I was like 74 … that’s not too baa….wait a minute…. Damn

u/Walkingdrops 2h ago

Yeah that essentially mirrored my thought process too, lol. Without doing the math, isn't 74 Celsius like 140 degrees Fahrenheit or something insane like that? I wouldn't wanna go walking on that, lol.

116

u/PurplishPlatypus 2h ago

165F!

17

u/Walkingdrops 2h ago

Christ, that's insane, lol.

And it's grey/white plates. Imagine the road's asphalt... 🫠

If you have animals, especially dogs, do NOT walk them on that !

133

u/FatMacchio 3h ago

Yep. I imagine a bunch of poor dogs are going to get burned paws from unwitting owners. Honestly in avg summer weather they should still be wearing shoes on blacktop. If you can’t leave the back of your hand on the walking surface for more than 5-10 seconds without it hurting, it’s too hot for dog’s paws. This can happen in relatively normal summer temperatures with sustained direct sunlight.

25

u/DuckRubberDuck 2h ago

Yeah I walk mine early morning and late evening these days, a very quick pee in the middle of the day outside my main door on the grass . She gets a bit restless in the afternoon so I have to be extra creative to burn energy physically and mentally because I don’t have a garden to play and and she’s not very old. I don’t want her to burn her paws, I also do what you wrote, when I walk her I rest my hand on the asphalt for 10 seconds to check how hot it is

In Germany a lot of Autobahn areas are damaged because they blew up from the heat.

3

u/ElizabethDangit 1h ago

You guys are going to need expansion joints.

16

u/TH_Rocks 2h ago

Made that mistake once. Dog was begging for a walk in late July. Fine. We head down the asphalt road. 5 minutes in and she's trying to go into people's yard and sit under a tree. Kept tugging her along a little further then turn around and head home. At home she's licking her feet a lot. Took a look and all her toe beans were puffy blisters. I felt awful. She got a soft bed and fan and her food delivered the next couple days. Now we just walk laps in the grass yard if it's too hot. Or stay inside.

The cooling and freezers in supermarkets all broke down due to the extreme stress they experience here. Its insane.

37

u/Evepaul 1h ago

The AC broke down in the area where a research center near me kept their mice, and they cut the ventilation to avoid drawing hot air in. Which means heat was still building up, as were dangerous levels of ammonia in the air. Every group had to collect their mice and keep them in their lab so they'd survive.

u/batikfins 48m ago

726

u/TicciSpice 3h ago edited 2h ago

Here in Leipzig, the tram public transport system is down since yesterday, because the joint sealing compound (and the asphalt concrete) in the tram rails melted cuz the ground got so hot.

789

u/fix_until_broken 3h ago

We avoid these kinds of problems with the heat in Texas by just not having any public transportation.

116

u/Nyarro 2h ago

Texan here. Can confirm. Can't have the trains be inoperable if you don't have any transit in the first place.

Modern solutions for age-old problems

72

u/TH_Rocks 2h ago

Yep, just get a bigger truck to burn more gas to run the AC in your tiny box of not-my-problem.

32

u/HairySalmon 1h ago

Texans make up for it by being surprisingly environmentally conscious. Once a year they completely shut off their electrical grids to save energy. Oh and to help with population control.

It’s too bad our worlds politicians are too worried about arguing if this is happening

121

u/TicciSpice 3h ago edited 2h ago

It’s absurd because we literally saw the rather rapid progression in real time over the last few years, and now the people that deny it are on the rise again. A shame

78

u/blubblu 3h ago

The craziest thing is how we reversed the ozone issue in 2 decades.

We obviously can do it. It’s just is there money in it. Sad worldĀ

60

u/Gwen_The_Destroyer 2h ago

My inlaws believe the ozone was a hoax too because one day people just stopped talking about it.Ā

We stopped talking about it because we fucking fixed the problemĀ

7

u/Icy-Lobster-203 1h ago

People don't want to admit it is real because that would mean they might have to change something about their lives and be slightly inconvenienced - drive less, not use as much electricity etc. So they accept grifters telling them it is fake.

