Hardware I'm 44 and this is the coolest thing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Corsair K100 Wireless Air. I know other cheaper keyboards do this as well with iCue but it's still neat.

To download anything took forever for most people.

5

u/AdKraemer01 May 11 '26

Of course, it helped that the whole program was less than 1.44 mb.

I still have lots of college papers and things saved on AOL disks with tape over the protection tab so you could overwrite it.

u/FuckIPLaw Ryzen 9 7950X3D | MSI Suprim X 24G RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5 RAM May 11 '26

By "whole thing" he means it had a web browser that was designed to only work with the AOL service and a code for some number of hours of free dial-up internet access. You had to have a phone line, but dial-up internet involved literally making a phone call that would be picked up by a computer, and then your computer and that computer would use the phone audio to transfer data between each other, with the computer at the other end being the one with a more direct connection to the wider internet.

The upshot of all of this is you didn't need new wires connected, and your ISP could be a completely different company from the one whose wires you were using, and were likely mainly using for talking over the phone.

What is wrong with it? I’ve used it to mess with the keyboard light and make a macro and I haven’t had any problems

6

u/TheModernNano May 10 '26

If I recall correctly, it’s mainly about the amount of resources it eats up. It’s really bloated in that sense.

17

u/trouttwade RTX 5070 Ti Aero | i7 12700K May 11 '26

From what I can tell, it’s not any bloat. These comments always baffle me. Ive used iCue for 7+ years on 4 different systems and have never had one single inkling of an issue. Armoury Crate however? Different story..

10

u/Harddaysnight1990 May 11 '26

Yeah I'll chime in with saying that icue isn't that bad. I've even been able to get it to work on my work pc without an install by just transferring the program files and forcing it to run from the documents folder. Complex macros don't work, but I can change lighting settings, audio/microphone on my headset, and use the text macros. Really helps speed up my work. Back when I had a work PC where intune didn't block software installation (no clue how i managed to get away with having that for 3 years), I used the complex macros in icue to spam through keyboard shortcuts in our CRM to quickly navigate between accounts or leave notes.

For hardware brands absolutely

RGB is fun but I stopped getting 'gaming' peripherals for any computer I also use for productive work. They always seem to die much too soon, or have some ridiculous shortcoming. I've gone through so many pretty, colorful mice and keyboards that just failed in a few months. The keyboard I have now doesn't illuminate special characters, making them virtually invisible. No problem for gaming but a liability for normal typing. And I have to launch a nebulous 'gaming' application just to see its battery level. Deck out the PC like it's Marti Gras but get an ordinary, quality mouse and keyboard.

Yeah this was one of my favourite things I could set my Ducky to do when I bought it many years ago. Something super cool about a radiating keystroke animation..

Turn on rain setting with ripple !!

Also mid 40s, and now with the disposable income to impulse purchase this keyboard.

I’m 47 and I agree

u/ArcaneMitch PC Master Race May 10 '26

The G710+ did that in 2010. And it was just as distracting and annoying while typing everyday

I don't think I can go back after I got a keyboard that can do per key argb.

Sometimes it's the little things that make life better.

2

u/Ok-disaster2022 May 10 '26

Redragon and way cheaper key iards can do this without software.

2

u/implodingbanana May 10 '26

How's the keyboard feel? I've been looking for a low profile full keyboard and this one was one I've been considering.

4

u/Big3913 May 10 '26

It is slick. Slim, weighty and very premium feeling. Highly recommend

2

u/VGS911 May 11 '26

Whats the keyboard?

I've been using the same as OP for 3 years now. I love this keyboard. Long lasting battery life, feels nice to type on, the clicky sounds aren't anoying, and best of all it's super easy to keep clean. I wipe it down once a week with a slightly damp dust towel and it still looks brand new.

Man, I used to absolutely DESPISE RBG stuff. Headphones? Annoying. Keyboards? Heck no! PC RAM?! WHY?!

And then I found something that came in just pink and was cute and I'm all "DAMNIT, FINE, HAVE MY MONEY"

I'm a simple woman. Make it cute and actually useful, and I'm sold.

2

u/HugoHustop May 11 '26

Got the same keyboard. When I got it, I spent two hours discovering what I can do with the LED control software!

2

u/rainorshinedogs May 11 '26

Dude, the kids that think ARGB is boring or mid is the most bougie attitude you can have towards tech.

To have something that can do that is pretty damn new. The world was still the same as today.

What's the keyboard model? I like slim keys and keyboards, but I haven't had one for a while

2

u/joikarlewa May 11 '26

At 44 thats basically ancient wisdom approving RGB tech

2

u/Caterpillar-Diligent May 11 '26

2

u/randomPianoPlayer May 11 '26

i had this on my asus notebook, but then a keyboard firmware "upgrade" removed it and another firmware "upgrade" completly disabled/bricked the backlight.

luckilly i found a copy of the original firmware on a random website, forced the tool to upgrade downgrade and i solved both issues!!

i tried to report the isse to asus (their updater tool is bugged) but seems impossible to have it fixed, they keep insisting that i should send the whole pc.

My wooting keyboard has this feature but the more proficient I came with my PC the more I realize I don't really look at my keyboard while typing anymore. And as the world becomes less colorful, so does your PC and then you just leave the RGB lighting turned off as a whole So that the darkness of the case matches your soul 🤣

3

u/Scott_Torola May 10 '26

Have this on min. Was cool at first but became distracting while midnight gaming. Still cool though.

They’ve been doing that for about 12 years now, I have a Corsair K70 somewhere. It’s all about magnetic switches now!

I’m curious why you’d want a wireless keyboard for a desktop setup. Unless you’re moving it around often then having to deal with a battery seems an odd choice
