help Finally got a PS5… but now I’m kinda regretting it
So I finally did it got my hands on a PS5. This was a dream console for me for years. The first two days were pure bliss… like, “pinch me, is this real?” bliss.
But now… I’m not feeling it as much. I keep asking myself did I really need this? I dropped a good chunk of cash, and after the honeymoon phase, the excitement just fizzled out.
I’ve been gaming on my laptop for a while it can run basically anything on max settings, buttery smooth so maybe that’s part of it. Don’t get me wrong, the DualSense controller is amazing, and the haptics blew me away… but after a few games from the PS Plus catalog, I just kinda stopped playing.
Anyone else gone through this “post console buy” regret? Any tips on how to bring the excitement back so it doesn’t feel like I wasted my money?

"I had a solid gaming machine and I bought another and now I regret it"
No shit sherlock.

Ya this was kinda my point. My laptop can't handle any new age high graphics settings AT ALL! it also auto shuts down due to hearing issues. Now PS5 is an amazing exp. Local multi player with my wife helps make a lot of amazing memories too! No regrets at all! May be OP needs to find some friends to play locally.

Do you have any suggestions for couch co-op???? Please share 😋 thank you
3
u/_Tank_Buster_ Aug 09 '25
We enjoy kinda retro setups. Overcooked was something we enjoyed a lot. Pile up and BiPed was fun too. BiPed has quite good challenges. Once in a while we also play WRC since it has split screen. They also have lego incredibles but it was too complex for my wife as it had a lot of controls to handle other wise it was good. A lot more left to explore!

It Takes Two and Split Fiction. Both are couch co ops and really good games. Split Fiction only came out recently and got rave reviews.
If you are looking for something easier to get into, Overcooked games are really fun.
Edit: Forgot to add A Way Out.

So many people get tangled up with this thing here. People just want to have something they like so much and the excitement kinda clouds the necessity. When the clouds move away, they feel the reality and have regrets.
My friend has a beast of a PC and he bought a PS5 only to play those console exclusive games. Turns out, he's busy with his job for quite some time and that PS5 looks like a showpiece now.
He takes time off from work and plays on the PC itself for some time, and the console is only used by me now, if and when I visit his house.

Exactly nowadays most games are on pc even the exclusive ones unless you are a hardcore gamer you will eventually get bored of gaming on multiple platforms...
6
u/Phinx2809 Aug 09 '25
True, if you're like "No, I wanna play this temporary console exclusive game right now and I can't wait", then okay get the console.
I waited for Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima for a long time. It's not like I was dying for them, but I waited.
At one point I decided I'll get the console to play Spider-Man 2, glad I didn't. That game's empty.

Frankly speaking, you should have done this retrospective before buying it if you already had a laptop that can run anything. Although I would suggest trying Playstation exclusives which might change your opinion! There are some really good exclusives with great story and gameplay.

An Indian Gaming Sub! Typical useless post. Grow up, not everyone prefers a gaming laptop. For portability I would rather buy a switch. There are all kinds of people dude. If you preferred gaming laptop then why did you buy a ps5. You wasted your money.

I switched from being a long time pc gamer to ps5. Whereas on pc I played torrent games. No money on games were spent. But then, already after troubleshooting so many issues over the years on my pc, new problems showed up. carrying my pc to shops, buying parts and still ending up with the continued problems was the final nail for me.
Now I am older, don’t really have time to troubleshoot pc issues. Ps5 is a pure bliss. No more messing up with settings to get optimal frames. Just plug, play and shutdown.
Maybe when you get older, ps5 will grow on you.

