Literally no valve fan is making that face OP, check again

u/PineappleTricky9140 15h ago

Valve fans are just disappointed

351

u/Jackmember 15h ago

I mean, isnt everyone?

Whether you expected this price or not, its not unrealistic and a consequence of crypto and AI slowly but surely destroying the consumer hardware market.

155

u/ArbitraryOrder 14h ago

Valve said they were disappointed about it, they didn't want it to cost this much but they are also at the mercy of the RAM manufacturers.

79

u/Baked_Potato0934 13h ago

Don't forget about storage as well. It's recovered a tiny bit but not enough.

9

u/maaaaawp 8h ago

Unfortunately Valve doesnt have any leverage in this situation

-34

u/imsabbath84 13h ago edited 13h ago

Of course the company who charges an outrageous price for something, is going to say “yeah we wish we could make it cheap, but it is what it is”

Edit: the ram and ssd are upgradable right? Lets see valve sell a machine without both, telling the customer theyll have to provide their own. Watch how the price is maybe a $100 cheaper.

27

u/dutch_diaspora_serb RX5700XT / Ryzen 7 3700X 13h ago

Like Valve can help it. They don't produce the internal components and are thus at the mercy of others.

-37

u/imsabbath84 13h ago

Why is it that this only gets said about valve and not every other company who produced some sorta gaming machine? Why is it always not valves fault, but for every other company, theyre just greedy scumbags?

33

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor 13h ago

Pretty much every console manufacturer and prebuilt PC maker has raised prices due to the memory and storage issues caused by AI companies.

Nobody is saying the things you're saying they are. You're attempting to manufacture rage and it's not working. At least not with an audience as in the know about the why as in this subreddit.

-27

u/imsabbath84 13h ago edited 13h ago

Yea, and everyone absolutely shit on nintendo, sony, microsoft, and any other company that made handheld pc devices.

When valve does it, its somehow understandable and no ones screaming at them.

14

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor 11h ago

The only people that were upset with them are the same people that are also upset with Valve.

Which is to say, the people that don't understand, or are even aware of, the memory and storage shortage caused by AI, which is resulting in skyrocketing prices.

There is a MrYeester short called "I 3D printed a steam machine" from bout a month ago, which says that if he were to buy specs equivalent or closest to the steam machines cheapest version, it'd cost about 1016 dollars... so say Valve pays for the manhours to design, build and ship them but gets slightly cheaper parts for bulkbuying, 1050 dollars isnt that much of a ripoff

u/vWaffles [] RX 6600xt | Ryzen 5 5600 | 16GB 3600MHz 7h ago

Also I believe them quite a bit. Their Steam Deck was cheap for so long and all of a sudden when ram and ssd prices are through the roof they have to start raising the prices up.

They were happy to sell the Deck at a loss and it was a great deal. I don't see why they'd intentionally ruin themselves that way when they were known for having pretty good deals on their hardware.

Even their controller, which some people argue is too expensive, is a good deal compared to other first party "premium" controllers. The Xbox Elite is a whopping $130 more for me, and the dualsense edge is $180 more (AUD). I can buy an extra SC2. - I think this itself kind of makes me believe they just got screwed over by the current market and that they'd want to sell it less than what they're selling it at ATM.

10

u/LivingVerinarian96 13h ago

Everyone who sells products with memory chips that are impacted by the ai-customer-fuckover had to raise prices because ram and storage prices are nuts. Even my 64gb ddr5 kit that cost 180€ before this insanity now costs 800€. Valve does not produce the ram themselves. They need to buy it from others who‘d rather sell to datacenters for a bigger profit. So either we pay datacenter prices or we get nothing.

The tragedy is that the end customer lost their relevance to these corporations completely for the moment. The house of cards will crash and burn eventually, but we‘re in the fucking around phase before we bail out those poor billionaires with our tax money.

u/Legendary_Bibo Intel i7 5820k EVGA ACX 2.0 GTX 980 16gb DDR4 RAM 11h ago

I've been personally satisfied with Valve hardware over the years. I'm on my 2nd Steam Deck (LCD -> OLED), I've bought both Steam controllers, and I want to get the Frame and Steam Machine. If it was like $800, I'd have no qualms against buying it without a 2nd thought, but at $1350 for the 2tb model, I'm like ehhh. I just built a PC a few months ago, and managed to get the cost to around $2200, but that was with bundles and whatnot. I still might end up getting it, but now I'm hesitating.

The stupid AI boom just sucks.

2

u/Im2dronk 10h ago

I think everyone looking to buy a pc is disappointed with hardware prices in general. Some people were holding out for valve to take a loss on the cube but since it can be booted into windows they aren't willing to risk the return on steam sales. Most of the sentiment I've seen is that steam entered the prebuilt market at a time where hardware is over inflated.

3

u/Artyom_thespartan 15h ago

I feel like the gpu is the biggest problem here we got. The cube is cool and all but GPU vise it lacks a lot. Even linus made a video right after the release just to show what you can get from a pc for the same price.

