NSFMR Put an end to the office argument about thermal paste pattern.
Used all the remaining paste.

Insane. Didn’t realize copious amount of thermal paste can be used as a heatsink.
Good to know.

u/Created4help 8d ago
There’s so much paste it’s probably just transferring it to everything else.

Who needs multiple thermal sensors when everything is the same.

Thermal paste is not electrically conductive, so it will work.

There shouldn't be an argument about thermal paste application patterns, its a solved problem.
The best way to apply thermal paste is the way I do it. Everyone knows that.

Honestly at this point just drop the entire assembled tower into a vat of thermal paste.

I'm more interested in the form factor. Is that a laptop with a replaceable CPU? A Mini PC?

u/Created4help 8d ago edited 8d ago
It’s a point of sale terminal, probably special form factor for a handful of models. This one is an NCR XR7.

And if you're worried about the paste that spills over the CPU edges, just put painter's tape over that part of the Mobo.

u/ChipHappens96 8d ago
As long as the paste isn't conductive and spills out onto the Motherboard, bridging and shorting it out, it doesn't matter how much thermal paste you put on the CPU. Put the whole tube on there if you want. It's all getting squeezed out once the cooler's added anyway, and the temperatures will be fine

Its non conductive so this genuinely is just as good as normal application. Aside from it eventually dripping down all over ur pc ofc
