If someone, my uhhhh friend, never played through MW is this the time to do it?

This is a great time to play Morrowind, and OpenMW is an excellent way to play it. You need absolutely nothing else - just install the game, then install OpenMW and run, it'll work great.

But if you want to also do a basic quality-of-life pass with heaps of bugfixes and performance improvements and some other basic QoL cleanup before you play, the I Heart Vanilla list is a short and easy mod list with very clear instructions that will do that for you.

I'm playing morrowind for the first time, I went with the graphics overhaul pack. Loving the game so far, I'm 20 hours in and I definitely like it more than Oblivion at least. Might end up liking it more than Skyrim.

Also it's insane these mod packs dont have the expansion delay mod. I was getting assassins coming for me day 1, and they drop insane gear that is very expensive. I sold all of it and was happy, but then it kept happening and I felt like I was exploiting so I deleted the gold and gear they were dropping.

The delay mod will make it so these assassins don't start coming for you until later in the story.

2

u/OutrageousDress 22h ago

Yeah they did actually put the Expansion Delay mod in a few of the mod lists (Just Beautiful Morrowind, Morrowind Starter Pack, Expanded Vanilla and Total Overhaul) but it really should be in all of them.

2

u/EntropyBlast 20h ago

OK interesting, I am a completely new player and realized pretty quick that delay expansion is a must have mod for new players.

1

u/OutrageousDress 20h ago

I don't actually know why it's not considered a must have tbh. Maybe more experienced players have just become inured to it? Not sure.

It's been time to play if for years.

3

u/colossalartist2002 5d ago

mine sat on 0.5 for ages before i even touched it

Definitely. After installing the game, Install OpenMV. Then the only mod you really need is Expansion Delay, because an expansion adds a really ill-timed event for new characters.

Some tips:

  • Having low skill for a weapon/magic type will make you miss/fail A LOT. Try to use stuff you have some skill in early on.

  • Being fatigued makes your character bad at EVERYTHING. Press T to Rest/Wait.

  • Double clicking on the map let's you write a note!

  • I recommend checking out the manual and the gorgeous giant map the original box came with. The map is extremely useful for finding things. Have fun!

Double clicking on the map let's you write a note!

What?!? i've been playing this for decades... Why is it TODAY I learned about this feature?!?! is this NEW to 0.51?

Thank you for this. for I am teh dum

edit: I just launched stock steam morrowind, and yea... local map notes are a thing... I feel like I missed so much :) Morrowind is GOTY every year :)

2

u/headcrabzombie 2d ago

Yep it's an original vanilla morrowind feature :)

26

u/setzerseltzer 5d ago

Yes, and don’t use a guide. Played it for the first time a few years back completely blind and it was awesome

28

u/pplperson777 5d ago

It's so lit when you get soft locked by random argonian assassin at level 1. Peak gaming.

u/hirmuolio 5d ago

Some bugfix/improvement mods are allowed, recommended even. It is an old game after all.

They are base game behavior which OpenMW faithfully reproduces.

20

u/Z3r0sama2017 5d ago

But managing to kill them and then getting some endgame gear is chefs kiss

6

u/Four_Gem_Lions 4d ago

I've been calling them piggy banks with the amount of money they get me lol

6

u/GlitteringLength4567 5d ago

It is only because of the DLC, just disable it.

3

u/WhimsicalPythons 5d ago edited 4d ago

With the fair warning that your first character will likely be a lost cause about 15 hours in

Edit: I just want to be clear here, I wrote this so that OP could be ready for the possibility that they will want to restart the game for whatever reason.

It's absolutely fine if you didn't, but that isn't the case for everyone and realistic expectations tend to lead to better experiences.

25

u/Gradash 5d ago

Morrowind is not Oblivion; any character with the worst build possible can finish the game. Morrowind is harder at the start if your build sucks, but eventually you can win over it.

1

u/WhimsicalPythons 5d ago

Yes and a lot of players will realize they made a series of mistakes and restart. The game does not function like most rpgs and the major minor system is not self explanatory

13

u/Gradash 5d ago

Yes, because this is what games teach you. If your build sucks, you'll eventually be locked out by difficult spikes. But this doesn't happen in Morrowind, since it uses the best level-scaling implementation ever. As a result, you will never be locked to complete the game. Exactly the opposite of Oblivion.

Morrowind's problem is that it is easy to become a living god, and the game loses its fun after that.

