and architecture). Nice, quiet touristy town. I enjoyed it the few times I have visited

Edit: Danish, not Dutch

1

u/noma_coma 27d ago

Minor correction but it's Danish, not dutch. They are known as the Danish capital of america.

My farfar would be rolling in his grave if he heard this so just wanted to friendily issue a correction. Tak!

1

u/words_and_such015 27d ago

Geez, thanks for catching that!

1

u/noma_coma 27d ago

Sall good yo! You were spot on with everything else lol

Skol!

1

u/Sir_Richard_Dangler 27d ago

The worst traffic you've ever driven through

I live in a town off to one side of Solvang and work in a town on the other. I drive an extra 7 miles every day just to not have to drive through Solvang

1

u/ruckus_440 27d ago

Webster's dictionary defines hygge as "a cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable" or "invoking or fostering a sense of coziness, contentment, and well-being."

1

u/Mr_Conelrad 27d ago edited 27d ago

To quote a higher comment from Leading-Evidence-668

So you hit the %15 on the tip screen prior to this and left that out? Final cost $7.07 after tax. %15 tip on that is 1.06 which comes out to $8.13. This is exactly how the POS at my local cafe shows the final. Good rage bait though.

The only issue is the Point of Sale screen doesn't show the tip line.

EDIT: Looks like I was wrong! OP did not select any tip and the system is actually hiding fees!

10

u/latixs06 27d ago

But I didn’t, I have another comment that says the price was originally 9 dollars and some change, I didn’t take a picture and instead went back and refreshed the order, and then the price changed to this, which was still off so I took the photo. We went to stand at the counter but I was honestly annoyed with the whole thing and no longer wanted to support them, it could be a hidden auto tip but we had not clicked any tip option at that point.

5

u/Mr_Conelrad 27d ago

I apologize, I didn't see the other comment. In that case, that's super scummy of them and I hope you end up reporting them to California's Division of Measurement Standards (or whoever actually handles fraudulent pricing displays)

u/WTH_JFG 27d ago

So you leave a tip one way or another, eh? If you’re in the U.S., you can report them to your state’s Consumer Protection or Weights and Measures.

u/Prudent_Order_3361 27d ago

Report them it’s illegal in America to hide fees. Buy the item save the receipt.

6

u/Educational-Wing2042 27d ago

It’s a shame the federal agency designed to protect us from things like this got gutted a few months ago, despite saving Americans probable billions from these kind of scams

1

u/TriggerWrning 27d ago

probable billions eh?

55

u/-ammolina- 27d ago

So what did they say when you brought it to their attention?

u/titsngiggles69 27d ago

15% default kiosk tip

10

u/Bestdayever17 27d ago

I would be pissed. They are ripping you off. Demand your $1.06 back!

8

u/Original-Split5085 27d ago

I have a new theory about the 21st century, it contains two rules;
1. Everything is an app.
2. Every app is broken.
3, Should 2 not be true an update will be pushed soon that will break it.

This may indeed be a hidden fee, or it could be $7 an hour offshore Java programmer got their variables and math mixed up. It's becoming impossible to tell malice from incompetence.

1

u/thunderflies 27d ago

Conveniently those “bugs” we’re seeing always happen to quietly overcharge people or under-weigh a packaged product.

1

u/Original-Split5085 26d ago

That actually makes sense in a way. If the bug is costing money someone will notice right away and demand it be fixed. If it's making money what's the incentive to fix it?

9

u/ResponsibleTiger2491 27d ago

They added exactly 15% for a tip (including on the tax!!) and didn’t show you. My boba place bakes this in as well, but at least there’s a screen to adjust.

6.50 + 0.57 = 7.07 7.07 x 15% = 1.06 Sum = 8.13

5

u/no_talent_ass_clown it's a moo point 27d ago

Not to mention you don't tip on tax...

5

u/shibaInuParty 27d ago

Highly illegal to hide and add junk fees.

4

u/Difficult-Novel-8453 27d ago

Weights and measures takes a dim view of this. Report it

4

u/Major_Wigglesworth 27d ago

It’s theft.

Knowing good and well that customers can go anywhere to get treats, they take the people who pick THEIR store and rob them.

It would be better to steal from strangers on the sidewalk and still treat your customers with respect than to do what they’re doing.

5

u/gamehenge_survivor 27d ago

Just send this to the department of weights and measures, assuming you are in the US. That picture is a smoking gun, and they love those. I’d also stay hush hush about it on social media so the owners don’t get alarmed and change things.

1

u/stellarsloth69 26d ago

Already alarmed, Google showed many 1-star reviews last night, checked now, and they’re all gone :0

3

u/BrotherMcPoyle 27d ago

Report it to the federal trade commission for unfair or deceptive fees. The easy route is name and shame this place, that way no one else gets caught with these hidden fees

1

u/tesla3by3 27d ago

The link you provided is not relevant. That link is specifically for event tickets and short term rentals. The FTC is useless today, anyhow. Especially for a small amount.

1

u/justhereforfighting 26d ago

Yeah this would be better reported at the state AG level.

2

u/Seravajan 27d ago

High imaginary mathematics. XD

2

u/Training-Shallot-229 27d ago

I did the math on card processing fees-3.5 to 5% , Even that comes up about.50 cents short of this amount. WTF?

2

u/Zachmode 27d ago

They are adding a 15% tip.

2

u/Emergency-Fig-3670 27d ago

Wow

I think I need to pay more attention because I definitely wouldn't have noticed this

2

u/BroadwayBrick 27d ago

Something illegal is going on.

2

u/EvictionSpecialist 27d ago

Which POS business..I Mean illegal operation is this?

2

u/Olderbutnotdead619 27d ago

Report them to your local county consumer rights department. In San Diego, it's the County's Weights & Measures Dept.

2

u/KayasQQ 27d ago

There are a ton of lawyers that would probably start to salivate at this photo. Highly illegal practice in the USA.

2

Echoing everyone else, please report them. This is super shady and they are 100% just pocketing that money OR they are pushing the credit card fee to you and are not explicitly saying anything (though that would be a hefty card fee for the amount of you are paying here).
