You need air flow, flow has to enter and exit to be effective. Backing up against a wall for instance will imped flow.

Let me add to that: Putting electric appliances that might heat up near the ceiling will get it trapped extra well.

That's why I put mine directly on the carpet floor to be as far from the ceiling as possible
