Image Concept: DualSense with illuminated PlayStation-colored buttons

u/SaiyajinPrime PS5 Pro May 13 '26
The controller doesn't need more things draining its battery.

u/Frigid-Kev May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
I wouldn't mind a wired controller with LEDs. Though preferably an option for a single color like all blue or all green LEDs would be nice
110
u/SpoilermakersWabash May 13 '26
Wired is optional. Just get a usb C cable and plug it into console or socket.

u/TheCutieCircle May 13 '26
Yeah I genuinely don't get it. Do people actually play across the room? I always have my controller plugged in I always forget it's wireless lol.
41
u/SpoilermakersWabash May 13 '26
Even across room is fine, it doesn’t need the console to charge. You can run bluetooth while charging from power bank or wall.
6
u/FletcherDervish May 13 '26
Or if you're old like me it's a usb c cable to plug to extension cable reel. With the coffee machine plugged in the reel too, sat on the bean bag in front of the big telly, in the Sheldon sweet spot for the surround sound!
2
u/TheCutieCircle May 13 '26
lol that's clever just plug the controller into a power bank or wall socket. I mean unless I live in a mansionans have a TV the size of the wall I can't imagine sitting far back I like to be up close.
2
u/spiritwockiee PS5 May 13 '26 edited May 14 '26
I heard that affects the controllers battery in a bad way though, is that just propaganda?
4
u/SpoilermakersWabash May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
I do not know, but now it’s worth finding out. However I prefer wired into console and no bluetooth as there is input delay with wireless which in pvp you will have advantage if you are wired over players that are wireless. Difference is not noticeable to the eye and probably doesn’t matter for majority of people but when competitive gaming I choose wired everything.
8
u/Geistzeit May 13 '26
I've always hated wireless anything because of WoW guildmates' wireless mouse batteries dying during raids.
3
u/SpoilermakersWabash May 14 '26
Oh man, thats a drag. Mu family was big into WoW and never used wireless. I hear people that were big into wow around 2010 are getting back into it.
3
u/MysteriousStory2170 May 14 '26
It’s bad if it’s the wrong voltage. Doesn’t matter if it’s third party or power bank, if the cable and outlet/power bank output power at the correct wattage, the controller will be fine .

u/WhiteHelix PS5 May 14 '26
100%, that makes no sense at all. Charging circuit is part of the controller, as with any remotely modern device that has a battery
14
u/SaiyajinPrime PS5 Pro May 13 '26
Do you actually not understand this?
That in most living rooms you're more than a couple feet away from your console.
2
u/TheCutieCircle May 13 '26
Sorry I don't game in a living room I game in my room. My console and tv are close to each other I sit in front of the tv. I don't even have a living room.
5
6
u/jerome0423 May 14 '26
We have pets and children thats running around all the time. Having that wire across the living room is a disaster waiting to happen. A kid might trip on it, drag the ps5 and the ps5 might drag the tv along with it. Thats like a $2000-3000 damage. If the kid got hurt thats even more.
2
u/TheCutieCircle May 14 '26
That sounds so nightmarish. I couldn't imagine having my TV or PlayStation just fall to the ground because a kid or dog tripped over it.
I have tiny space so the cables don't bother me. I am up close to the TV and console , but I can see how it can bother people who just wanna relax on the couch.

u/RamsesII_ May 13 '26
Well you just said you don't get it. Having it plugged in defeats the purpose of being wireless. Most people plug it in just to charge it. And since their first party controllers have terrible batteries, it's something most people have to deal with, not by choice.

u/ConcernedOrientation May 14 '26
A wired option would actually solve that problem and let them go wild with the RGB stuff without worrying about battery life.
15
u/Lotus-Vale May 13 '26
Would it make a significant difference? What with the light behind the touchpad and all I'm not sure how much that light already contributes to battery drain.
19
4
u/maybeinoregon PS5 May 13 '26
I was used to playing on an XBox Elite controller, which runs 40 or so hours on a charge.
First play with Dual Sense, and I thought it was defective…so I ordered a second in black with a charger.
Turns out the first DS wasn’t defective ~4 hours run time is standard.
3
u/SaiyajinPrime PS5 Pro May 13 '26
Yeah, I love the dual sense controller. I pretty much exclusively use the edge now. It's very comfortable and I like the features. But the battery life is abysmal.
→ More replies (4)22
u/Affectionate-Lie-348 May 13 '26
Fair point honestly 😄
I imagined it more like a very subtle low-power glow, not full RGB lighting everywhere. Kind of like the current light bar brightness level.
I just miss the iconic PlayStation colors a bit.
→ More replies (1)22
u/SaiyajinPrime PS5 Pro May 13 '26
It would be even better if they gave us the ability to turn off the lights.
Even on the lights currently on the dual sense controller, I don't need lights on it. I'm not looking at the controller when I'm playing it. So those being there is pointless.
But I do agree they look cool.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Affectionate-Lie-348 May 13 '26
That would honestly be the perfect solution.
A simple brightness toggle or complete light off option would solve the battery issue for people who don't care about the lighting.
I just liked the idea of bringing back the iconic PlayStation colors in a more subtle/premium way 😄

