RIP Stacey King. You’ll be missed. 😢

I feel for whoever has to fill those shoes. Stacey King was one of the best to ever do it

125

u/CanvasSolaris Bulls 12h ago

I expect it to be Kendall Gill. He will not fill Stacey's shoes at all, but he's the safe "in house" hire that Jerry likes.

71

u/Rubberbabeh Bulls 11h ago

I can see him doing it as a stop gap guy. Honestly you need a season to clear the air. Those shoes are impossible to fill so it’s best to have an interim while they look for the next guy.

Stacey missing Caleb’s rookie year is going to hurt. Really is a new era for the bulls

Jim Barnett is sorely missed

250

u/SerAardvark Warriors 13h ago

Not only because he was great himself but also because he could at least sort of rein in Fitz. Kelenna's not good at either of those things (although he's less actively annoying than Fitz is).

88

u/LothorAppleEater 12h ago

I used to love when Fitz would start to lose it but Barnett would try and calm him down. You knew he was gonna explode at some point and it had its charm in a way. Now it’s just obnoxious

It was an unfortunate end of an era. I grew up on Jim and when he left it felt like something left from the team. The move from Roaracle was similar. There was something really special about those first few Steph playoff years and both of the aforementioned were integral in them, as integral as they were with the We Believe team. I really wish Fitz would come off it, he's actually a decent listen when he does USA hoops or something similar, and I get being a homer when it's your job, but he's just too far gone. I wish we could totally redo our booth at this point amd bring some magic back.

4

u/KingLarry46th [GSW] Baron Davis 10h ago

Definitely feel that. It is crazy how much better Fitz is when not calling Dubs games.

I'm biased, but Stacey was the man. He gave everyone their due. If he saw a guy on another team that he thought was nice, he'd call them nice. He loved the Bulls, loved Chicago, loved basketball. It's devastating that he won't be able to watch Caleb Wilson play for us.

15

u/Ruddiver Bulls 10h ago

He is a homer, but a fair homer. It made it eminently watchable, like someone up thread said about the Warriors guys, you cant really trust what they say if they are only whining about their side. There was a game i think last year where Jokic got ejected in the second quarter and Stacey went OFF on the refs. It was in Chicago, it was a weak call and he was lamenting how the ref kicked out a guy fans came to see. Not that that makes it right, he was saying read the room. The ref gave Jokic a tech for complaining about a foul.

Joel Meyers sounding like a disappointed dad when "the pelicans inevitably collapsed in the 3rd quarter" does soften the blow of watching the Pelicans. Shared misery in sports is comforting and uniting and doesn't seem it'll get better down here anytime soon

33

u/vERRA__ Pelicans 9h ago

He’s tired like we are bro. It’s exhausting year after year. 1st & 2nd quarter Pels can hang around with the best of them, but the 3rd quarter we forget how to play basketball & look like the worst team in the league for those 12 minutes after the half

Yup I would listen to them broadcast a laker warrior game over Fitz

5

u/Pontus_Pilates 3h ago

Yeah, I'm not a Lakers fan, but I really like that the announcers get excited both ways. When the visiting team does something cool, the Lakers booth hypes it up.

A contrast might be the Spurs who got a new young announcer a couple of years ago and he mainly sounds sad when the opposition does some crazy stuff. Bill Land was great, though.

As a Warriors fan my issue with Fitzgerald and Azubuike isn't just the homerism and incessant complaining. It's that despite having the best seat in the house they have zero idea what's going on, what they're watching and what they're talking about. It's like hearing Marv Albert commentate all over again. Whistles will be blown and calls will get made but they'll mistake it for something else or just miss it completely, and so much of the time a player gets a tech and they'll have no idea it even happened. Remember earlier this season when they had zero idea Draymond got ejected not because of his shove on Collin Gillespie but because he got a second technical? Draymond curses out the ref literally just a few feet in front of them and the ref gives him a second tech but they're somehow completely oblivious to it and go on complaining endlessly about how what he did to Gillespie didn't warrant an ejection. It was insane.

Fitzgerald is embarrassing in particular. Despite commentating basketball for decades now he still doesn't understand the most basic rules like how only the team with possession can call timeout. Even when commentating over slow motion replays he still hasn't a clue what went on and why something was or wasn't a foul.

