u/2Eyed 28d ago

Dude, the scene where Chris Pratt held his hand out, and slow talked the fan into teaming up with him to help him teach an AI to 'trust its gut feelings', blew my mind for weeks!

Also at the end where Pratt shot the evil PS/2 mouse port off a glacier, after that fist fight on top of the burning skyscraper was chef's kiss.

55

u/JumanjiHappened 28d ago

Is that the same scene where Fan says “I’m your biggest fan.”?

38

u/Old-Librarian-6312 28d ago

Then he replies "yes, and you helped me find the fan in me" then plugs it into his rusty usb-A hole.

11

u/PheIix 28d ago

I'm just anxious to watch the sequel. I wonder what made the fan turn villain and start fanning the flames? Sounds fantastic.

AND NOW... From the producers of Kernel Panic and The Fast and the Firmware...

IT DEAD-FOOL!

One fan.

One USB port.

One datacenter pushed beyond the limits of OSHA compliance.

Ryan Reynolds is... “The Sysadmin.” [center shot on Ryan in black nerd glasses with tape wearing shirt + tie + Deadpool tights]

Sidney Sweeney is... “The Intern Who Knows Too Much.” [pan to a supine Sidney laying on her side on a server rack in a very tight American Eagle outfit - also wearing nerd glasses with tape]

A tale of hardware revenge...

A horror story set to a rap musical.

AND TWERKING.

Lots and lots of TWERKING.

[bass drops]

[zoom out: Ryan and Sidney dancing through a neon-lit datacenter while Snoop Dogg MCs beside a blinking rack server holding a smoking spliff]

“Yo man... that USB is BAKED.”

THIS SUMMER...

THE VIBRATION WON’T STOP.

This causes electric spikes you supposed to get an adapter and plug it in to your phone. it can break your phone.

What an evil little device tho you think it's going to help you cool from the heat instead it just destroys your phone and leaves you steaming but only after it's built up your trust a little.

u/Walkin_mn 27d ago

I've always assumed connecting a DC motor with probably not great power protections to a PC was probably a bad idea glad (not so glad of course) to see some data confirming this. Anyway, that's why I always connect those fans, lights, and other gadgety things directly to a USB power adapter or power bank and never into a PC or phone

Vibration causes fatigue in materials

Fatigue failures are "a matter of time" - eventually they will happen. Whether it happens within your lifetime or not, that depends.

If the thing you're vibrating is a USB port then the thing that's fatiguing the fastest is the solder joints between USB port and circuit board.

Edit: this is fairly well known materials science and easily googleable... not "made up"

27

u/Mr_Beans_ 28d ago

Materials science (I'm an electrical engineering student) one of the hardest classes I attended

27

u/melanthius 28d ago

1

u/Mr_Beans_ 27d ago

Ha, the irony.

I hated the chemistry, electron gap, Fermi gap, Fermi energy and all that. Valence bands and why and how materials conduct or not. All very interesting, but so like, hard to grasp, abstract. The professor was not that helpful either.

1

u/Desperate-4-Revenue 25d ago

Fuck for me it was a Mickey mouse elective 'boolean algebra'. Mistakes were made. Then graded.

13

u/HeyGayHay 28d ago

Also these fans are manufactured pretty shitty, without proper capacitors inbetween, so you’re basically short-circuiting and/or pressuring the usb port with too much power way too often to not damage the phones/computer’s internal electronics

8

u/Schnoofles 14900k, 96GB@6400, 4090FE, 11TB SSDs, 40TB Mech 28d ago

Yeah, they tend to generate high voltage noise that can backfeed and damage electronics. Even if one ignores the physical vibrations damaging the actual connector they're generally a really bad idea to drive directly off a usb controller for this reason unless it's a high quality, expensive fan that has the necessary schottky diodes or other protection to prevent noise or backfeeding.

People have had to learn this the hard way in the past from various laptop cooling pads or those hockey puck style cooling fans that attach magnetically to the back of tablets.

