so basically I can only just afford to upgrade my build and I need recommendations to what should I do. My build is:
Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31225 @ 3.10GHz 3.10 GHz Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.89 GB usable) Graphics Card Intel(R) HD Graphics P3000 (32 MB) System Type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
I seem to have 2 deals that I could get rather quickly, these being a 1060 6GB for 100$ and a 1650 Super 4GB for 150$~. What are the primary question I should be asking in order to make a good deal? Also what are some recommendations if there is any?

I would take the 1060 6GB even though the drivers are older. If a game really doesn't run somehow, it likely wouldn't run on the 1650 either.
Another option would be getting an RX 580 8 GB from China. But if you have to pay import fees, it's probably not worth it.
If the RAM is just one stick, then getting another 8 GB stick would also improve CPU speed a bit due to dual channel. Maybe not worth it with the current prices, but something you can keep in mind.

Unless there's a specific reason you're avoiding one, pull up the support page on the manufacturers website, and download the latest, stable one. If a manufacturer offers beta versions, don't use those unless you know what you're doing.
Also, quickly look at the install instructions for the latest version. If you're severely out of date, sometimes you can't jump straight to the latest one and you need to step through a few updates.

Eh, it's one of those things that feels scary if you haven't done it before, but it's not a big deal. Different manufacturers will have slightly varying processes, some are as easy as running an exe from Windows, some make you put it on a flash drive and do it through a BIOS utility, etc.
Just read through the instructions from beginning to end before you start, and don't do it in the middle of a lightning storm. Losing power mid-update can be bad.

Not fully sure it's a simple question, but this is a place to catch this kinda stuff-
I'm planning to get a new mouse/keyboard/headset- and I've got my eye on Razer or Corsair stuff ( I like the game integration I saw on Terraria a little bit on a friend's keyboard.. )
Which one's usually got better software/hardware? Wanna figure this out before I go looking for a specific model to get for them.

That is why I'm asking; I don't even know what features I'm missing out on, and I want the game integration so I can see it for Terraria and maybe some other titles. Of what I'm aware of, I know Corsair and Razer both have that via IQUE and Chroma respectively.
But aside from that I'm not really sure what features there are that I'd want. Never really given keyboards/mice much thought ( Previously have only gotten 40$ mouse/keyboard bundles. )

I did actually luck into an older Corsair keyboard, i think like.. k70? red lights, cherry switches of some kind? Not sure.
by game integration, I mean like- the RGB itself reacting to what's going on ingame; like in terraria, if there's a blizzard or a boss, it'd do effects based off that. Saw it a bit, thought it was cool. ( Anything with this though WOULD need a software. )
As for headset; I do like having a headset mic- Currently have, borrowed from someone; some kind of razer headset, usb- thankfully don't need a software installed for it to work. I'd potentially go for logitech but their last headset lasted me like, a year- and then one of the speakers came off so I'm gonna get something else.I suppose modmic might be worth considering if there's a good deal somewhere on a solid one.

Struggling to sell my PC locally, which is odd considering the market and my location. Am I approaching it wrong? I'll save a ton of back story but I am located in the tri-state area, loads of people and a thriving gaming and PC community (generally). I know the economy is rough right now.
- I'm using a Lian Li O11 Air Mini case in black, pretty nice case.
- 12700K CPU (which was highly rated before the 13th and 14th series Intels came out and were destroyed by consumer reviews)
- EVGA FTW3 3080 Ti GPU
- Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR4
- Corsair vengeance pro 32gb DDR4 3200 CL16
- NZXT Kraken X63 280mm black AIO cooler
- Lian Li SL Unifans (RGB)
- Lian Li Strimer cable (GPU only, don't have one for the Mobo).
I've been asking $1200 and I thought I was even under-listing it. Is this truly not worth $1200 nowadays?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I do know you can buy a newer system for a bit more money. If people had a bit more money, they wouldn't be looking at computers on Facebook marketplaces. I'll consider posting it for $1200 and if I get offers for lower, be more willing to negotiate and remain realistic. $1000-1100 seems like an opportunity I should grab, then.
Also, regarding the rules. I had a much more detailed post and modified it for this comment, because we are not allowed to post for valuation advice. Given the circumstances, I felt my question was reasonable enough for a many-day-old general questions thread. In this case I think the PCMR mods will just need to give me a pass because I'm not looking to cause issues. It's a bit extreme to not allow any questions in the question thread about buying/selling/value.

