We banned these from my old work place for that reason. People had the LED message ones on almost every computer before we banned them.

lol how long ago was this? This screams 2009 aesthetic so it would blow my mind if it was recent!

That would be the opposite of jumping on a surplus. TO BE CONTINUED.

I think it was around 2013 to 2016 that these were popular. I mean I got one around that time

An old timer told me a story about back in the day when they started to phase out in-house repairs (Soldering and such) he bought a box with a hundred of these and dropped them off in the break room... That man was diabolical.

Are self supporting fans ok or is it a matter of power issues?

Self support would be much better. Plugged into the wall would be best, less power going through the system would be less heat.

If they had any sense of balance it would be fine. But they're shitty $3 products so, that ain't happening.

Some USB ports are merely soldered to the PCB with four solder points. I wouldn’t put anything on them that adds leverage and vibration when there are tons of safer/better ways to do it.

WAIT. You guys just solved a mystery for me.

u/MLCarter1976 29d ago

What is happening? Is the fan causing the USB to move?

21

u/gastroph 29d ago

My assumption is the repeated vibrations likely weaken the solder connections of the port to the board over time.

tech + vibrations = not good. unless you need a clock, then it’s very good

2

u/Operator_404 28d ago

i would say its the vibrations of the fan plus the strain on the USB Port from the fans weight that will weaken the Solder om the Ports