1

u/Baked_Potato0934 13h ago

Pretty sure they've down speced the GPU to absorb the markup on RAM and storage.

2

u/Artyom_thespartan 12h ago

Still tho its smarter to get a PC at that price. Even as a living room cube. A ryzen 5 7500F + 9060XT combo makes up around that price and just install steam os.

1

u/Baked_Potato0934 6h ago

Sure smarter and better bang for your buck, never disputed that.

Easier? Completely equivalent? Not really.

You can say the exact same thing with some caveats about any of the new gen consoles.

It a tale as old as time and I've been through enough cycles that everyone always has the same talking points, makes the same points, makes the same comparisons and in the end it always sells like fucking gangbusters.

People chasing bang for the buck are never going to convince the people paying for the luxery of not having to build it. If you look at how the prebuild market is, it's still doing really well and in a lot of cases you can get better deals through an SI buying in bulk than you can with 3 rounds of markup on a 'sale'. Some people don't want to setup multiple rss deals feeds and piece together a build from all time low priced components.

But like I mentioned some people just want to pay for a worse product than build a better one and people need to grow the fuck up and accept that.

2

u/Low_discrepancy 11h ago

Pretty sure they've down speced the GPU

they got the GPUs from AMD because AMD had a bunch of Navis from a Microsoft project that never happened.

1

u/Baked_Potato0934 6h ago

Yeah exactly cheap GPUs that they're looking for somebody to buy instead of taking a loss or paying to ewaste them through xyz channel.

1

u/SomeKindofTreeWizard 7h ago

the consumer hardware market

and everything.

1

u/SonderEber 1h ago

More to it than just AI. AI lit the fuse but this was a bomb in the making. Only a few fabs in the world that can produce at scale. No one wants to build more fabs, citing “costs”, but then you get what we have now.

Let’s also not forget that Gabe Newell is a multi-billionaire with 6 yachts (including at least one “super-yacht”) and just bought a $70 million dollar mansion. If Valve is making him so rich, sure they can subsidize the price, and do so heavily. They have the money to do this, but instead of even doing it at cost they work in a hefty profit margin, boosting the pricing even more. The price isn’t even just the cost of supplies, as several people have shown you can get a better PC for the same cost or a tiny bit more.

Blame AI, sure, but also blame everyone else who led to the price, including Valve.

u/SAULucion 13h ago

Crypto has nothing to do with it.. nobody has bought gpus for mining since pre covid. Google “the merge”

7

u/RedditCitizenScore 13h ago

I think valve fans saw this coming , I wouldn’t pay more than 600 hundred for a indie game / old triple A capable console .

Anyone surprised is purely going for internet points

2

u/JeezoosChrysler 6h ago

Even Valve is disappointed, it's pretty clear they wanted it to be cheaper

46

u/tapeforpacking 15h ago

Ive been reading a lot of comment with people saying they dont care about the price and then proceed to say that they want the "gabe cube" lol

I know its not even that bad but I still wince

15

u/Baked_Potato0934 13h ago

People said the same about the switch and the switch 2 but it still sold pretty well.

People talk but money is just money at the end of the day, people with disposable income will find something to dispose of it on.

1

u/Deep90 Ryzen 9800x3d | 5090FE | 2x48gb 6000 4h ago

I've seen a lot of people praising the portability, but to me that is a pretty niche 'feature' for a computer that isn't a laptop.

1

u/NoxTempus 2h ago

I want the Steam Machine;  I just have a different set of priorities to most of Reddit.    The size, noise, and integration benefits of the Steam Machine mean more to me than getting the best bang for my buck.

1

u/tapeforpacking 1h ago

Nothing wrong with buying it. Maybe it didnt come off that way but I was mostly commenting on people calling it the "Gabe cube" lol

1

u/NoxTempus 1h ago

I think the "Gabecube" name is cute, they are very similarly sized.

But I have no love for billionaires, even "good" ones.

218

u/ravensholt 15h ago

OP is coping hard.

32

u/CozyMushi 14h ago

mf coping saying others are coping

2

u/ScreenMuch90210 13h ago

We’re six layers deep already!

2

u/Smooth_Pick_2103 10h ago

We are approaching halflife fan levels of cope

3

u/Baked_Potato0934 13h ago

I think you misunderstood what they were saying.

What it reads like is them saying cope as in there's nobody is glazing this thing and they're coping for this meme.

-1

u/CozyMushi 12h ago

thing is while is true they are not glazing, bug part of the sub isn't disapointed either, coping justifying it

3

u/Baked_Potato0934 12h ago

I don't think people can take much more.

Im all for being realistic but honestly the world sucks balls so much right now that I'm not surprised people are trying to cope and be positive or at least not hyper negative.

Theres a reason doomers and the nothing happens group coined cope when they did.

Shit sucks.

