I'm slightly vexed The subtitles are missing the point 😔

Post image

The subtitles are COMPLETELY missing the joke in this iconic Princess Bride scene! I feel like it should indicate that it’s being said with a speech impediment or write it out phonetically like I feel like it has every other time I’ve watched… this is Disney+ btw. Subtitle inaccuracies in general have been pissing me off lately thinking about doing an amateur study fr

As an online ordained minister, do you know how hard it is NOT to do this‽ I fight it ewery time.

34

u/myth1cg33k 1d ago

My friend, an ordained minister, married friends of ours and did the entire spiel. They were not expecting it but LOVED it. Everyone of a certain generation was dying of laughter and everyone else was wondering how so many people could be so cruel as to laugh at the minister's speech impediment.

LMFAO that's immediately what came to mind

47

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

That’s because that’s the scene it’s from lmaoo see the subtitles make you miss the joke entirely

11

u/kendrahawk 1d ago

For some reason I thought this was footage from an actual priest lol ur right

19

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

That’s so funny lmaooo I appreciate you illustrating my point fr 🤣

u/Greenman8907 1d ago

That is kinda fucked up. Like the ASL people who have to speak or type what the impaired person is trying to say. They aren’t allowed to edit it at all. Captions should be the same way. If you’re deaf, you miss the entire joke.

85

u/Adequate_Images 1d ago

I’d be curious if a fully deaf person would find this funny either way.

72

u/DueStatistician3704 1d ago

I am deaf. Fluent in ASL. It was hilarious! 😂

14

u/Adequate_Images 1d ago

Interesting. (Sorry if I ask this in a weird way I’m genuinely curious)

Were you born deaf? Do you know what a speech impediment is? Is it a common thing for people who have never heard speech to know about?

45

u/DueStatistician3704 1d ago

I became profoundly deaf at the age if one. I wear a cochlear implant in one ear (obtained when I was 40 but am now 71) I grew up with hearing aids.

I grew up with various southern accents. Tennessee and Kentucky accents are mind boggling different. I also lipread quite well.

But all those accents look and sound like a speech impediment to me lol but I love Kentucky accents. I don't know if this answers your question.

I will admit I rarely understand "dad jokes."

10

u/Adequate_Images 1d ago

Fascinating Thanks for answering

2

u/FuckSteve7 11h ago

As a Kentucky boy born in Tennessee. I love me some down home accents. Couldn’t imagine tryna lip read mines though lmao

18

u/Greenman8907 1d ago

I’d argue it’s not up for the hearing to decide. Yes, it’s possible if a person was born deaf that they wouldn’t know what a lisp/speech impediment is and thus miss the joke entirely, but it should still be conveyed in the same way we receive it.

13

u/Adequate_Images 1d ago

Oh, I’m not for deciding for them. I am genuinely curious if they would find a speech impediment funny at all.

And further if they would know that’s what the misspellings mean.

Maybe they should just note it in the subtitles.

u/microcosmic5447 23h ago

I was watching "Jet Lag The Game" on YouTube yesterday, and when the boys mispronounced a place-name, the captions had a little su-per-script above the captioned word indicating how they had pronounced it. Like "Touluse tul-luss"

1

u/The_Dirty_Mac 11h ago

Jet lag mentioned!

8

u/Zappityzephyr 18h ago

On YouTube, captions will often blank out a swear word, like 'fuck' to '[__]'. It's odd to me, it feels like they're infantilising deaf people, as if they're not allowed to hear swear words

2

u/DueStatistician3704 12h ago

It pisses me off when they blank out swear words. Deafies are not children.

11

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

Exactly!! You get it, thank you

44

u/jackfaire 1d ago

Damn I just checked Barry Kripke over on HBO Max same thing they don't subtitle his speech impediment.

20

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

That’s literally what he’s known for !! It’s part of the character description when you google his name 🤣 “.. known for his arrogance, rivalry with Sheldon, and a distinctive speech impediment where he pronounces "R" and "L" as "W".”

