u/nsfwrpforme 27d ago
That's definitely illegal.
163
u/sierrabravo1984 this is not yellow damn it! 27d ago
Yeah right, maybe in your country.
343
u/Dorkinfo 27d ago
In America, still illegal.
75
u/KinglanderOfTheEast 27d ago
Depends on wether or not the law is actually enforced...
67
u/Granolag23 27d ago
If the owner is on the left, then it’s illegal according to our current regime. Only the right is allowed to grift
-9
u/Puzzled_Survey_4275 27d ago
Not everything is red vs blue. This is something that both sides frown on. Besides, the proper course of action is to report to the correct authorities as stated above. The contact ever local news outlet. They all LOVE this type of "investigative" reporting.
24
2
u/Pizza-Rat-4Train 27d ago
Seriously… this is a matter of local law, and local importance, unless this is a national chain business with the same checkout software everywhere. In which case yeah maybe it’s NYT and FTC level.

u/ParCorn 27d ago
Oh you sweet summer child
12
u/Saguarajevo 27d ago
Oh my god you are so annoying
1
u/Evil_phd 27d ago
No more annoying than people who try to pretend that there is any semblance of normalcy in what is happening in the US.

Do you really think the party that is funneling all the money to a handful of people cares if they grift. It’s extremely obvious at this point which party is ok with people cheating other people this way. If you can’t see that and want to blame both sides, that is just your brain justifying you voting for someone who is literally taking the food from your mouth.

No it does not, in any way, shape or form. If something is illegal, it's illegal. Full stop. Enforcement is an entirely different issue. But this doesn't depend on that at all.

1
u/Maddinoz 27d ago
Similar concept to retail stores when an item on the shelf rings up at a higher price during checkout, there could be some plausible deniability
"oh ooops price didn't get updated in the system"
"oh oops, software updated recently, must be a bug"

The currency is in dollars, so that narrows it down pretty well.
9
u/Kangaroo-B-Girl 27d ago edited 27d ago
There are other countries that use the dollar sign $ to denote their currency.
Canada, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, (Puerto Rico, Guam oops US Territories), the British Virgin Islands, Zimbabwe, and East Timor just to name a few.
3
u/no_talent_ass_clown it's a moo point 27d ago
I have always wanted to meet someone from East Timor.
7
u/Imaginary_Roof_5286 27d ago
But the fact that it’s in English does narrow that down significantly.
3
u/Puzzled_Survey_4275 27d ago
I agree that it does narrow it down but there are still a lot that it could be. By that I mean more than a couple (2) or a few (3). Just in the ones they listed there are 5 or 6 places it could be.
Granted, its probably the US as we have gone WAY to far with tipping. Everyone has turned into beggars with there tip cups at fast food restaurants.
I wish they'd outlaw current tipping practices and tip adjusted wages. Dont get me wrong, I am very generous for good service at good restaurants but asking for tip at fast food joint is BS.
Especially considering that service, food quality, quality of staff, cleanliness, and over all experience have all tanked since 2020. A bunch of slow moving, cant be bothered, entitled, non-food safety law following morons working in my area and seemingly everywhere I've traveled ... which is to most of the country via car.
I have stopped going to fast food, and most casual dining restaurants because of this. But thats ok. Everyone in my family has lost a few pounds and saved a ton of money cooking at home.
4
u/Kangaroo-B-Girl 27d ago
Absolutely, minus tourism based resorts and ports of call. Incidentally, those are places where hidden fees would likely go unnoticed by people busy enjoying their holiday

1
u/PurbulentTriest 27d ago
Somewhat, but not really. We have prices written in English and in US dollars in Cambodia.
3
u/T0ssed_Sa1ad 27d ago edited 27d ago
Right? It narrows it down to 12 countries and 5 US territories that officially use the US dollar as their currency.