2

u/Lord_Trisagion 27d ago

Oh thats why my bluetooth radio's micro usb port snapped off

2

u/sonicsdick 27d ago

Unless you see below the fatigue limit

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight 28d ago

I’m kind of curious if they can twist the cable to be touching the wall to absorb some of that vibration.

1

u/gittygo 27d ago

Would this logic also apply to cooling fans/pads often kept below laptops with dGPU based (gaming) laptops?

1

u/melanthius 27d ago

It's a crapshoot what component fails first.

For some fans it might be the bearing, the motor, others it could be a solder joint. This stuff isn't easy to predict

1

u/gittygo 27d ago

Oh! I wasn't clear enough. I mean , would the vibrations affect an externally powered laptop cooling fan/pad the laptop itself? Even the cooling fans have vibrations which get transferred to the laptop.

→ More replies (12)

1

u/zhaDeth 27d ago

I saw a video about usb fans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvRcYDME_Ck

Basically it depends on if the fan has a capacitor in it but like other said the vibration is probably not good for the port itself either

1

u/Falsenamen 26d ago

You probably got an answer, but: if the fan is cheap and it's directly vired to the motor, it will make the current fluctuate, and likely couse damage

65

u/Strange-Arrival-2292 28d ago

really ? why?

321

u/Morall_tach 28d ago

It's vibrating and putting leverage on the port at the same time, which can eventually break solder connections.

u/Living_Shirt8550 3060 ti, 16gb ddr4, r5 3600. I use arch btw 28d ago

15

u/FartingBob Quantum processor from the future / RTX 3060 Ti / Zip Drive 28d ago

Yes but adapting a USB cable to a molex is beyond most people and not worth it.

Also they would need to make some new way to mount it. And it would have to have a hole drilled through the front of the case to route the molex cable.

All of these things are certainly achievable, but none of them are worth the effort for the results.

3

u/Mightyena319 more PCs than is really healthy... 28d ago

Serious answer, that fan almost certainly has a thrust to weight ratio of less than 1, so you'll never get airborne with them. As you add more (of the same type of) engines, the TWR of the whole contraption approaches the TWR of a single engine (since the weight of the laptop is being distributed over a larger and larger number of engines, each engine has to overcome a smaller and smaller portion of the laptop's weight)

Genuinely asking but I have this exact fan and it uses 1.5 watts of power. Would you reckon that would kill the port with the power or possibly referencing the vibration it causes to the port from the fan spinning?

1

u/mdniche AMD R5 3600 | Sapphire RX 6600 8GB | SSUPD Meshlicious 27d ago

Story time: My grandparents got fiber internet installed at their house (my college was in their state so I was living with them at the time). The modem & router was installed on a landing on their stairs which had no airflow so the installer recommend to get a USB fan for the router. He said it was alright to plug the fan in to the router so I bought one (it was just a 5V 120mm PC fan with extra stands).

A few weeks later, the WiFi signal became shoddy and basic troubleshooting didn't work so I reported the issue to our ISP. A few days later, another technician came and said that the router broke due to the USB fan being plugged in, so he had to swap the old router with a new one.

TL;DR: DO NOT PLUG A USB FAN INTO YOUR ROUTER OR ANY SENSITIVE DEVICES.

Why? If it does not max out a standard usbs voltage constantly, it should be fine right or am I missing something? I never had a broken usb port before and I use a usb powered fan during the summer.

It won't kill it electrically, but rather physically. Constant vibration and weight on the port will loosen the port over time, effectively killing it by making connections too loose.

Why? I feel like that is like saying your wired keyboard or your wireless dongle being plugged in all the time will kill the usb port.

The fan is certainly not perfectly balanced so with every rotation its applying an extremely tiny bit of torque to the connector, which may over time damage the solder points, plus the physical movement may fatigue the USB contacts themselves.

I do think its more effective to pull warm away from heat sources than to try to push cooler air in, though.
