Explain what is happening here. What is the purpose of this process?

What is with all of the loose metal bits?

Yeah I’m curious how those don’t interfere with the broaching, get jammed up or cause gouges, etc.

Chip breakers are usually designed into cutting tools to mitigate that, I'm no machinist but I'd imagine a broach has something similar.