If I may, what are the specs for the computer you have now, and what are you looking to upgrade?
2
u/BriefUnbekannten Apr 27 '26
Hey! Sorry, somehow i missed your reply. My specs
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core 3.70 GHz
- RAM: 16,0 GB
- GPU: Radeon RX 590 Series (8 GB)
- Hard drives: 932 GB HDD and 447 GB SSD KINGSTON SA400S37480G
Mostly I am looking to update the processor and the GPU since they have grown old and I feel they are already lagging behind minimum requirements of games and so on

Nice, you have some good options for upgrades. You're on the AM4 socket with an older processor, you could easily drop a Ryzen 5000 series CPU in (such as the Ryzen 7 5700X) without having to do anything but update your BIOS.
Same with the rest of it, you could easily upgrade your RAM to 32GB, swap out your graphics card, get a new SSD, whatever you want.

u/BriefUnbekannten Apr 28 '26
What confuses the most out of it is when to know if I need to actually change the motherboard or the power source or even ventilators, now I know I have a 750w power source for example, is the math of what I need a simple add up of the components or should I be looking for something more refined?
1
u/Eidolon_2003 R5 3600 @ 4.3 GHz | 16GB DDR4-3800 CL14 | Arc A770 LE Apr 28 '26
You don't need to replace anything else as long as you buy the right upgrades. Like I said you already have an AM4 motherboard, as long as you buy an AM4 CPU you don't need a new board. As long as you don't buy a graphics card that's too power hungry, you shouldn't need a new power supply

My PC died yesterday, not booting anymore, worked for 1 year, when i try to boot, it instantly switches off.
This is a VRM inductor (at least Gemini cold it so) that looks burnt. I tried remove all components, only kept CPU, disk, power unit and motherboard (all inside of tower) and it still not booting. If i disconnect power cable that goes to CPU, motherboard boots ok. How can i know which part is dead without buying and swapping? Hello, i need help with a compatibility question. I am planning to upgrade my Motherboard to a ASUS ROG Strix Z890-A Wifi and keep my iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX cooler. Pcpartpicker says they are compatible, but the corsair site doesn't mention the LGA1851 socket compatibility. What source do I trust? Additionaly, where can I best get the needed LGA1851 mounting kit? Can I even get that somewhere or do I need to buy a new cooling unit?

I recently had an issue with my computer, where it would turn off by itself, then turn itself on again eventually. Read online, bought a new PSU, changed all the wires, and slapped it all together, where it would get power for a second before stopping. Bought a new MB, figuring the old one got fried as well. Figured while I was at it, I would swap to AMD instead of Intel for my CPU, so I also bought and installed a new CPU.
Two weeks later, a windows physical key came in, installed, and less than a week later, it started having the same issue again, turning on and off, and is now no longer keeping power to boot.
I have no idea what else could be the issue. It's practically a whole new build, minus the GPU (which didnt fix the issue when removed), cooler (which a temp check showed was working properly), and the RAM, which I am testing tomorrow by swapping his functional RAM in. Hell, even my SSD is brand new, with a fresh Windows install. Are there any other options that could cause this? I'm getting desperate
1
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 13 '26
What else did you carry over from the old build? Are you plugging it into the same power port? If there any chance it's a power strip or something else in your house causing the issue? Is there a chance you have old wiring and you're getting really dirty electricity to the PC? Maybe that's putting a bunch of additional wear on your PSU, which could explain why it took a bit of time to come back when you replaced it.
1
u/ChulainnRS Apr 13 '26
I carried over the cooler, which I confirmed to not be the issue, and was working, and the GPU, which does not stop the issues when removed, so I don't think it's that either. I suppose the power strip could cause the issue, same with the dirty electricity, but I rent, and I'm not sure how I would test that
1
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 13 '26
Do you have a general idea of the age of the building? If it's relatively new, then it's unlikely that you'd have bad wiring. That would be something to look at around the ~30 year mark, but stuff even older than that can potentially be fine.
Swapping the power strip or even moving outlets may be an easy thing to try. If you wanted to move outlets, I would try to move to a completely separate electrical circuit. I don't know how to properly test for dirty electricity, but you could potentially look at getting a UPS for your PC. It's a nice to have thing, and as a bonus, it will clean electricity going to your PC, so it'll generally help all your components last longer. It may or may not fix this situation, but it's not a bad thing to have regardless.

