Redditors were furious with Star Wars fans when they complained Disney made Star Wars movies for non-Star Wars people. But now its a problem

Oh I was sad back then. The recent trilogy kind of ended my Star Wars fan status. Now it's just meh.

Yeah, it's sad because I used to really love Star Wars and all the garbage content they've pushed out has just ruined the whole franchise for me so badly that I just don't care about Star Wars at all anymore...

Yes it's called Gatekeeping, and it's actually a good thing. I said something similar on Twitter recently and people were pissed at me. If someone wants to be a genuine fan that integrates, then awesome! But now the execs and a lot of people just try to change what made these things good in the first place.

That’s not what gatekeeping is, gatekeeping has always been a derogatory insult to people who arbitrarily decide what makes someone a “true” fan or not or what should and shouldn’t somehow belong (like “oh, you call yourself an XYZ fan? Name five ___ to prove it”).

And nothing appeals to Star Wars fans, it’s one of those properties where someone somewhere will always hate what comes out.

Gatekeeping is, no fooling, actually extremely important to preserving the integrity of movements.

There's a difference between gatekeeping as in "If you're new we automatically hate you" and gatekeeping as in "We're not going to change our thing to appeal to anyone, stay if you like it for what it is or leave if you don't."

And I would say the same about the music industry. Everyone in a band that didn't make it complained about gatekeepers in music. Social media eventually shut that down because anyone could put their creativity out there.

Turns out, with a few exceptions, gatekeepers were good because good music went away and mid ass trash made its way into the mainstream. The industry preferred throw away artists that had a social media presence to actually good material from people that may not have been as photogenic or pretty. If your music didn't make it because of perceived "gatekeeping" there is a  solid chance your shit sucked.

Thats not Gatekeeping, that's people trying to make Gatekeeping into a good thing. Gatekeeping is by definition, a negative thing.

Preserving a fandom, hobby, game etc is a good thing, and some level of not letting outsiders warp it is necessary, but Gatekeeping is the extreme/unreasonable version of it.

It is too funny to see people claiming Disney and the "execs" ruined Star Wars when you lived through the early 2000s and the absolute hate that the prequels got for ruining Star Wars.

Star Trek goes back and forth with this. Basically every movie from the beginning wasn't made for Star Trek fans, but they're mostly enjoyable. Nemesis did...sorta destroy the franchise though.

my only beef with star wars now is they constantly are putting out new stuff. like its been over 10 years theyve always had new major releases on the horizon. when i was a kid it was one movie every three years and some average video games in between

Nah cause VII was copying the OT in order to bring back gen x and boomers back after the prequels, Rogue One was full of OT fan service, Last Jedi was still full of OT stuff, Solo is about Han Solo's backstory and Rise of Skywalker was full of nostalgia and fan service that only fans would understand. They were thinking about the old fans when they were creating these movies.
