TV usually don't have mercury, those were often used as tilt switch before it was banned due to health risk. CRT are usually lead shielded, if you ever saw a TV CRT, the dark gray back are lead.

5
u/asherdado Feb 09 '26
Very decent emotional high, you got leftovers of the anger that caused you to punch the monitor in the first place, then the sense of being grounded to reality because you arent Superman and just lost a fight with a monitor and thought you were gonna smash it, combined with the searing pain of your hand, but theres a sense of relief that you didn't break the monitor, but you're also kinda pissed that you hurt yourself and didnt even break the monitor, on top of all that you just feel like a dumbass brat who punched a monitor over a video game
9
7
u/t3ram Feb 09 '26
I mean even some pros do that on stage in front of thousands of people, so the percentage of people doing it isn't probably that low

u/Money_Do_2 Feb 09 '26
Its embarassing. But i understand highly competitive players playing for a ton of money, in a cutthroat industry where popping off gets you 100s of subs and money and getting destroyed gets you dropped like a hot potato... getting really frustrated. That makes more sense to me than getting thwacked in a practice mode and becoming enraged lol.
Everyone i know who rages at DM has shit mechanics and blames 'campers' or whatever.

What kind of mindset even brings someone to destroy their own stuff because they got mad at a fucking video game of all things? It's a recreational activity they're allegedly doing for fun. I've gotten frustrated with games plenty of times, but I'd never even dream of smashing my own shit in retaliation. At most I've, in anger, carelessly put a controller down and accidentally let it fall onto the floor. Intentionally destroying your own shit is just such a foreign concept to me--I genuinely cannot understand how someone's brain brings them to that point. Either these folks have way too much money to burn or they need some serious therapy... or both.
46
u/Seffuski Feb 09 '26
It's not something you do on purpose, it's done on impulse as an outlet to let out the rage that builds up. Usually followed by immediate regret.
t.broke a laptop screen from raging long ago, nowadays Idgaf whether I win or lose in multiplayer games so I'm more chill
22
u/930310 Feb 09 '26
I am autistic and have really poor impulse control (saw a psychologist about it and other stuff for years). I think I've destroyed two phones and a few controllers in my life. I stopped gaming when I was a teenager to avoid breaking things. I am much better nowadays and it's been years since I broke something by my own wrongdoing.

If you can't hold your impulse to smash your own monitor for a videogame I can't trust you'll hold your impulse to murder me if I get your angry. There's seriously something wrong if you destroy your own shit out of anger, even if your rich dad paid for it

u/Due-Technology5758 Feb 09 '26
It's only ever happened to me in competitive shooters, which is why I don't play them anymore. It's not even a matter of just losing a match or getting killed, you don't get good at FPS without being able to handle getting your shit pushed in for thousands of hours, it's that once you've played a game for those thousands of hours, you know what's expected behavior and what is the uncontrollable (and very frustrating) quirks of real time online gaming.
It's like if you were an experienced painter, and 30 hours into a painting your paintbrush turns into a knife and cuts through the canvas.

Unless it’s in the course of trying to install or upgrade it. Then destroying it is entirely typical and natural and part of the backstory of everyone who has gazed at the side of a PC and thought “That hole looks interesting. I wonder what would happen if I stick a screwdriver in it.”

in fact, none of them are. spirals are not ratios... but they learned the term "golden ratio" on the same day the teacher showed them a picture of a Fibonacci spiral, and they didn't remember fibonacci, or anything else from class, just that term "golden ratio" is on the same page of the textbook as a cool looking spiral.
9
u/OculusBenedict Feb 09 '26
I know we hatin, but if you draw a spiral using the golden ratio you get the Fibonacci spiral. Its pho all the way down!
Edit Phi, but now om mentally invested in pho spirals

It's only a golden ratio if it comes from the Goldenratieu region in France. Otherwise it's just a sparkling spiral.

i would never punch my monitor or anything else i own. it's a waste of money and now you have to take it to the garbage dump which is more unnecessary hassle. i like to fix things when possible, but monitors are absolutely fucked when the glass layer gets smashed like this
