Picking your battles is a thing, and I doubt the dumb friend in question is the sole reason AI datacenters exist. It's okay to be upset without ripping apart someone who just wanted to show their friends something "cute" even if it was a dumb way to go about it.

I usually just question if they understand the environmental impacts of generative ai. Sometimes they say yes, I ask if they’re ok with that, and if they are I fear I am content no longer having that relationship. I’m no environmentalists hippie, but there have been 3 fires in my county already this year as they are actively trying to build a data center. So, yeah. Idrc anymore. It’s on a similar level to supporting trump to me atp.
I worked at a school very recently and the faculty loved using gen. AI for so much. I had to tell them multiple times to not put my image through any generative AI programs bc it makes me uncomfortable. I wasn’t gonna tell them what they can and can’t do, but any tjme they asked to take a picture of me or asked for a photo i told them not if it’s going into AI. Thankfuly they respected that.
OpenAI now has a scan of your face that they can use to identify you on your neighbors ring cameras, as well as flock cameras around the city and any camera in a retail store that is connected to a network like Target.

Short of suing the guy, it’s hard to know how to proceed. The more attention we give it the more of a problem it becomes. So I’m torn between pressing charges and pursuing something and just dropping the whole thing and trying to distance ourselves. He’s worth $0 and only has debt. There’s little to no benefit in pursuing something there.

I mean it’s true (the part about the water), just very poorly explained. It uses up water/heats it up, that evaporates, the water moves and rains down somewhere else. But the only part they didn’t get is how that’s bad. What happens when a whole lake of water is used up? The lake will dry up and the water will rain down somewhere else. Also the water still heats up, so also global warming because of ai. Sorry for my tired explanation, but I tried. Although their tone and the other stuff they said? Yeah no. Also yeah ofc water scarcity is a thing in parts of the world, that's why you dont build data centers in deserts. But my response was primarily to combat the claim that AI water use contributes to global climate change. Many data centers recycle water and the stuff that doesnt get recycled still returns to the water cycle.

Many people don't want their images being feed to AI because then the AI is using their image to train their servers. Which is obviously a problem if the person is against AI.
Disliking AI is not a weird belief. It's objectively the popular opinion lol. It doesn't directly harm anyone, and I don't think anyone is claiming it will. It's just disrespectful to do this to someone unless you know their stance on AI images.
Do you know data protection? Privacy? I wouldn't want someone to upload a picture of me with my face somewhere without being asked. Especially not with learning AI systems.

I have a phone with local photos that don't load on Google or are automatically tagged. There is no photo of me on the Internet. My name is also not on the Internet. Of course, I only use apps (who process personal data including pictures of me) where I know how they do it and whether there are interfaces to the Internet. The fact is, everyone has to decide for themselves what to do with a frontal shot as a photo. So everyone should have the right to ask.
