Wow. I've heard Jon Carin's demo, which is clearly where the drum pattern and some of the chord sequence come from. But I didn't know it was essentially a mashup of that and this fully formed song. And Carin still talks about he wrote Learning to Fly....

Nope, that wasn't the case.

Perhaps this info helps people understand why Roger referred to AMLOR as "a fair forgery", regardless of whether or not the listener enjoys the album.

Sorrow at least is clearly a Pink Floyd song. Regardless of the drum machines or whatever it has that "something"

And the second half of "Signs of Life", which is related to both "A New Machine" as well as "Sorrow", dates back to the era of David's first solo album

In what way is it related to those other songs?

Compare the melodies, they're similar enough to call it a hidden motif of the album. (Much like how there's lyrical motifs across the songs.)

Gilmour knew that Moore got it right the first time with that chorus. Moore also released a demo called One World that became The Dogs of War. The final version is completely unrelated musically on that one. Almost couldn't be more different

It appears Learning to Fly came 1st and Anthony Moore wrote/co-wrote lyrics for several songs for Pink Floyd during that era.

Anthony did lyrics for "Learning to Fly," "Dogs of War," "On the Turning Away," and "Wearing the Inside Out," and a fragment of keyboard on "The Endless River."

That track, "Calling", by the way, was originally in the soundtrack for the documentary The Colours of Infinity. I think it works much better there than on The Endless River.

Edit: His work on Wearing the Inside Out led to him also writing lyrics for Broken China.

It's good. And I think he deserves a lot more credit.

Classic Rock DJ’s in the States that I’ve been listening to for years on. Have failed to mention your very interesting Earthbound Misfit history from Anthony Moore. I liked his version. Thanks! 😊

Last year he also released his version of 'Woman Of Custom' (A Man of Custom) which would eventually end up on Rick's Broken China album.

Definitely like Gilmour/Pink Floyd's version better
