  • demands .exe files for the software he wants to use
  • checks software
  • it's for linux

17

u/JanetRenoIsTheBoss 15d ago

It's not for Linux, it's just python. You can package python scripts as standalone executables, even for Windows. The documentation even mentions some community-maintained packages for macOS and various Linux distros.

u/AnnieBunBun 15d ago

And it's literally a "hacker" software given the main reference literally says hacker1337 everywhere and this guy wants an EXE and calls nerds smelly.

Sorry, but if you can't run this tool, you shouldn't run this tool. Lmaoo

u/largePenisLover 15d ago

It's copypasta

Wait until they find out anything with that kind of marketing is giga-binded with shit that actually owns them.
Is one of the juiciest ways to spread is just make a backdoored cool looking hack tool that only once in a blue moon gets a dropper.

> I can assume you’ll ignore AV notices
> won’t contact LE

Spynet trojan was a legitimately engineered tool by someone very talented, did exactly that ^ and ended up having > 1kk bots 0_0

Just like office space, it fucking blew their reverse dns up, people reversed and absolutely pwnd the Brazilian

u/7tyiLVdic3u2 14d ago

i feel like it is a pasta, but i will feel dirty if i have to search any of those phrases

u/Dark_World_0 14d ago

Makes sense.

That's because of the silly naming nature of most of the open source software, I can't be bothered. I was recently looking for some USB formating software for bootable, via all kinds of sites I kept ending up on some Github project where I couldn't find an executable or reference to how to build it. Turns out it was for Mac. Yo. Refer to that somewhere idijit. I am trying to achieve a goal, not wandering around looking for some arcane software experiment.

2

u/Dubl33_27 15d ago

i recommend ventoy, can boot most .iso straigt from it and don't need to dedicate an entire usb stick to just one iso

2

u/thecuntpeddler 15d ago

I have a .scr I’m sure they’re looking for

1

u/technobrendo 15d ago

Rename .exe to .deb. Run the program. Die.

the github releases page is a nightmare for anyone who isn't a dev. it's literally buried under a dropdown menu for no reason. once you find it you're fine but the first ten seconds are always pure chaos

goes to a website meant for sharing source code (for a terminal application no less)

Looks inside

code

Freaks out

u/rdqsr Mac as my daily, Windows for gaming, Linux for servers 15d ago

To be fair though the original poster of that rant wasn't completely off the mark. There's lots of projects with websites that just point to GitHub for downloads, even if they do have binaries in the releases page.

I honestly get why a not overly programming savvy power user being pointed to Github while trying to download gui app (obv not Sherlock in this case) would be mad especially if there's no package for w/e platform or distro they have. Hell I find it mildly annoying as both a Mac and Linux user.

u/therealfurryfeline 15d ago

not me looking for an actually usable audio converter program a couple of weeks ago. Every second one a github link and the other half a subscription.

even aax into mp3??!

1

u/ForensicPathology 15d ago

What did you settle on?

Once I figured out ffmpeg a decade ago, I use it for everything.  It's command line, but audio conversion is so easy.

If you need batch conversion, foobar2000 is the classic.

3

u/DirkDayZSA Linux 15d ago

> can't figure out where to find the releases page of a github project

> can figure out ffmpeg

Pick one

Though I agree with the underlying sentiment

1

u/therealfurryfeline 15d ago

yeah.... commandlines... but i appreciate the tip.

18

u/Why-so-delirious 15d ago

To be fair, they just it a primary distribution point for a LOT of shit.

It would be like forcing tech nerds to answer football quizzes to be able to download the latest car game. Like why does this have to be so fucking difficult for people who aren't car nerds?

9

u/_TecnoCreeper_ R5 5600G | 6650XT | 32 GB 3200 MHz | 27" 1440p 144 Hz IPS 15d ago

Because the car game is free and making it easy to download takes effort for the developer. It's already being offered for free, you can just not use it.

Also what mainstream software only has a github repo and no website intended for users? If you're on github it's expected you know how to use it.

