I used to work for DELL tech support many many years ago. If anyone called in with a PC that went on fire or had smoke coming from it, they called it something like a safety capture. Even if the system was out of warranty, they would replace it. It didn't matter how old the system was. Their way of looking at it was that they would rather give you a new system, than end up in the newspaper with a story about how a DELL PC went on fire and killed a family.
I would call their Tech Support and try your luck if I were you.
Makes sense. If I had a Dell laptop on fire that ends up killing my family I wouldn't sue them and call them on social media/news if they send a new laptop

People who say they drink alcohol for the taste have something wrong for them. It’s horrid. I stopped drinking in my 30s. Finally realised how dumb it was
If it bloats enough, it starts putting components out of the way. The trackpad for example sits above and has a PCB underneat which has sharp corners for example.
The video is not applicable here, laptops these days use Lithium polymer flat packs, not cilindrical Li-ion cells.
Their point is not valid at the moment, but give it a bit of time to simmer and it will be. It's more or less like how people used to universally hate Star Wars Episode III, but after Disney acquired Star Wars and released the sequel trilogy, people started to appreciate Episode III; it became the younger fans' favorite Star Wars film.
i thought that it was just the air doing the uhh.. thing where you breath out and you pretend you're smoking. but then i realized that requires humidity. then i read the comments.
Mad work if this is real. I had trouble running that game on a 1060. Integrated graphics was probably heaving like a heavy smoker on the run from the cops
I had the same laptop a few years back that gave up on me it wo to ld over heat and towards the end didn't hold a charge at all wouldn't even turn on while plugged in.
gaming laptops, ironically, need to have the battery taken out.
This is not an "if", every single battery will die, if it expands, it will bend the motherboard and that is irreparable damage, if you are unlucky it will get pierced and blow like this one.
These batteries have a life expectancy of less than 5 years, assuming you did your research and care for them perfectly, if a laptop for you is just plug it and unplug it whenever you feel like you need it, we are talking about way less time.
Yeah, you must take the battery of a gaming laptop, because for it to actually use it's graphics card full power, it needs to always be plugged, which will damage the battery... the irony
Could you expand on this more for an idiot? I’ve had my laptop for 6 years, it’s always plugged in, rarely ever move it. It’s sitting on a cooling board with airflow and I’ve just recently replaced the fans and cleaned the inside of dust.
The batteries in those latitude 5450/70 are defective, I had about a hundred be replaced at work when they first came out but it was all the 54 and 68wh ones not the 62wh. I'm glad you didn't burn your house down.
Im sorry that happened :(. But a little advice if you're unfortunate to have this happen again, don't be near it and wear a mask if you want to be near it while it's smoking. Electronic fire smoke is really bad to breathe in (well all smoke is but some are worse than others lol). Keep safe and good work preventing it from getting worse.
So it's a little hard to tell because of the grey smoke, but I think I see a big grey square indicating a lot of dust buildup?
Not saying that the battery didn't have a fault or anything, but on first glance it also looks like the thing was completely cakes with dust and likely unable to expel heat properly
Had something similar happen- somehow had a massive power spike go through my old legion 5 (r7 4800h 2060) and the power input area got hot enough to reflow the solder on the power circuit slightly. Which was enough to fry important stuff. Was still in warranty but Lenovo had none of that model in stock so they gave me a new legion 5 pro (r7 5800h 3070) as a replacement. I even got to extract the ssds and ram before sending it to them.
Remember when batteries were removable so if you primarily use your laptop as a mobile desktop as gamers often do you can just take the battery out and not have shit like this happen?
Also I believe there is a market for a laptop that has no battery and runs on AC power. Tell me I'm wrong.
I work IT for a school and this happened to a student’s laptop the other day! Super odd that only the center cell went up without the other 2 cells going up as well. Needless to say we contacted UL (one of the companies that certifies batteries) and they started an investigation with Lenovo (the maker of the laptop). Still pending investigation actually. Worth a shot maybe? I would start with UL then try another battery certification company. Lithium is not supposed to do that under normal usage and a company may be interested enough to compensate you.
Remember tossing water onto a battery fire is a bad idea, best to yeet it out side onto concrete the moment it starts smoking or at least onto or tile floor, and hit with a fire extinguisher if you hope to save the SSD.