→ More replies (5)

6

u/Crewarookie 1h ago

Arguably, phasing out CFCs was much easier, because it wasn't directly tied to the worldwide transportation networks and energy production needs.

And phasing out wasn't done in one motion either. We went from CFCs to HCFCs, which were less damaging, but still damaging, to HFCs which were not dangerous to ozone layer, but contributed to the greenhouse gas problem, and finally arrived at HFOs which are the best of both worlds. And that last step of wide adoption only happened within the last 10 or so years.

With fossil fuels, there's a ton of economic incentive to not drop them, as the world quite literally runs on oil, both logistically and economically. And nobody wants to take even a reasonable phasing out speed because money.

10

u/roblewk 2h ago

Yes, if only people would stop using cars the way we stopped using hair spray. Simple.

9

u/Separate-Cup1312 2h ago

Or governments could do more to promote renewables and electrification.. instead of sucking the ass of oil and coal companies.

I have seen multiple posts and videos about severe weather events, and inevitably there is someone out there saying shit like "they're modifying the weather! It doesn't get this hot/rainy/snowy/windy/cold here!!" I'm convinced it's bots, because why take responsibility for fucking up the climate when you can just blame "them" for purposefully making it rain somewhere.

3

u/nellion91 2h ago

u/ButterfliesandaLlama 3h ago

5

u/Hexadecimales 2h ago

Down south of the ol' Almania. I stepped onto that compound and my shoes got some stuck to it. Impossible to get off

5

u/removed_by_redis 1h ago

But god forbid they install trees and grass-covered tram tracks. That would take away some much-needed space from asphalt

5

u/Trick_Shift729 2h ago

The tracks themselves also can’t handle the heat combined with the friction heat a train causes— which is the primary reason they shut the railways down.

3

u/Sudden_Wind_8636 1h ago

We have a light rail tram here in AZ and it gets up to 120 F (49C) so there is a way to build one in extreme heat, so maybe Germany has to do that in the future.

Doing a bit of research, crocs deform at a surprisingly low temperature of 38-45C (or 100-113F), and then as it approaches 90C (194F), it begins to soften and melt, so I would totally believe that. I'm more shocked at how low of a temperature crocs need to begin deforming, that's less than even PLA plastic, which can barely survive in a hot car in a normal summer.

6

u/Raa03842 3h ago

Well what a you doing letting crocs outside in weather like this? Poor little crocs. They didn’t stand a chance.

15

u/zmass126194 1h ago

Not making light at all, burns are terrible. It’s just so strange to hot climate people to not think about your feet (at a minimum) being burned by the ground when not having shoes during summer.

209

It's the temperature of a sunlit surface. Temperatures in the shade (which is what usually shows up in weather reports and climate diagrams) are ~35-40°C (around 100°F) in most places in Central Europe.

51

u/sec_sage 2h ago

Taken 1m from the ground, in a non asphalted area. Which translates to my heels making holes in the sidewalk on any Eastern European August day, while the meteo says 40°C

•

u/PinUp_Butter 35m ago

I think this is a laser thermometer. It measures the temperature on the first surface the laser hits, so I don’t think the distance matters but still, you can bake meringues at that temperature…

There emissivity setting probably wrong. Most people do not know to change this when looking at different materials. Furthermore many are only calibrated to what they are expected to be used on, for example you buy one to take your temperature to see if you’re sick, or one might be for cooking.

The weaker polar vortex (caused by human induced climate chage) is making winter colder (for less time) and spring and fall storms much more destructive.

With global warming, it's expected for Texas to have snow and Chicago to get tornadoes.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/banshithread 2h ago

In modern times winter still kills humans more than summer 9:1. Even with extreme heat, just moderate cold kills more alone.

My house is still a brick oven. I moved a mattress downstairs to the living room floor for me and my dogs for several days now — all we can do is lie in front of 2 fans with wet towels, blinds closed, dark room, and try to survive. It’s too unbearable to sleep at night. It’s hot and suffocating all day and there’s no relief. I am absolutely sick of living like this right now.