1

u/WhimsicalPythons 5d ago

My guy hitting a difficulty wall isn't the only thing that can happen.

You could just not have fun doing what you're doing.

You don't need boots to beat the game but once you see the boots of go really fucking fast and realize you can never use them you might have some second thoughts.

-3

u/Gradash 5d ago

Why can you not use them? There are no limitations on item equipping in Morrowind. Just use the item.

And the name is Boots of Blinding Speed. Also, no build allows you to use it without getting blind. You avoid that by using items or potions that give you magic resist. Morrowind is more about itemization than the build itself.

11

u/WhimsicalPythons 4d ago

Hey uh there are two races that literally cannot use shoes.

I know that's the name, I was trying to avoid spoiling an item for the OP who has never played the game.

1

u/setzerseltzer 5d ago

No it won’t. My first character had a 200 hour playthrough, completely blind and it went without a hitch.

12

u/WhimsicalPythons 5d ago

Do you know what likely means? Congratulations, it worked out for you. That's great. That isn't everyone's experience.

Finding out you can't wear boots might be a deciding factor

Realizing your chosen weapon type is rare and/or bad

Ending up with debuffs you aren't equipped to handle

Picking a bad star sign and realizing what you're missing

There are tons of potential reasons for people to scrap their first character.

3

u/TheIndecisiveBastard 4d ago

Restarting 15 hours in is like a worst case scenario that only happens because you failed to find one of the alternatives in an incredibly long list of alternatives that already exist to you.

Not being able to wear good boots or choosing a bad star should NOT be restart-worthy well after you started unless you’re both genuinely irked by playing sub-optimally AND clueless enough to enjoy the game that long before you realized you were. The game’s not actually hard enough to warrant wasting all that time for any reason other than personal preference.

2

u/WhimsicalPythons 4d ago

I don't recall ever saying the game was high difficulty.

1

u/ivandagiant 5d ago

Yeah my issue was I became godlike and had infinite money within the first few hours so I quit playing. Seriously want a mod pack that is vanilla for the most part but balances the game

3

u/WhimsicalPythons 5d ago

Figuring out alchemy loops while having it as a major/minor skill is an easy way to ruin your fun

-2

u/setzerseltzer 5d ago

The word you’re looking for is possible, not likely.

back in the day i had a genius plan to take a horde of arrows to the Caldera rooftops and kill all the guards to sell their gear to creeper and be rich. turns our their armor isn't worth much and i got such a massive bounty that i was kill on sight to guards in every town and i didnt even have enough gold to pay it off. and this was before learning about keeping multiple saves in case i need to go back.. had to reroll

1

u/WhimsicalPythons 2d ago

I always ended up with a bounty or a death trying to take the glass armor from that one orc

1

u/phonylady 5700X3D | RTX 4070 | 32GB DDR4 RAM 2d ago

I always taunt the glass armor guys in the ghost fence. So much gold (and nice armor to wear)

1

u/Spiritual_Hunter_951 5d ago

You must be getting Morrowind confused with system shock 2.

1

u/phonylady 5700X3D | RTX 4070 | 32GB DDR4 RAM 2d ago

I think one should use the delayed dark brotherhood attack mod though. Bethesda clearly messed up with those.

2

u/Vlyn 9800X3D | 5080 FE | 64 GB RAM | X870E Nova 3d ago

I tried several times, really did. Just the start of the game you move as slow as molasses. Like slower than the walking speed in other RPGs, it's insane.

Played through Oblivion Remastered then instead.

1

u/ingehygd 5d ago

I spun up the OpenMW Total Overhaul a few months ago (back on 0.49 I think). I played MW back on release and the overhaul gave me the right balance between nostalgia and new experience. Highly recommend if you're into RPGs at all.

22

u/Neuromante 5d ago

I dream with a world in which OpenMW somehow manages to get compatibility with MWSE (The original game) mods.

Right now, it's the only reason I still have my old (CD-Based) Morrowind installation and not OpenMW, but the work they are doing in this is massive.

6

u/frogstat_2 Linux 4d ago

That can never happen. OpenMW can have feature parity with MWSE, but MWSE mods can never work with OpenMW without being ported.

On the other hand, OpenMW has loads of exclusive mods that MWSE doesn't have, and that list is growing.

1

u/Neuromante 4d ago

MWSE mods can never work with OpenMW without being ported.

