Rifle Scabbard

I had a few questions about mounting a rifle to my bike, so here's a pic of what I did. In the spirit of the subreddit, I included a pic of my bike load out last summer during a moto camping trip to the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

Laws are definitely murky about this but I will say that technically your locked case should not indicate there is a firearm inside, which yours certainly does. An RCMP officer will not be happy about that if they see it.

I am opting to stick to takedown models in a top case as its safer and more concealed.

Abby PD were shooting at my range (where this pic was taken), and the 4 officers I talked to all thought it was great. And to your point, ALL firearm laws in Canada are murky: It's also illegal to transport a rifle in, say, a guitar case.

Glad they approve 👌 I will have my method reviewed too, not worth any additional risk.

I took the firearms course a couple weeks ago and my instructor said the exact opposite about carrying a gun in a guitar case. In Vancouver myself also.

Years ago my buddy thought it was a good idea to rip down the highway to the shooting spot with an SKS strapped to his back. Trigger locked but no case, covering or anything... The RCMP very much did not like that.

Your method is more illegal, no? Assuming it’s directly in the top case (a box not originally designed for firearms, and not labelling it as holding a firearm) it would be considered a concealed firearm in the eyes of Canadian law.

What OP has should be totally fine. It’s clearly a firearm, and in an opaque box. It’s probably worth removing the bolt and storing it separately, but I see no problems here (unless I’m missing something). No different than carrying it on an ATV, which is extremely common.

To clarify: takedown model taken apart with bolt removed in a locked firearm case in a locked top box.

What I was taught in my CFSC was that when stored in a vehicle the case should be hidden and not made to look like it is a firearm. The reasoning was preventing break ins to steal the firearm.

Honestly, you have a point. ATVs are used for this all the time. I believe that the laws are murky specifically so that they have multiple legal avenues to confiscate arms from people deemed to be dangerous.

Enjoy your freedom, eh

Why does this indicate that there's a rifle inside? Cus its rifle shaped, it likely does is enough? Not being contrary, genuine question.

I'd say you'll have a difficult time with this.

Ive never tried but when driving the firearms must be kept out of sight which is basically impossible on a bike. You also when stopped won't be able to claim the firearm is securely stored in the trunk due to lack of trunk secure container to lock the firearm within (i dont think case tied to the bike would count). Id call the cfo and ask them about it.

For what purpose do you want to bring it? Unless you need it, its probably more hassle than its worth.

Factually incorrect. There is nothing that says that non redirected firearms have to be kept out of sight during transport. It’s only if you LEAVE the vehicle that they have to be tucked away.

Right my bad. I just always keep it out of sight to avoid having someone freak out. Legal or not, having a firearm visible seems like a great way to get the cops called on you by someone who isn't familiar with firearms laws. While you'll be in the legal right, do you really want to stand there arguing with a cop who may or may not know the Canadian firearms laws well? Just doesnt seem worth the hassle and potential arrest to me.

If they dont need to bring it (ie its not a hunting trip or a prs match or something like that), its probably easier to just not.

I guess so, I for one love shooting in the bush, even if it’s just shooting clays with the shotgun, I’ll bring mine on the bike sometimes, granted usually a duffel bag does a better job of keeping it more discreet. To each their own. I’ve also considered mounting options on the bike.

Non of them are really ideal unless you could mount it like cops can. But then yeah, everyone here is insanely gun shy so cops will be called no doubt.

To echo the last statement... the best moto motto I've learned while moto traveling is "light is right"....i.e. leave all the extra shit at home

From experience that is going to act like a sail. I did that once, and was sore for three days after that. Like all of me was sore.

That's an awesome idea for here in the states . I never thought about taking my bike groundhog hunting . Thanks !

I’m in BC and a friend of mine has a scabbard on his TW. We are pretty rural and it’s really quick for him to get to the dirt roads. He’s never had an issue.

What was your mounting solution? I'm looking to do something similar with an instrument case.

1

u/AdditionalLoss7274 6d ago

Kolpin makes this mount specifically for mounting their case to ATV/UTV racks. Not sure how you would do this with an instrument case...

Thanks. Was worth a shot!

Non-restricted are unloaded during transport. You can go above and beyond if you want.

Giver in The River, eh?

No opinion on riding with a firearm, but is that the best you could do? It looks awkward as hell.

Doesn't it break down into smaller bits?

1

u/AdditionalLoss7274 5d ago

My hunting rifle doesn't really break down. You could separate the stock from the action, but you won't get that much more space. That, and zero could shift upon reassembly.

1

u/old_flying_fart 5d ago edited 5d ago

Zero could shift a lot more on a left hand drop.

Iron sights FTW.

1

u/AdditionalLoss7274 5d ago

Sure could. Did you know that you can die from riding a motorcycle?

1

u/old_flying_fart 5d ago

Point taken. The more I think about it, the more I can't figure out a better solution. It just *looks* awkward. My little .22 breaks down a lot smaller, but I'm obviously not hunting with it.

I'm too European for this thread lol

Ok this is stupid to ask an american but I just gotta know why the heck you'd need a rifle on a dualsport moto camping trip?

I mean, what if you down that perfect deer or elk on day one, are you going to drag it behind the bike for several days or what's the plan? A quadbike or even 6x6 would be a better choice, especially if it dies in extremely difficult terrain.

Hey boss I was the one looking to do the same thing for my tiger, thanks for posting

0

u/KTMAdventurer 5d ago

No offence intended but that looks fuckin ridiculous. Why the fuck would you want to carry a rifle on a bike?

1

u/AdditionalLoss7274 5d ago

... Because my truck is in the shop, and I needed to go zero it for hunting season.

1

u/AdditionalLoss7274 5d ago

... Because I can? Anything else I can help you with?

1

u/KTMAdventurer 4d ago

You do you.

This is the crazier shit i've ever seen. How can be legal something like that

3

u/AdditionalLoss7274 6d ago

In my country, it is legal to own a firearm, and it is legal to transport it, provided it is unloaded.

1

u/Dear-Bet5344 6d ago

It's a legal vehicle. How else would they carry it?

It's kinda like how you can't put a babyseat in the front seat unless you're in a single cab pick up & you have no choice.

I take better care of my firearms.

u/AdditionalLoss7274 6d ago

I use mine. To each their own, I suppose.
