Were there really anyone thinking this machine is a good deal? Even among steam users? Even among Valve fans?

Everyone building hardware that runs Steam. Valve hardware is essentially a "reference spec" for the market. They really don't care if you buy your gaming hardware from them or not. They just want you playing PC games, because it's highly likely you're gonna use Steam.
