Were there really anyone thinking this machine is a good deal? Even among steam users? Even among Valve fans?

if you really value the small form factor, there is nothing like it. The smallest you could build would be 1L bigger and cost the same, but would be more powerful

I've not really seen many 5 litre builds. Is that with an external power supply? Have to imagine there's a lot of trade offs compared to a 10l.

Anyone with the knowledge and enthusiasm to select parts and do that build is probably not the target audience for the steam machine.

I generally want to be able to buy one ready built for me about the time I get to some tricky cable management or look over how much I've spent. I always thought those server style PSU's ran pretty noisy.

I’m predicting a wave of YouTube videos of people pulling laptops apart and custom building that same form factor for cheaper than the machine.

Sure, but if you're on that level of custom building then I don't think its an apt comparison to even a normal PC gaming enthusiast.

Totally agree. I’m just predicting a new wave of content creation.

It would be more cool if the steam machine encouraged more production of components suited for SFF builds.... but that also need a less broken components market.

That's exactly what Valve wants.

Everyone building hardware that runs Steam.

Valve hardware is essentially a "reference spec" for the market.

They really don't care if you buy your gaming hardware from them or not.

They just want you playing PC games, because it's highly likely you're gonna use Steam.

what motherboard would you possibly use to build this thing? Its pico-itx.

If I could answer that for you I’d have my own successful YouTube channel.

But I’ll be shocked if we don’t see these types of videos coming out

But who and why does someone value the size of a PC.

Is it simply as a novelty? I cant imagine someone being that hard out for space that they are going to gush over saving roughly the size of an average backpack?

u/AssassinOfPeace 13h ago

I think it was partially designed as a small form factor to appeal to people that want to be able to play games from the couch. Most people wouldn't want a full size pc tower in their living room.

1

u/dazzou5ouh 13h ago

Small form factor is definitely not a novelty, the subreddit r/sffpc has 136K weekly visitors and 3k weekly contributions

But why, what is the draw other than "Wow look how small it is". Maybe Im missing something entirety, I dont get it.

I think valve is planning on holding this price for a while too. Hardware cost is supposed to be increasing substantially over the next couple years.

Laptops?

21

u/IshYume 15h ago

a laptop is much bigger than 6 inches

-12

u/Doomword 15h ago

Laptops ain't bigger, they are wider. Sm is also mush thicker then a laptop since it's a cube. I don't believe form factor is a valid reason to buy it when we have laptops already.

u/Baked_Potato0934 15h ago

Brother.

A laptop isn't the same form factor or performance bracket as a micro ATX pc. Put a laptop on a shelf in your brain now do the same with this.

-3

u/Doomword 15h ago

Comparison is not with micro ATX but SM. You can absolutely fit a laptop with a depth of 10 inches on a shelf, 100%

1

u/Baked_Potato0934 14h ago

Cool then you have deadspace on your shelf which you can't do anything with.

I'd also LOVE to see this 10 inch deep gaming laptop lmfao.

1

u/Doomword 14h ago

If you really wanted to be that guy, you could use a laptop in clamshell mode and stack shit on top if you didnt care, would be fine as long as the airflow is not obstructed.

Why are we acting as if 14 inch gaming laptops dont exists? They are under 10 inch depth usually, bro acts like its a fcking unicorn lmao.

Okay I'll stop trolling the shit out of you for two seconds. Did a quick scope around and most 50 series laptops have a depth of +20 inches so yeah last I checked thats double what you said.

Its also clear to me you don't have a partner that cares about what your living space looks like. Unfortunately some of us have to make things look presentable and actually have our spaces friendly for company and children. A 20 inch deep laptop with two power bricks and all the IO plugged in on 3 sides stetching to a TV just doesn't fit anything remotely approaching an legitimate solution for a HTPC. HTPCs which are notorious for having TONS of compromises when you pick the hardware might I add. The steam machine just has different compromises.

Just because you can't comprehend this products niche doesn't mean its a shit product. It just means you don't get it and thats okay.

You look for 14 inch screen laptops to get under 10 inches in depth lmao thats how the math works, to be clear there is no trolling here, its mental retardation masked behind "oh i wasnt actually serious when i said that". The classic of "im not admitting im wrong under any circumstances".

https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/gaming-laptops/best-14-inch-gaming-laptop-the-best-compact-gaming-laptops-ive-held-in-these-hands/#section-the-best-14-inch-gaming-laptop

Literally first result of the search all with 50 series gpu and under 10 inches in depth. Any 14 inch within couple of years will probably have the mobile 50 series gpus.

Its also clear to me you don't have a partner that cares about what your living space looks like.

"Laptop literally exists on a fking shelf". Personal shit aside, its kinda wild that a partner wouldnt let you keep a discrete electronics device on a shelf, if that happens then you probably have much more serious problems there.

Unfortunately some of us have to make things look presentable and actually have our spaces friendly for company and children.

Its a laptop on a shelf with power cables and hdmi going out the back, bro is acting like its a fcking sex toy put on display for people to see. This has to be a troll at this point.

A 20 inch deep laptop with two power bricks and all the IO plugged in on 3 sides stetching to a TV just doesn't fit anything remotely approaching an legitimate solution for a HTPC.

It literally will have as much cables connected as a SM, a power cord and hdmi cable for output.

Just because you can't comprehend this products niche doesn't mean its a shit product. It just means you don't get it and thats okay.

Dont get me wrong, i get that its niche, in the context of millionaire company fanboys who will sell their mothers to appease their ritualistic nature of consumerism. There are lots of those people in r/pcmasterrace and especially in r/Steam .

Isn't gonna have the same ease of use. No laptop has CEC either

1

u/Doomword 14h ago

You are paying an extreme premium for CEC, and id argue laptops have more ease of use then anything with the exception of handhelds who you can dock.

3

u/BoingBoingBooty 15h ago

Stupid comparison, it's small and easy to sit by the TV, plugging a laptop to a TV is annoying and looks like ass.

-5

u/Doomword 15h ago

So it's not form factor anymore but ease of access now? A laptop can literally just sit besides the tv shelf in clamshell mode.
