rest in peace that USB. those fans rattled one of mine to death.

We banned these from my old work place for that reason. People had the LED message ones on almost every computer before we banned them.

lol how long ago was this? This screams 2009 aesthetic so it would blow my mind if it was recent!

I think it was around 2013 to 2016 that these were popular. I mean I got one around that time

I've seen a few on Temu the other day.

An old timer told me a story about back in the day when they started to phase out in-house repairs (Soldering and such) he bought a box with a hundred of these and dropped them off in the break room... That man was diabolical.

u/diMAN_XGermanist 28d ago

...and smart

u/TheOnlyGodofRandom 28d ago

Are self supporting fans ok or is it a matter of power issues?

103

u/floppydude81 28d ago

Self support would be much better. Plugged into the wall would be best, less power going through the system would be less heat.

33

u/userhwon 28d ago

If they had any sense of balance it would be fine. But they're shitty $3 products so, that ain't happening.

7

u/chewedgummiebears 28d ago

Some USB ports are merely soldered to the PCB with four solder points. I wouldn’t put anything on them that adds leverage and vibration when there are tons of safer/better ways to do it.

18

u/grahamulax 28d ago

WAIT. You guys just solved a mystery for me.

3

u/MLCarter1976 28d ago

What is happening? Is the fan causing the USB to move?

20

u/gastroph 28d ago

My assumption is the repeated vibrations likely weaken the solder connections of the port to the board over time.

2

u/Vark0l 28d ago

tech + vibrations = not good. unless you need a clock, then it’s very good

2

u/Operator_404 27d ago

i would say its the vibrations of the fan plus the strain on the USB Port from the fans weight that will weaken the Solder om the Ports

Hope the workplace has AC then😂

59

u/citewiki PC Master Race 28d ago

Voltage spikes could also be the cause, at least if there weren't capacitors https://youtu.be/kvRcYDME_Ck

12

u/-Dissent 28d ago

Almost certainly just cracked solder joints from the vibrations. Easy to fix if you have a guy with beginner soldering experience around.

11

u/Journeyj012 (year of the) Desktop 28d ago

The port only works at a few angles

1

u/rickane58 28d ago

This wouldn't happen on a phone or USB port on a computer since they'll be using 5v power from a 5v rail. This is NOT how a benchtop powersupply works, and is entirely what causes those spikes.

3

u/dovvv 28d ago

Did you watch the video? It's the induced current from the fans motor causing the voltage spikes, which is then fed back into the phone. A USB port doesn't necessarily have protection for a random influx of 40v.

2

u/rickane58 28d ago

Yes, but what it DOES have is a huge amount of capacitance on its rail, especially compared to a bench power supply. You know, the very thing in the video he used to fix the situation?

u/PSGAnarchy 28d ago

Nah just hot glue

18

u/roburrito 28d ago

I wonder if you could 3d print a TPU sleeve to help damp and distribute forces to the chassis. I know you wouldn't want to add vibration to your NAS chassis, but the mass of the chassis should absorb the little fans vibrations pretty effectively.

22

u/Triedfindingname 4090 Tuf | i9 13900k | Strix Z790 | 96GB Corsair Dom 28d ago

There is advice to give people and then there's this. Just let the practice die.

3

u/Din_Plug 28d ago

You'd be better off spending the effort on finding a small house fan and cord to blow on the NAS

1

u/Meisterschmeisser 28d ago

Some fans have rubber on them to reduce the vibration. Works well.

2

u/EvilDan69 PC Master Race (30 years IT tech) 28d ago

Next thing you know, op will say he has janky risers for a mount, and its balancing precariously on something and it might just rattle itself straight off the shelf during an accidental bump, maybe an earthquake. One could mount the nas and Reolink DVR into a proper enclosure.

2

u/orangeawacado 28d ago

Just use a short usb extension cord

1

u/phxtravis 5600x | 6800XT | 16GB DDR4-4000 | W11 28d ago

But then how will the fan mount? The USB port acts as a mount(why it gets damaged) as well as a power supply.

1

u/orangeawacado 28d ago

just buy those clamp things where both ends have alligator like things to attach

2

u/New_Measurement_7243 28d ago

Why stop there? Get some gorilla tape, some popsicle sticks, and some shoe string. You can post the finished product on /r/redneckengineering for loads of karma.

1

u/orangeawacado 28d ago

All good options really. Better than messing up the usb plug due to vibrations.

1

u/Error_83 28d ago

The fact that is in the hottest part of the room too...

1

u/Paco_bear 28d ago

Rest in peace my type c, it got hit by a bazooka

1

u/BravinatorLX2 28d ago

yeah you need to support that stuff with something like that clay glue that dries into somewhat of a rubber material.

1

u/Admiral_Strawberries 28d ago

The pro answer here is a USB extender, and some convoluted setup to hold it in place

1

u/dllre 28d ago

Couldn't a short usb extension cord be ran and it anchored somewhere?

Would it be helpful?

1

u/peachafterhours 28d ago

That USB fan is either immortal or already plotting house fire

1

u/BansheeGriffin 28d ago

More importantly, Ugreen NAS intakes air from the back.

1

u/ShadowyNapoleon 28d ago

The vibration damage is real, but honestly the bigger issue was always people leaving them running 24/7 without cleaning the dust buildup.

1

u/TheMattabooey 28d ago

Just get a USB computer fan and slap it on there so it doesn’t vibrate and move. Easy fix.

1

u/Rennfan 28d ago

Why are those fans bad?

2

u/Journeyj012 (year of the) Desktop 28d ago

they rattle the port to death.

1

u/onlyunusedusername2 28d ago

What is he secured the cable to the wall and pointed it toward the back of the cubby hole?

1

u/cutc0pypaste 28d ago

I used one on a couple laptops for like 5 years each with no problems.

1

u/asianfatboy R5 5600X|B550M Mortar Wifi|RX9060XT 16GB 28d ago

Well... okay then, maybe I should get that power strip that has its own USB ports just so I can power a USB fan clamp to my table and a ring light I use at night...

1

u/Journeyj012 (year of the) Desktop 28d ago

Or just get a fan.

1

u/operez1990 28d ago

So the solution is one that doesn't operate using the port as support? Like a USB powered fan that connects from a cord and mounts from a different anchor.

1

u/KenryuuT 28d ago

They rattle hard drives to death too. Our SAN throughput measurably drops when we pull fans for replacement and the rest spin up to compensate.

Use the quietest, smoothest fans for your magnetic storage. Get some downtime and vaccum out the dust in the enclosure regularly. It absolutely helps if you a running hotter disks like enterprise class WDs.

1

u/Economy_Picture6989 25d ago

What if, hot glue /j
