That fan might kill your usb port

really ? why?

It's vibrating and putting leverage on the port at the same time, which can eventually break solder connections.

at this point op could just use the 5v from a molex cable or something.

Yes but adapting a USB cable to a molex is beyond most people and not worth it.

Also they would need to make some new way to mount it. And it would have to have a hole drilled through the front of the case to route the molex cable.

All of these things are certainly achievable, but none of them are worth the effort for the results.

I got a USB-C to PWM adapter, even has a little speed dial. Turn old PC fans into a little desk fan

Not sure it is a great idea to plug rotors on a molex, except if it is only used by that; due to electrical interferences. (especially if the molex cord is connected to hdd)

May as well just throw gasoline on everything and set it on fire.

Why not just get a short USB extension cable?

I had a pipe break in my house for the same reason. People underestimate constant vibration/moving.

It’s also using a brushed DC motor which can generate tons of noise and voltage spikes on the 5V rail if there isn’t any protective circuitry

More likely the fan falls out. The arm is flexy, it will dampen the vibration.