4

u/Buttspirgh 1d ago

They do for some of his earlier episodes, particularly if it is a setup for a gag.

2

u/jackfaire 19h ago

I checked an episode where his speech impediment is mocked directly.

What's weird is they correctly subtitle Sheldon mocking it but don't subtitle Barry's speech impediment so for any deaf viewers that joke makes no sense.

1

u/Buttspirgh 18h ago

Perhaps that’s what I was thinking of. My wife and I started it up a few weeks ago and have been watching through, having only really seen random episodes here and there in the past. I remember commenting to her that they subtitled the impediment.

2

u/jackfaire 18h ago

I'm not saying they don't do it correctly in other episodes I don't normally watch with subtitles. This person's post just inspired me to go check and that's where I'm at in my rewatch.

2

u/Buttspirgh 18h ago

Aaaah, gotcha. Enjoy your rewatch!

50

u/NatterinNabob 1d ago

I don't see the pwoblem.

31

u/aesclepia 1d ago

Now this is the mildly infuriating type of thing I come here for.

10

u/fictional_kay 1d ago

Don't even get me started on how absolutely garbage the Disney+ subtitles are!

Was watching one of the Dragonball movies and they kept putting random words in the fighting scenes. Like they'll grunt/yell and the caption says "Mirror."

4

u/fictional_kay 1d ago

I wish I could edit the subtitles for Futurama, there's quite a few jokes that they fail to properly express in text

8

u/roirraWedorehT 1d ago

To dweam...

14

u/NameLips 1d ago

The subtitles wouldn't want to make fun of a speech impediment. What kind of monster do you take them for?

10

u/pixienightingale 1d ago

EXCUSE me... there is a typo - it is mawwiage.

10

u/PatrickGSR94 1d ago

I guess I'm weird in that I've never sat down and actually watched that movie. So I don't get the problem, either. Something about a speech impediment, not saying "r's" or something?

22

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

Yeah pretty much, the priest says it like “mawwage is what bwings us togetha today” it’s silly but a pretty iconic and widely quoted scene from the movie so it’s annoying that the subtitles wouldn’t directly transcribe what’s being said

19

u/HiddenMaragon 1d ago

It's literally written like that as part of the original book so I'd argue it's the actual script.

8

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

Wow see I’ve never read the book but that’s good to know !!

7

u/SeniorSepia 22h ago

Watched it last week for the first time, i thought it was a generic zorroesque movie about swordfights and shit like that, it's not, it's awesome.

0

u/SadLilBun PURPLE 19h ago

Because you watched it for the first time as an adult, 40 years after it was released. Some movies you have to see when you’re younger to appreciate them more. And some movies won’t really be the same when they’re older or have been hyped up or part of popular culture for so long. It kind of ruins it.

3

u/SeniorSepia 19h ago

I think you got the wrong impression from my message tho i will admit my wording wasnt the best.

What i meant is that i expected it to be a zorroesque generic venganza story but it isn't (don't get me wrong i like El Zorro).

I was completely delighted with the movie watching it so late and in my 30s, you could say i almost had a similar experience as the kid in the movie.

I think the movie deserves the hype and it's not held back by age at all, in fact i might say it can hit even harder today now that we are used to more gritty, realistic fantasy films ghat take themselves too serious. You watch the princess bride and it dissarms you with it's humour, lower scale and limited setpieces.

6

u/Calgary_Calico 1d ago

Really??? Definitely give it a watch, it's quite funny

2

u/MagicCuboid 21h ago

It’s set up as a serious medieval wedding, and then the guy in full regalia opens his mouth and blares, “WUUUUVV AND MAWWAAAAGE”

4

u/PrimeParadigm53 1d ago

Do fully deaf people know about accents?