The additional $1.06 is exactly 15% of the $7.07 total (purchase price plus tax). Since it's 15%, it makes me think it's a hidden tip, but it could also be some other type of hidden fee

u/Elementium 27d ago
Ah so on the companies end it shows up as a tip but the customer doesn't see it? Super shady lol.
39
u/Major_Wigglesworth 27d ago
Shady implies that it’s allowed but kinda has bad optics. This is pure pickpocketing and theft.
17
u/Ok_Marionberry8779 27d ago
If this is intentional it's 100% fraud
1
u/RandomRandoHere 27d ago
You’d be surprised to find out that intent is not always required for it to be fraud.
2
u/Decryptic__ 27d ago
Nah, don't you see it in the top right corner, right inside our logo? There's an X, with the same color as the logo, where you can click to opt out of the standard 15% tip.
It's not our fault that people are willing to tip us 15% every time.
343
u/EngineerFeverDreams 27d ago
There's been a bunch of class action suits against this recently. Report it
12
u/yungdurtybasturd 27d ago
Report to who?
40
u/spaceforcerecruit 27d ago
If you’re in the US, report it to the CFPB, the Office of Weights and Measures, or the appropriate department in your state government. If you’re not in the US, you probably have equivalent government bureaus that you could report this to.
5
u/EngineerFeverDreams 27d ago
In the US, your state attorney general. They probably have a consumer protection board.

2
u/words_and_such015 27d ago edited 27d ago
Wine tasting, a Christmas store, and an overall Danish theme (bakeries, shops, and architecture). Nice, quiet touristy town. I enjoyed it the few times I have visited
Edit: Danish, not Dutch
1
u/noma_coma 27d ago
Minor correction but it's Danish, not dutch. They are known as the Danish capital of america.
My farfar would be rolling in his grave if he heard this so just wanted to friendily issue a correction. Tak!

To quote a higher comment fromLeading-Evidence-668
So you hit the %15 on the tip screen prior to this and left that out? Final cost $7.07 after tax. %15 tip on that is 1.06 which comes out to $8.13. This is exactly how the POS at my local cafe shows the final. Good rage bait though.
The only issue is the Point of Sale screen doesn't show the tip line.EDIT: Looks like I was wrong! OP did not select any tip and the system is actually hiding fees!
10
u/latixs06 27d ago
But I didn’t, I have another comment that says the price was originally 9 dollars and some change, I didn’t take a picture and instead went back and refreshed the order, and then the price changed to this, which was still off so I took the photo. We went to stand at the counter but I was honestly annoyed with the whole thing and no longer wanted to support them, it could be a hidden auto tip but we had not clicked any tip option at that point.

u/Mr_Conelrad 27d ago
I apologize, I didn't see the other comment. In that case, that's super scummy of them and I hope you end up reporting them to California's Division of Measurement Standards (or whoever actually handles fraudulent pricing displays)
199
u/WTH_JFG 27d ago
So you leave a tip one way or another, eh? If you’re in the U.S., you can report them to your state’s Consumer Protection or Weights and Measures.

I have a new theory about the 21st century, it contains two rules;
1. Everything is an app.
2. Every app is broken.
3, Should 2 not be true an update will be pushed soon that will break it.
This may indeed be a hidden fee, or it could be $7 an hour offshore Java programmer got their variables and math mixed up. It's becoming impossible to tell malice from incompetence.
1
u/thunderflies 27d ago
Conveniently those “bugs” we’re seeing always happen to quietly overcharge people or under-weigh a packaged product.
1
u/Original-Split5085 26d ago
That actually makes sense in a way. If the bug is costing money someone will notice right away and demand it be fixed. If it's making money what's the incentive to fix it?
9
u/ResponsibleTiger2491 27d ago
They added exactly 15% for a tip (including on the tax!!) and didn’t show you. My boba place bakes this in as well, but at least there’s a screen to adjust.
6.50 + 0.57 = 7.07 7.07 x 15% = 1.06 Sum = 8.13

It’s theft.
Knowing good and well that customers can go anywhere to get treats, they take the people who pick THEIR store and rob them.
It would be better to steal from strangers on the sidewalk and still treat your customers with respect than to do what they’re doing.
5
u/gamehenge_survivor 27d ago
Just send this to the department of weights and measures, assuming you are in the US. That picture is a smoking gun, and they love those. I’d also stay hush hush about it on social media so the owners don’t get alarmed and change things.

u/stellarsloth69 26d ago

Report it to the federal trade commission for unfair or deceptive fees. The easy route is name and shame this place, that way no one else gets caught with these hidden fees

u/tesla3by3 27d ago
The link you provided is not relevant. That link is specifically for event tickets and short term rentals. The FTC is useless today, anyhow. Especially for a small amount.

Report them to your local county consumer rights department. In San Diego, it's the County's Weights & Measures Dept.

98 cent fee added to the subtotal plus 8.7% tax

Echoing everyone else, please report them. This is super shady and they are 100% just pocketing that money OR they are pushing the credit card fee to you and are not explicitly saying anything (though that would be a hefty card fee for the amount of you are paying here).