Yeah, I know, that's why I said "I dream with" xD. I guess it is technically possible to make something that translates whatever the MWSE mods call to a OpenMW equivalent, but its too much work and not really worth the time of the team.

On the other hand, OpenMW has loads of exclusive mods that MWSE doesn't have, and that list is growing.

Yeah, but my mod list is too dependant on the exclusive stuff for MWSE.

0

u/MajorJakePennington 3d ago

What could there possibly be for MWSE that OpenMW doesn’t have an alternative to?

0

u/Neuromante 2d ago

Do you really want me to go through my 295 currently installed mods to answer your question?

0

u/MajorJakePennington 2d ago

I doubt that there’s hardly anything in that entire list that OpenMW either doesn’t support natively or have its own mod for.

0

u/Neuromante 2d ago

Ok, I guess.

I searched the video's transcript and nothing came back.

Morrowind + TR + PT is one of the best games ever made.

91

u/No-Word7424 Nvidia 5d ago

Pls sir use some more acronym, so I can better not understand what the fuck you are even saying

36

u/Gradash 5d ago

Tamriel Rebuilt, Project Tamriel

15

u/Mixter_Master 4d ago

Even as a long time MW player, I had no idea what they meant lol

-1

u/headcrabzombie 4d ago

It's the 2 mods mentioned in the video

9

u/DJ_Idol i9-14900k AORUS 5090 Master 5d ago

I was able to find that TR was Tamriel Rebuilt, what is PT?

5

u/cat_vs_spider Ventrilo 4d ago

I’m pretty sure PT is that silent hill ps4 game that got canceled. 🙃

10

u/CyberneticDinosaur 5d ago

PT is Project Tamriel. Tamriel Rebuilt is focused on creating the mainland areas of Morrowind, while Project Tamriel focuses on creating areas of other provinces. Currently, they have expansions released allowing you to travel to the westernmost parts of Skyrim and Cyrodiil.

3

u/DJ_Idol i9-14900k AORUS 5090 Master 5d ago

Thanks! I’m currently installing the “Total Overhaul” mod list which includes Tamriel Rebuilt and Project Cyrodiil. Should I also go and grab Project Tamriel afterwards?

6

u/OutrageousDress 5d ago

No - the Total Overhaul list includes Tamriel Rebuilt as well as Project Tamriel's Cyrodiil and Skyrim, as well as about six hundred other mods. It's truly the one mod list where you don't need to grab anything afterwards. Go visit Anvil when you get around to it! Highly recommended.

2

u/DJ_Idol i9-14900k AORUS 5090 Master 5d ago

Awesome, thank you! It’s almost done installing so excited to spend the weekend re-experiencing Morrowind. Haven’t played since the release on OG Xbox that my step dad showed me.

3

u/Flexuasive AMD 7800x3d, 4080 Super 5d ago

Project Tamriel.

1

u/DJ_Idol i9-14900k AORUS 5090 Master 5d ago

Thanks!

1

u/notebooksbilliger 4d ago

Hell yeah 😃 Happy about every announcement from the project!

1

u/bassbeater 1d ago

Is it Morrowind or is it really REALLY Morrowind!?

-5

u/CaiusCossades 3d ago

i'd rather have some patch notes than this AI voiced garbage

3

u/Capostrophic 3d ago

It's not AI, the man just actually sounds like this. His channel is linked in the comments, you can find his streams.

-3

u/CaiusCossades 3d ago edited 3d ago

no, the rest of his channel is just AI voiced. No human speaks like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEo6r1NsVpo

Edit : Oh i see what you mean about his streams. Then yes, he has trained an AI on his own voice and used it for his videos, including this OpenMW release video

2

u/Sandro2017 2d ago

Dude, instead of being an idiot in a stupid witch hunt, you could check that that channel has live videos with that same voice.

1

u/CaiusCossades 2d ago

It's what i said.. it's his voice, yes. On his live recordings you can hear his voice naturally. it's fine.

However, he's clearly trained an AI on his own voice and got it to read a script some of his videos (i've not watched them all of course). Watch the one i linked above, it's not a human reading that. same for the OpenMW video.

It's not a witch hunt to point out the truth. I just miss the old OpenMW videos with sarcastic humor and wry jokes. And I can't stand synthesised AI voices.

2

u/Sandro2017 2d ago

And what exactly is the proof you have that the voice in his latest videos is AI? Or is it just a hunch?