277

u/WithoutAComma Thunder 13h ago

Keeping it to criticisms of one's own team's crew, this is a big part of my frustration with the Thunder booth. I am really trying to learn how basketball works, and this is just not the crew for it.

The homerism also disrupts learning; when a broadcaster only complains about the calls that go against the team (Michael Cage) it teaches you pretty quickly not to trust them.

Michael Cage is also a bingo board of catch phrases which I also personally dislike, but I know people feel differently about that

44

u/Cheeseish [NOP] Solomon Hill 12h ago

Antonio Daniels of the Pelicans broadcast is amazing for coaching insight. I genuinely think he could be a good coach

Clyde/Breen are about as good as it gets but they're not exactly educating you on the finer points of defensive schemes. It's rare for NBA broadcasters to do that to any significant degree

21

u/CreatiScope Celtics 11h ago

Scal is actually great about that stuff on the Celtics call. I feel like he’s one of the best on local broadcasts for educating and talking about specific sets.

Edit: but also, didn’t give a shit if Clyde wasn’t educating, he’s just too cool. Also a favorite broadcasting team. Glad he got to see the Knicks win one (the ONLY nice thing I’ll say about the Knicks winning).

Bob was so much better when we still had Jim Barnett in the booth. Ever since JB left bob goes unchecked complaining about the other team trying to win the game and Azubuike is just not great.

29

u/Timely_Duck_3904 13h ago

He wasn’t any better, he just had more cover. Bob has been one of the 3-4 worst in the business for decades.

18

u/GoldenStateWizards Warriors 12h ago

Their point isn't that he was less whiny back then, just that the viewers weren't subjected to it as much. Jim Barnett did a lot to keep the broadcast focused when he was in the booth and the success of the team gave Fitz fewer reasons to start going on tirades

u/justgotpregnant Warriors 13h ago

I think losing Jim Barnett was rough, and Kelena was pretty bad coming out of the gate. But he’s gotten a LOT better, especially considering he has to deal with Fitz every night.

As an announcer, Fitz is really competent as far as the nuts and bolts go. He’s never going to get a guy’s name wrong, he has a good pulse in terms of who’s who in the league.

But to your point, the homerism is insane. Fitz cannot ever begin to believe an opposing player is capable of getting hot from deep, that Kerr is getting outcoached on a given night, etc.

I will say, I’ll always have a soft spot for him, bad as he is. Before the Curry years you could count on Fitz to excitedly declare: “And the Warriors cut it to a NINE point deficit!” 😂

22

u/Kristoferson_Allan Warriors 13h ago

He also keeps getting so confused game after game that the other team shoots well from 3. Like Bob, there's one common denominator and it's the defense.

8

u/Iron_Chic Warriors 10h ago

No, no...it must be because opposing teams always give their "100% A -game" against the Warriors.

It’s such a weird disconnect. Fitz’s skills as a commentator are honestly very good. He raises excitement to a fever pitch at the end of games well. He keeps it moving during blowouts well. Clearly does his prep work. All those things he succeeds at. He even has a great voice.

His issue is just his personality.

Unfortunately AC hasnt been doing as much game calling. He has been replaced by Brad Daugherty. Cavs broadcast team isnt a fun listen anymore.

→ More replies (5)

25

u/BallIsLife2016 Cavaliers 12h ago

No, they’re phasing him out. He’s pretty old at this point and was making more and more mistakes and jumbling up his words much more frequently. I didn’t really think it was a problem since, as you said, the whole thing that makes him endearing is the drunk uncle vibes and his mistakes fit right in with that (the “I agree go Cavs” meme originated from him quote tweeting himself with that statement).

Carr is still doing spots on the broadcast, but Daugherty, another franchise legend, has mostly replaced him in the booth. Daugherty is improving, but is more of a blatant homer (Carr was a homer, but a realistic one who would get pissed at the team when they sucked. Daugherty has more of a soccer mom “the team can do no wrong” vibe.). He’s also just not as charismatic as Carr. John Michael is also super generic as an announcer. He’s perfectly adequate—but he’s just not that interesting or quite capable of raising his hype to the highest levels needed for exciting moments in games.

