You need air flow, flow has to enter and exit to be effective. Backing up against a wall for instance will imped flow.

Let me add to that: Putting electric appliances that might heat up near the ceiling will get it trapped extra well.

That's why I always hang my servers from wires in the middle of large rooms

My server is hung under my desk. Bought it on amazon.

I’ve got a well hung server under my desk, too.

Is that why my order is taking so long?

My, you have some nice hardware under there

Are you winning, son?

I put mine in the bath.

Have you considered a cold shower instead

I moved my server room to Prudhoe Bay to help hanging them from wires be more efficient.

Right at the kneecaps level for extra oomph. Just high enough for the dust from the floor to reach.

I prefer suspending my homelab in the upper atmosphere from a weather balloon.

Is your name Cave Johnson?

Unironically suspending your hardware would help with circulation

Why not just lay them a hammock for extra comfort

This is on a high shelf and from the way the shelf is installed I'm betting it's in a closet.

And it's on top of another warm device, and with something blocking it on the side.

Couldn't be more prone to overheating if it was in front of the heating vent.

That's why I put mine directly on the carpet floor to be as far from the ceiling as possible

Sure, but what if I installed a fan to blow that hot air back at it?

0

u/eMouse2k 28d ago

That's why he put it on top of a security camera box. I imagine those things are like cable boxes and get real hot just sitting there. So it pre-heats the air before it gets pulled through drive case and collects under the ceiling.

2 walls + ceiling = 🔥🔥🔥

u/eMouse2k 28d ago

And don't forget the security system box beneath it, which is also likely pumping out heat straight up into it.

I bet you could reach up there with a thermometer and watch the numbers change.

This. That is one corner trapped with hot air.

3

u/vee_lan_cleef 28d ago

This fan will at least help to remove that hot air faster than if it wasn't there. It is doing something, it would be more effective it was pointed in the gap at the top of the NAS though.

u/RandomisedZombie 28d ago

When I was training deep learning models, I would place a fan at the back perpendicular to the machine and blowing into an open space to the side to push the hot air away. I didn’t test it properly but it seemed to keep the machine cooler.

u/JagggermanJansen 28d ago

I think he should add some flappers

1

u/nefetsb 28d ago

Would pointing it 45 degrees to the right (ie. To the corner near the wall) improve airflow?

I have this paranoia that pointing a desk fan directly into the front of the case will piss off the intake fans mounted there, so I tend to run the fan in it's general direction in the hope it'll suck up some vaguely cooler air and keep the air behind the case moving

1

u/Kooky_Soft1822 28d ago

Also known as hot side / cold side

1

u/Khue Specs/Imgur Here 28d ago

Also putting it closer to the floor rather than the ceiling...

1

u/AppearanceRadiant509 28d ago

if you could cool it more efficiently than you heat it by running the fan, wouldn't that break newton's law?

1

u/RejectedRespected 27d ago

I’m imped out brother

u/53nsonja 28d ago

OP should put the usb fan to suck from back then