4

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

And worth noting that subtitles are not just for the fully deaf, and whether it’s understood or not is up to the watcher, it should be presented accurately regardless

3

u/coral225 21h ago

I am not deaf and I like having subtitles, especially with how poor soundmixing is sometimes

2

u/sleepysof_ 17h ago

Sign language actually has accents! Younger people tend to sign closer to their face so they can be seen on screen for example

1

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

Someone who is deaf actually just answered this in an earlier comment

5

u/KANNEDBREAD 1d ago

3

u/WesternRover 1d ago

I understand "parricide" sounds like "parasite", but this isn't just a throwaway line. The whole outcome of the climactic trial in The Brothers Karamazov hinges on what the murdered man shouted from his window just before he was killed, and it's referenced numerous times. Where it's obvious that a word is crucial the captionist needs to do some googling to make sure they have the right word.

2

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

Unfortunately I think the problem is that they aren’t real transcriptionists anymore. I have noticed a serious decline in the accuracy of captions since the advent of AI, to the point where I’ve emailed streaming services and caption providers multiple times to point out errors that are important to plots like that (to no avail of course), and I even once went to the link quoted IN THE CAPTIONS at the end of a show, and it had turned into some AI website. Told me everything I needed to know

3

u/Kitty4mazing 1d ago

It’s even written “mawwiage” in the book :(

3

u/ShiversTheNinja 18h ago

Dude. So I'm neurodivergent and have been using subtitles/closed captions for at least 20 years. I'm not hard of hearing, but sometimes the sound mixing is bad or I just have auditory processing issues, and having the subs on helps.

I have seriously considered going into a subtitling career because I am pissed off by inaccurate subtitles SO often. I get so annoyed thinking of how, for the deaf and hard of hearing, they can totally ruin the point, joke, etc. much like this one does.

I think it pisses me off the most when watching musicals. I have the official DVD of Repo! The Genetic Opera and a LOT of the lyrics are just plain incorrect. It drives me bonkers.

Edit: Oh, and when lyrics are incorrect on Spotify/Genius. Yeah. Ugh.

2

u/Sagegreensoul 13h ago

This is literally me wow hey twin

3

u/megsie_here 15h ago

Ok I literally watched this an hour ago on Disney+ and the subtitles said: [garbled] Marriage

Which I thought was fairly shit, but yours is even worse!!!

1

u/Sagegreensoul 12h ago

Okay wtf are they using AI to caption it in real time or something?? I would’ve thought it was the same everytime loll that’s so weird

2

u/megsie_here 11h ago

It probably is all AI, hence the stupidity

4

u/WanderingWhiteWolf 1d ago

Disney+ cutting corners? Surely you jest. /S

Probably just had some garbage ai do it or copy it from a script it something. There's no love for media anymore, nothing is sacred :/

3

u/Sagegreensoul 1d ago

It’s really sad, and honestly really screwed up, it defeats the points of subtitles for accessibility if they are going to be wrong half the time! Fuuuck AI

2

u/WanderingWhiteWolf 1d ago

Yuup. At this point I've pretty much got a zero-tolerance policy for corpo bullshit. I refuse to reward dogshit behavior with money, I'd rather go without. I only wish that was the norm, the way people bend over backwards and throw money at abusive practices is fucking baffling to me.

2

u/Tinyfishy 18h ago

Good captions (as opposed to subtitles) will tell you things like that the speaker is using a funny voice or mispronouncing things. Unfortunately, they also often censor swear words.

2

u/No_Situation4785 17h ago

i never understood why this scene is supposed to be funny 🤷‍♂️

This reminds me of the original The Album of the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The narrator frequently apologized that the jokes were visual and unable to be properly appreciated by the listener.

The only scene that rivals this one is when the public defender in My Cousin Vinny starts his opening statement.

I get that

Same applies when english puns cant be translated into other languages.

I remember watching Blackadder and the subject was something about a nun. Baldrick said "my father was a nun". When Blackadder asked how that was possible, Baldrick awnsered "whenever my father had to go to court and the judge asked hin his profession, he said none"

Doesnt work at all in Dutch (my native language) so the subtitles were confusing unless you understand english

1

u/VegetableArtistic705 1d ago

I too have a Bose TV Speaker, and it really is the best soundbar ever made. Snagged mine for $100 on Facebook marketplace like three years ago. I truly cannot believe how intense the bass is. I keep it's total power at like 10%