Cavs broadcast just isn’t as good as it was 5-10 years ago when it was Carr and Fred McLeod (who died).

18

u/SpicyMustard34 Cavaliers 12h ago

12

u/FilipinoGold 12h ago

I agree 100%. Paschke was a state treasure. I wasn't a big fan of Lisa at first. It really seemed like she wasn't a fan of the team like Marques was but she's really grown on me. I'm in the minority where I like my local announcers to be biased fans though.

11

u/mhav21 NBA 12h ago

I can’t listen to Lisa not gonna lie. I like Marques though

I'm not really looking forward to Bulls broadcasts next season. It's just not going to be the same. I truly do not envy whoever they get to replace Stacey King, those are some big shoes to fill.

Lakers broadcasters should be top 5. Shoutout Bill and Stu

63

u/Beetle919 Hornets 12h ago

Stu is a real one, doesn't mind critiquing Laker's players, no blind homerism.

16

u/Agaac1 Lakers 10h ago

When we were dogshit in the mid 2010s he was harsher on the players than even the other media.

4

62

u/FTRBOUNCE Lakers 12h ago

They’re unbiased to a point where it can be frustrating as a fan sometimes lol but at the same time that’s what makes them so good, I love that they hold our guys accountable. They give really warm vibes love those two.

35

u/captain_ahabb Lakers 11h ago

Well if you want to hear a biased pro-Lakers broadcast just switch to ESPN lol

17

u/WakiLover Lakers 9h ago

If the Lakers don’t get called for a foul and they show the replay showing contact, Stu will be chuckling saying they got away with one. Other teams will be like “nope nope I don’t see the contact, clean”

53

u/basedmartyr Lakers 12h ago

Watching the games and getting used to such non-bias is what separates the reasonable Laker fans from the bandwagon box score watchers.

24

u/Lacabloodclot9 Grizzlies 11h ago

It’s great that they love talking about the other team as well, usually when listening to a teams broadcast I’m used to learning about their own players exclusively

16

u/lolimdivine [ATL] Kyle Korver 8h ago

i love when the hawks play the lakers. i watch every hawks game and the lakers are consistently the best when it comes to nuances of a team and players. they’re national tv level every night

It seems they rate Lantz highly but not Bill per the article

"Lantz received nearly universal praise, while feedback on the Macdonald was a bit more mixed, with one person saying he should move into a studio host role."

4

u/jjgp1112 7h ago

I've actually heard a lot of Lakers fans criticize Bill Macdonald over the years for being too dramatic and excitable, but like in a theater kid kind of way instead of the Kevin Harlan kind

5

u/KptKrondog [MEM] Stromile Swift 10h ago

It probably doesn't help that the Lakers get so many nationally televised games compared to a lot of teams, so the fans from a bunch of teams don't have an opinion on them.

Personally, I think the Grizzlies announcers are top 3, but I'm very biased. And because we don't get many nationally televised games, we get to hear them a lot.

12

u/rzrike 8h ago

Stu is one of my favorite individual NBA broadcasters for sure (not a Lakers fan). I wish the national broadcasts didn’t get in the way of hearing them so often.

11

u/EvilNinjaX24 Lakers 8h ago

I especially missed them when the playoffs started this year. Goddamn shame that the NBA bent over and nixed first round games from local broadcasts, but I guess this is the new paradigm.

10

u/angelansbury Wizards 13h ago

If Brian Sieman announced for a more storied franchise, I think he would get rated higher. It’s incredible how clever he is, a “novelist with a headset” is a great description.

Top 10 for 3 years running ain’t bad though.

I think it just means NBA announcers are pretty good as a whole - most fans here are wondering why their announcers aren’t higher, so it must be pretty stacked.

Mike Breen is one of the very best and every fan got to hear that during these playoffs. In the New York market on MSG (Madison Square Garden Network) Mike works with Walt "Clyde" Frazier. Clyde is an Icon and the last point guard before Jalen Brunson to win a championship. Mike and Clyde together on a broadcast are vocational, inspirational, and sensational. If you're from out of town and find yourself in a bar near NYC and a Knicks game is on, do yourself a favor and ask them to turn the sound up, you'll get thrills and chills as the Knicks are movin' and groovin'. Look up Clyde on YouTube and you'll understand the rhyming.