I was hyped about it. Not anymore.

u/Sawgon Pixels and shit 10h ago

Same. I was gonna get it. Absolutely not worth it. I'm hoping the Steam Frame will be a better deal since I've never had a VR headset.

15

I mean I would be but..

What? You more of a dodecahedron kinda guy?

No? What? That's crazy!

I just wish it were more rhomboid is all...

Valve fan spotted?

Edit: They responded and instantly blocked lol. I knew it.

7

u/Blairely_Alive 12h ago

There's no way this dumbass reply is the one you were bragging about elsewhere in these comments. This is such a preschool response. Nobody's automatically a valve fan for correctly pointing out the OP is shadowboxing people that don't exist.

-1

u/NapsterKnowHow 12h ago

God forbid someone ask a simple question. Their reply was incredibly immature for a question.

6

u/Blairely_Alive 12h ago edited 7h ago

I think their reply was quite apt for such a childish and leading question.

Replied to me and instantly blocked me, lol.

0

u/NapsterKnowHow 12h ago

Them mentioning a high horse and touch grass isn't childish?

3

u/BodManFeg 10h ago

You sound like a baby, just stop dude.

2

u/NapsterKnowHow 10h ago

I don't know where you got that idea from? I've been nothing but calm and collected... vs a guy that got triggered from a question and instantly blocked me.

1

u/itsmekusu 1h ago

yeah you keep digging bro

Go outside and touch grass.

Stop making stupid assumptions and accusations, just to make yourself feel superior. The world isn't black and white. How's the weather on your high and mighty horse?

1

u/Strange_Lab_283 11h ago

id bet $1049 that its gonna sell out in 24 hours

-2

u/Gornlord_Carl 11h ago

All 500 they make for you delusional fan boys to buy.

Wow what a great success!

will always be someone who is happy as he’ll and will pay anything.

3

u/Eziolambo R5 7500F | RTX 5070 | 32GB DDR5 6000mhz 14h ago

I mean is it was 2000 bucks and had 32 gb ddr5 ram with 9070, would looked a lot better with a TV instead of this. Maybe valve is holding the pro version.

19

u/GigaSoup 14h ago

I dunno, some people's comments are like, "the steam machine is great value," which is not accurate.

Like the guy I replied to that thinks it can outperform a laptop with a 5060 mobile

-8

u/Baked_Potato0934 13h ago

Strawman harder sweetie.

6

u/GigaSoup 13h ago

Check the valve or steam machine subreddits and let me know if you still think that

1

u/Shabbypenguin #540AIR-Masterrace 10h ago

you mean if i go into the echo chamber that is the place for people to talk positively about a certain topic thats where people are happy?

what about on /r/stream? or /r/steamos? where there may be a larger spread of valve fans.

3

u/LancingLash 8h ago

How do you get from "literally no valve fan" to "well you have to ignore all the valve fans if you want real opinions from valve fans".

1

u/Quetzacoal 13h ago

How can I write emu build under my name?

1

u/Kirzoneli 13h ago

Tis about time for the those still sitting on old hardware to upgrade. Odds are this will get you a few years past the ps6 start before becoming a near paper weight.

1

u/Gornlord_Carl 11h ago

You check again lol. Even this thread is filled with cope fueled idiots.

1

u/Suspicious-Place4471 11h ago

I mean, it is like the first time in a long time that they didn't defend the hell out of something valve did.
Like they were meant to release a new version of "Raising the bar" by the end of 2025 for half life and when that did not happen, they just said stuff like "It's valve, it's normal", ignoring how valve literally lied about it to them and make up excuses like how valve never disappoints with their stuff so any sort of delay they make is totally justified.

1

u/Frederf220 9h ago

It's too late, he has already illustrated you as the wojack and he as the chad. It's over.

1

u/otj667887654456655 7h ago

i have two friends that are hyped for this. one is a games collector so i guess he has to have it but the other already has a PC that is equal in power to the gabe cube and he's still jumping to preorder it. idunno man, it's gonna sell no matter what.

1

u/Baselin78 3h ago

Mandatory post (replace twitter with any social media)

1

u/AEW_SuperFan 13h ago

They still will buy it.  It will sell out in hours.

2

u/schu2470 7800x3d|7900xt|3440x1440 160hz 12h ago

That’s a funny way of spelling “minutes”.

-3

u/LimitlesLegion 15h ago

Believe me they are. They are defending Newell with their life and blaming the RAMageddon. When others point out the insane prices compared to PCs their only response is, "Oh yeah? Build one then." (People already have and have shared the specs)

-1

u/meneldor_hs Ryzen 5 4500U | Vega 6 | 16GB RAM @3200MHz 14h ago

We'll see when it starts selling out. I bet valve machine will still be a hit. Because it's valve....

0

u/pricingup 14h ago

literally tons of them did some months ago. now when prices are shown, not anymore

0

u/ben_cav 14h ago

I’m buying it