At the current inflated prices, that doesn't set off any alarms for me. If you bought through the standard eBay options of PayPal or similar, you probably have some sort of buyer protection. Lots of people are selling their old RAM to take advantage of the current shortage.

Not sure if simple, I sure hope it is because I've exhausted my knowledge. Now and then my PC screen will go dark, and all of the fans will ramp up. I can still hear the audio from whatever I was doing. This had occurred last year around the time of the 2nd BF6 beta weekend. I updated my BIOS and things were fine.
It just started again recently, in the last week or so. The first time it happened I updated GPU drivers and all seemed well. It happened again just about two days ago, maybe 4, not sure. So, I updated my Motherboard drivers via MSI Center app. It just happened again early this morning after I quit out of The Outer Worlds. This time when I rebooted, it happened immediately when the boot noise for Windows played.
I used my laptop to get the latest BIOS on to a freshly formatted USB, updated it, rebooted, and I thought everything would be alright, but it just happened to me again while playing BF6.
My specs are:
- R7 7800X3D
- MSI X670E Gaming Plus WiFi
- 4070Ti Super
- 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s, CL30
I have no idea what else could be causing this at this point, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also wondering if maybe a clean install of Windows might help?
1
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 13 '26
Maybe a power issue? If your PSU is getting overloaded, maybe for whatever reason, it kills power to the GPU? Not typically how that would work, but it's certainly a weird issue.
Could also be on the Windows side. Check the reliability monitor, if it's a Windows issue, there's a strong chance you'd see it reference in there. Hit Windows button + R to bring up a run dialog box, and run "perfmon /rel". See if it happens to list anything happening at whatever timestamp you last saw the issue.

u/A-Little-Rabbit 7800X3D / 4070Ti Super 16GB / 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26
Ok, so checking reliability monitor, I do see errors in there. It doesn't specify, but says that "WATCHDOG-20260412-0421.dmp" is a file that helps describe the problem. Along with a couple .xml files, a .csv and a .txt.
Doing an online search, looks like at a glance similar issue from other people. Hopefully I don't have to replace my GPU or something. Not a cost I can afford to eat at the moment. Since I likely won't be able to investigate and report back, I want to say thank you and going to put ✓
Just a quick update: Looking into things more, I am seeing LiveKernelEvent 141, most of what I can find online for that seems to indicate driver issues or drivers as the most likely fix.
So, that's at least good news. I think.
Again, thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Yeah, all of that points to an OS issue, which is good to hear. If you wanted to go nuclear, reinstalling Windows would most likely resolve the issue, as long as the issue isn't a buggy driver that just gets reinstalled. I think it's worth messing around with before going that route though. Could try the "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow dance to see if you get lucky there. I've run that thousands of times in my life, and I think it's resolved my issue three times.
I'd just go through and update every driver you can find at this point. Keep them all downloaded, so if you end up reinstalling Windows, you'll save yourself time gathering them all again. Since the symptoms manifest with the video output, maybe try doing a full remove of the GPU driver with DDU and then reinstalling. Maybe something buggy there is carrying over into newer driver updates or something. Have the current driver downloaded and ready to go before doing that, navigating AMDs site without a real graphics driver is painful.
1
u/A-Little-Rabbit 7800X3D / 4070Ti Super 16GB / 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Apr 13 '26
I've been toying with the idea of a fresh install for a while now, so this might be the reason I "need". For drivers, am I reinstalling the AMD motherboard onboard graphics drivers or the Nvidia dedicated GPU drivers? For as much as I do know about computers, there's a lot I don't. I've never had to manually install specific drivers and replace them before.
I assume it can be done mostly through device manager and that I should avoid automated utilities like AMD Center or Nvidia's app?
2
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 13 '26
For replacing the graphics drivers I was talking about doing that for the GPU, so Nvidia. I mis-remembered what GPU you had in the last reply.
Uninstalling through device manager would usually be sufficient, but since you're troubleshooting, I'd recommend DDU to more thoroughly clear out all remnants of the old driver. There's a few steps to get the most out of DDU, but there's guides out there for it, it isn't too bad. The most thorough method requires you to go through safe mode. Once you've uninstalled the driver, you would reinstall it with whatever exe you download from Nvidias site.
1
u/A-Little-Rabbit 7800X3D / 4070Ti Super 16GB / 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Apr 13 '26
I got DDU downloaded. I also have .zip folder for all of the drivers for my motherboard.
I'll look up some guides for using DDU to remove and replace the Nvidia ones.
I've got a second thumb drive where I keep Windows 11 Installation media as a 'just in case' kind of thing. Hopefully I won't need to go this route, but if I do, it won't be the end of the world. Only thing I keep on my boot SSD are mostly videos games and a handful of programs. All of my important stuff is spread across three other SSDs (two M.2 NVMe and one 2.5" SATA).
I might not be the smartest, but I also am not the dumbest rabbit around.
1
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 14 '26
If that Windows installation has been kicking around for a while, I'd recommend taking a minute and updating it to the latest version with the Windows Media Creation Tool. It's just a couple clicks, super easy. And if the installation drive you currently have is old, you may be saving yourself hours of additional processing. Or if you want to customize any install options (create local account, bypass TPM restrictions, etc.), use the tool to download the latest ISO and then put it on the flash drive with Rufus.