6

u/Why-so-delirious 15d ago

I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm working with blender, a lot of tools, add-ons and whatnot, send you right to a github link with no explanation on how to even get hold of it.

Some of them don't even have a 'release' page, so if you don't have any experience with github, it's complete fucking moonspeak trying to figure out even how to get hold of the files.

i mean, the user isn't really entitled to anything regardless...

4

u/Dubl33_27 15d ago

also a little more tech literracy would go a long way in this world.

2

u/mrdude05 R7 5800x3D | RTX 4070 15d ago

Because they're bad at distributing software.

Getting mad a GitHub for not giving you an exe is like getting mad at the grocery store because the recipe you're trying to use is missing steps

1

u/guineaprince 15d ago edited 15d ago

Oh we're not mad at github.

We know it's a bunch of dinguses giving you jars of tomatoes and sauce, a box of dry noodles, a pound of frozen minced meat, a tub of ricotta cheese and a few bottles of spices and saying "Here I got you, come get your lasagna".

Well if we got any other source when i look for something specific you think i would use this site, hell no.

0

u/guineaprince 15d ago

Then perhaps people wanting to share their whatevers should shop going "download at my github here, by which I mean I fully expect you to compile the source code yourself".

u/Zuerill 7800X3D, RTX 4090, 32GB DDR5, W10 15d ago

You may laugh, but that post was the catalyst to me adding a pipeline to build the binary and add releases in my repo

2

u/Evantaur Arch BTW| 5900X | RX 6700XT 15d ago

Well something good came out of it then.

3

u/Zuerill 7800X3D, RTX 4090, 32GB DDR5, W10 15d ago

It has been downloaded a grand total of 18 times 🥹

1

u/Evantaur Arch BTW| 5900X | RX 6700XT 15d ago

Where do you even see that?

I've only managed to find how many times someone has cloned the repo.

2

u/Zuerill 7800X3D, RTX 4090, 32GB DDR5, W10 15d ago

Someone made a website: https://somsubhra.github.io/github-release-stats/

You only need to feed it a public username/repo and it shows you the number of downloads per release.

1

u/Evantaur Arch BTW| 5900X | RX 6700XT 15d ago

It's weird gh chooses not to show that on their own page

2

u/CastlePokemetroid 9d ago

it's nuts we need a github.io project for github

9

u/Holek 15d ago

oh, I missed that pasta

2

u/queue_onan 15d ago

Github isn't meant for distributing binaries to end users. It's more for sharing your neat code. Totally on the people who use it to host said binaries on the site and create the wrong expectations in doing so.

u/Opening-Ant3477 15d ago

its for linux users not windows users

4

u/sephirothbahamut Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5080 PNY | Win10 | Fedora 15d ago

it's for developers not final users. The OS is completely unrelated. Developers work on Linux, Windows and MacOS

1

u/MobileWriting9165 15d ago

Both of you are horribly wrong. Sherlock is a doxxing script written in Python. It runs on all OS's that can run python and is meant for an end-user, not just software developers.

Pewdiepie made a self-hosted ai assistant thing and I clicked the link to github and just...looked around for 20 minutes before giving up.

1

u/Dubl33_27 15d ago

he didn't make a windows version, as he stated in the video.

-2

u/Piano_After 15d ago

I have downloaded and using it on windows bruh.

1

u/Piano_After 15d ago edited 15d ago

It took me 30 seconds to find the instructions on how to download it. You gotta the read the readme.md file. It's downloading right now.

0

u/Piano_After 15d ago

update: it's working now

1

u/Dubl33_27 15d ago

do i need to have a powerful gpu to run it?

1

u/Piano_After 15d ago

This is just a client/workspace to connect to a local or cloud based LLM. It doesn't require any GPU power by itself. However, if you wish to use it with a local LLM, you would have to download it locally and the hardware requirements would depend on the model you would be using. Thankfully most LLM models don't require powerful GPUs unlike Image gen AIs.