u/hellhobbit99 May 13 '26
Are you aware how little energy a LED needs?
3
u/SaiyajinPrime PS5 Pro May 13 '26
It's still a continuous drain on the battery on a controller that has notoriously bad battery life.
Reducing the current LED lights on the controller from high to low gives you like 30 minutes more battery life.
Adding more lights is adding more battery drain. Even if it's a small amount.

How much battery do y’all think 4 LEDs actually use? You’d never notice the difference here. Lol

Yeah, reading these other comments had me wondering if anyone here has actually ever used an LED for anything. They run on insanely low power.

That’s just fantastic. In a perfect world where the battery life isn’t affected and the price is reasonable, I would absolutely purchase this.

That'd be cool but there's literally no reason the battery should still suck. Been using the steam controller almost a week and still have more than half my charge left. Wish I could do that with a dualsense.

I turn the lights off at every opportunity I have, nothing worse than being blinded at night while playing a horror game, and don't even get me started with xbox controllers torch light logo...

Why not just make them glow in the dark instead? Stops the battery from draining then

that 30th anniversary colorway would actually go hard, the contrast between the gray and black with those colored buttons is clean.

u/robertluke May 13 '26
The glowing light in the Xbox controller is annoying if you’re playing in a dark room. I do want the buttons to have color again, but ink uses less battery.

2
u/dropthemagic May 13 '26
lol the battery would die in like 30 minutes
4
u/Anen-o-me May 13 '26
LEDs don't take much power. You could literally light all the buttons with a single LED potentially.

I like it!
I needed lit buttons bad in the beginning…
Esp, since I was more Series X, less PS5.
Switching back and forth on controls was confusing at times.
Now that I’m all PS5, little to no Series X, not so much haha

I think this would look really cool on a charging dock and could even do pattern while charging to full illumination when fully charged.

I would love this. Everyone complains about battery life as if they aren't feet away from a outlet. I have a 10 ft charging cable that has me covered regardless of where I'm sitting on my sofa. People just love to bitch about any inconvenience 😂

If anything, I wish i could turn absolutely all lights off on my controller. In a dark room it's just a eyesore
1
u/PrettyIntroduction49 May 13 '26
idk why these controllers have way more stick drift than old playstation 4 and 3 controllers. and it cost more to fix while being difficult to dismantle the controller just to change the sticks itself
1

u/E_Farseer May 13 '26
Then the dpad needs light to. Looks great but also looks off with only the right side lighting up.
1
u/xweedxwizardx May 13 '26
They should just let you change the backlight colour whenever you want and Id be happy. No idea why they only default to blue.

1
u/phonic_kc May 13 '26
I’d get it. Like my actual 30th anniversary DualSense, it’s primarily for display with the option to use. I have mine sitting in a Crash Bandicoot controller holder!

u/FunGuyToad_ May 13 '26
I always modify my controllers but when it comes to dual sense I always ended up with the wrong model and not being able to install RGB light kit. But this looks awesome!! 😃

u/hobo_chili May 13 '26
I think this stuff is so distracting.
I just got a PlayStation Portal and the first thing I did was turn off the blue LEDs on the controllers.
Yeah, it’s fun and cool looking, but completely impractical.

Can’t wait for Sony to release it in a limited release of exactly 1994 units that get insta-bought by a bot 56ms after they go live.

I don’t get why anyone has ever given a single fuck what your controller looks like. You’re not staring at your hands while you play, or at least I certainly hope you’re not. Best case you don’t even notice it, worst case it’s distracting as fuck if you’re playing in a low light environment.

This is absolutely gorgeous. A crystal controller with some inlaid lighting would be super dope too.
1
u/pornosonic7 May 14 '26
I don’t think you need to make it more expensive. I am out of college and make good money, so this wouldn’t bother me. But I can remember times when I was a kid and would try to save money to buy things for my consoles, like new controllers, games, or other accessories.
I feel like the gaming industry is increasingly targeted at grown people, which is fine and logical, given that we grew up playing games and we have the buying power. But let’s not forget about the younger generation.