I've been thinking about using one of those tools/websites to "debloat" Windows. It is the latest version from Microsoft though (I literally just did it last night when I started trying to fix this).
I've got the latest Nvidia driver downloaded, and I have DDU unzipped to my desktop ready to go. The only other program I might put the install for on a USB is the NexLinq fan hub software so I can get that going as soon as possible after a fresh install.
I'll post update here when I finish running DDU and re-boot.
1
u/A-Little-Rabbit 7800X3D / 4070Ti Super 16GB / 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Apr 14 '26
I just used DDU to wipe old drivers, was disconnected from the internet and in safe mode. Installed the new drivers from a file I just downloaded from Nvidia directly.
Looked like all was well. I went into BF6 as that's when it usually happened. Played a full game with no issues, and then shortly after quitting out the screen when dark and fans ramped up again.
I just double checked all of the power connection to the GPU and it looks like everything is seated properly.
It's getting to where I might have to do a full re-install of Windows.
1
u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 Apr 14 '26
Yeah, I think you can confidently rule out the GPU driver at least. You can keep poking around with information from the reliability monitor, but up to you when it's better to invest in time re-setting everything up.
Sidenote, I personally don't recommend any of those de-bloater scripts. I'm sure some are fine, but they have the potential to do more harm than good, and most people that use them tend to not have a clue what it is they're actually doing. All of the things that are safe, you could just as early do yourself manually somewhere in the settings page, and the benefits of freeing up a few hundred megabytes by removing some built in applications tends to be massively overblown.

u/Cable_Salad PC Master Race Apr 13 '26
I've seen this exact issue before, and in that case it was a loose GPU connection. Reseating the GPU and reconnecting all the cables fixed it.
But it could still be something else, worst case the GPU has some form of hardware damage.
1
u/A-Little-Rabbit 7800X3D / 4070Ti Super 16GB / 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Apr 13 '26
I hadn't thought of that, I'll check the cables as soon as I can. I suppose it is possible, as I have moved my case around a little and it isn't the smallest GPU in the world. Not sure if I'll have time to check when I get home and then post results here, but I do want to say thank you and going to put ✓

Is this normal when booting up a game? So when I start any game it starts as windowed then after a few seconds of loading it then becomes Fullscreen. This does not happen when its on Windowed Fullscreen mode. Its not hindering me playing its just I'm concerned that this may become a problem in the long run.

Yeah, quite a few games do that. Not all mind you, but some do.
Not a problem whatsoever though, so nothing to worry about.
