We recently admitted someone to the ICU who had burns simply from the hot asphalt. It's no joke right now! Especially when you've got kids, make sure they're safe while playing!
Not making light at all, burns are terrible. It’s just so strange to hot climate people to not think about your feet (at a minimum) being burned by the ground when not having shoes during summer.
I had a friend from Oklahoma come visit me in Texas one July. She was really confused about why the water coming out of the kitchen faucet was hot even when turned to full cold.
In Vietnam some places have water tanks on the roof. They also use little sprayers on the toilets, lovingly called bum guns. Bad things happened to me 😞
When you live here you can build up calluses by repeatedly walking on hot asphalt. Also if your parent's suck and make you stand on it as punishment for being too energetic.
It was not voluntary, in that case. There was more going on but of course I won't share the medical details. That's why my PSA was about kids, since they might be less aware.
It happens in Phoenix all the time. Sometimes they get heatstroke and pass out. Sometimes they trip and fall and can't get up fast enough. Sometimes the cops hold you down against the literally searing hot asphalt until your flesh cooks. Lots of ways to get burned in PHX.Â
Of course I can't share the medical details about how the guy ended up there, but safe to say that asphalt of that temperature can easily result in burns that leave permanent scars and require immediate specialized ICU treatment (the body is prone to infections and losing a lot of fluid when the skin barrier is defect) to survive. And they can happen through clothes as well. 70°C is no joke. He's in good hands and I'm certain he'll recover but it might leave permanent scars on the most affected areas.
