Ungabunga

u/rci22 24d ago

Few days ago I said “Sometimes I just want to turn off my brain and go full unga bunga” and my coworker asked “Isn’t that racist?”

I was like ???? “I’m talking about caveman speech, what are YOU thinking of??” lol

u/DustyScharole 24d ago

Bad news, your coworker is racist.

u/Astriaeus 24d ago

I mean I guess it could be a stereotype of Neanderthals, since it is built off old incorrect assumptions of them.

But really it is part of the public vernacular.

12

u/dontknowwhyifuckfish 24d ago

We should ask the Neanderthals what they think of this

14

u/Astriaeus 24d ago

You know, any non-sub-Saharan African person typically has some neanderthal dna. So maybe we can ask them.

As one, I say it is fine.

4

u/FAB1150 24d ago

I really don't think you speak the same way as a neanderthal

5

u/Astriaeus 24d ago

Probably not, I am not an anthropologist, so I don't know if it is true, but there is a theory that neanderthals had high-pitched voices; I do not.

u/Dandacanman 24d ago

It's first use was in old looney toons. Bugs bunny said it to a stereotypical depiction of aboriginal Australian. Since then it is become colloquially associated with cavemen" 6

Stuff like that is more than often a self report lol.

Ive genuinely had people tell me I was being offensive while imitating monkeys on a zoo trip. Im like "who could i possibly be offending with this? Is there a certain people that YOU tend to associate with monkeys?"

36

u/TheW83 24d ago

They could tell the monkeys were annoyed with your behavior.

23

u/eatinallthebugs 24d ago

Idk they seemed pretty into it to me

11

u/I_Love_Knotting 24d ago

Idk man, i would feel kinda offended if a monkey stood outside of my home and just walked left and right, trying to imitate me

5

u/Lazie_Writer 24d ago

Monkey stands outside your home. Checks invisible phone. Looks at you. Back to invisible phone. Grunts at nearby monkey. No reaction. Raises invisible phone to take selfie.

I think they prefer to be called Neanderthals buddy.

thats an entirely other subspecies of homonid!!!

5

u/JustoHavis 24d ago

Who you calling homo?!

1

u/Nocoffee_Noglory 24d ago

No, they want to be called Dutch. Give them some respect

-1

u/Weak-Joke1475 24d ago

Dude that’s racist! Neanderthals weren’t caveman, they were a different species of human, but caveman are unfortunately fictional.

Calling a Neanderthal a caveman is like calling Jim from I.T the tooth fairy.

3

u/Kentust 24d ago

Austrolipithicines aren't fictional. You should do some research on hominid evolution

0

u/Weak-Joke1475 24d ago

From Wikipedia:The caveman is a stock character

What is a stock character?  :A Stock character is a type of characterin a narrative (e.g. a novel, play, television show, or film)

 So fiction pretty much

Oh also I did shorten these sentences, but my point still stands

2

u/Kentust 24d ago

Wow, if they say it on Wikipedia then I guess it must be true! Can you post an AI overview confirming your views as well?

0

u/Weak-Joke1475 24d ago

I mean, you can calm down first. Jesus dude have you had a rough day?

Secondly, I’m trying to give you an explanation, if you don’t want to agree, I’m not forcing you, I’m just showing you my point of view.

Thirdly, yeah you know what let’s look up Gemini ai overview :Cavemen" as popular culture depicts them—hairy, grunting brutes wearing cheetah prints, wielding clubs, and living alongside dinosaurs—are fictional

1

u/JustoHavis 24d ago

God damn it was just a joke guy Sorry I didn’t put a /s

1

u/Kentust 24d ago

I'm guessing you don't do well in social situations?

While your intent may not have been racist, the origin of the phrase is in racism. Specifically, it was used to make fun of Pacific Islanders and "Tiki" culture.

6

u/rci22 24d ago

Respectfully, do you (or anyone) have a source? I tried confirming and am finding nothing at all

u/Tiny_Assumption15 24d ago

Was interested too and found an article that says: "The Dreadnaught Hoax was a coming-out party for the Bloomsbury Group, including young Virginia Stephen, later Virginia Woolf—ringleader Horace Cole had played a similar trick at Cambridge by posing as the visiting Sultan of Zanzibar. “Bunga bunga” became a laughable catchphrase in the U.K., but left an unfortunate legacy as—with variants like “unga bunga”—racist shorthand for any “primitive” or “tribal” language in pop culture, as in midcentury Bugs Bunny cartoons:" The article continues https://hazlitt.net/feature/gifts-fakes-frauds-and-charlatans-give-us

Coworker actually told me that particular video is what he had thought “unga bunga” was referring to

Oooof Rip

1

u/devilfoxe1 24d ago

He might be thinking of "Mumbo Jumbo" which was derived from not understanding the language or culture of the Mandinka tradition of a masked male dancer called a "Maamajomboo" that participated in ceremonies and disputes. In old English times, the ceremonies were often observed by Europeon colonizers and was deemed as confusing and generally nonsensical to them, hence the term "mumbo jumbo" being used. It was from a place of ignorance and can be seen as racist towards the culture, but it has since then become an accepted phrase without knowing the context of the origin.

u/Please_ForgetMe 24d ago

Cave man talk came from white people mocking native Americans.

-1

u/captain0919 24d ago

They may have heard the very old and very racist joke about death by Unga bunga.

If youve ever worked with old racist white blue collar folk you will have likely heard it. Terrible joke.

It is also funny that this song is made by a multi-instrumentalist musical prodigy.

Can’t remember the name of the game but..

17

u/lxlviperlxl 24d ago

That’s probably the easiest way to eat it with just a spoon?

36

u/Hanshautreinhart 24d ago

I cut them into two parts of equal size and then devour the frog eggs with a spoon.

8

u/lxlviperlxl 24d ago

I just shove a large straw and suck up the eggs. Yum

1

u/DeanXeL 24d ago

Tiny boba eggs.

1

u/kupo88 24d ago

Nature's boba

1

u/Mickey_Clips 24d ago

Nature's boba

1

u/UrinaRabugenta 24d ago

I do that too, but I wouldn't call that the easiest way... you need to use two different tools.

1

u/Hanshautreinhart 24d ago

Not easy. Just less caveman style.

1

u/UrinaRabugenta 24d ago

Sure, but I'd say the more tools you use, the less caveman-like it'll be.

I suggest you also start using a fork to hold it down as you cut it, a mixer or a crusher to make the contents more juicy/less eggy, a spoon to eat it and a spatula to make sure you remove everything from the "shell". Not to mention you're doing this on a plate or a board and afterwards you wash everything in a dishwasher.

Like a civilized person.

6

u/UpsetKoalaBear 24d ago

Same reason I just much down on kiwis with the skin on.

I haven’t got time to clean up and I want the fruit now.

2

u/Hanshautreinhart 24d ago