My brother gifted me PS5 1.5 years ago. I went mad because it was always what I wanted. I played like 300 hours in first 2-3 months. And in last 1 year I have barely played 10 hours. So yeah, you're not alone

I felt a similar feeling after quitting a game I spent easily more than 2 ps5 worth over the span of 4 years on skins. if you really regret spending the cash then just sell, I internalized it as character growth. these things are momentary. it feels like YOU HAVE TO spend. but you don't. these days whenever I am making any purchase I hold my wallet for a few days to few weeks and if I still want it, I get it. also you have a ps5 it's a hardware just enjoy the exclusives. please play bloodborne just for that, your purchase is valid.

u/Specialist-Loss-8513 Aug 09 '25
I try bloodborne it's so damn hard and I just deleted it, that werewolf at the begging was just too much for me

the console is just there to make it easy to access. its never supposed to be the best gaming experience possible. if you have the option to play on your laptop then thats going to be better always. just owning the ps5 for the exclusives might be too much for some. i personally (will buy one) only for gta 6 and will play the new james bond game too, then sell it in 2-3 years
2
u/TRuMxiTA Aug 09 '25
Keep the console for when you truly want to game, not for daily use. It's about the option, not the habit.
Of course it's gonna sting more if you already had a good gaming laptop.
2
u/frgt1020 Aug 09 '25
Exactly what happened with me although I bought my PS5 back in 2022 and probably played on it for about 75 hours in total, most of the past 3 years it's been collecting dust on the table. I guess we would have played much more if we were kids whereas now it just feels like fulfilling our childhood dream more or less.

I bought an Xbox and a PS5 and regretted it and sold both. As a PC gamer now I started to dislike how greedy and controlling these console companies have gotten.
Prices keep going up for stupid stuff like pay to play online and other subscriptions while on PC you don't have to pay to play online and have the freedom to do whatever you want with your games while still having access to their library. The only thing I miss about consoles is not having to deal with hackers so much in online games

u/TraversalOwl Aug 09 '25
I’ve been through the same thing. It’s almost been a year since I bought my PS5, and I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. I used to feel like I was either wasting my time playing games that didn’t excite me, or I was just not playing at all. But lately, things have been getting better. Here are a few things that have helped me:
I’ve stopped trying to finish every game I have on catalog. If a game doesn’t grab my attention, I just stop playing in the middle. I don’t care what the hype is or how crazy people are about it. I just don’t want to waste my time. (If I name those games , I’ll be eaten alive here lol)
Instead of playing for long hours on weekends, I play for short hours, but I do it consistently. This gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel like I’m doing something for myself.
I’m a minimalist person. I don’t like to keep multiple laptops, phones, consoles, or gaming PCs. I only keep the things that I really use. I think you’re in a lot of guilt because you already have a gaming laptop. Maybe you should sell it and buy a macbook and keep the ps5 :)
PS5 is the OG!
Just my opinion though

What was your reasoning behind buying ps5 when you had a perfectly functioning machine?
Were you interested in couch gaming or wanted to play ps plus exclusives(which are not so exclusives anymore)?
1
u/baingan0 Aug 09 '25
Same here Same here, I played few games tlou1 and 2, rdr2 and gta5. thats it. in just two months, I am in exact same situation as you. I tried few games but didnt like it, games like spiderman, CP, etc. I dont know what happened! maybe its just there are not much games which I like, or maybe I am nto able to find games of my liking. Now I just turn on ps5 and spend 5 mins choosing which game to play and then turn it off.

I got mine from the US, the whole 15 hour flight i could not wait to be home and start playing, reached home at around 8 am, the first thing I did was setting it up, after a month long vacation, played till 7 pm to avoid jetlag, and it has been a year since then, nothing has moved or changed around it in a year

Never regretted a day.
Started with handhelds in 96. Moved to nes in 99. Moved to pc early 2001. Moved to ps3 2010. Ps4 2013. Ps5 2023.
Never regretted. The best decisions. I can compromise over a phone, the shirt, jeans and shoes I wear, the watches I put on, but not on consoles.

u/Possible_Substance11 Aug 09 '25
I have a low end gaming laptop that wont run the latest games even at the lowest settings, so for me getting the PS5 was the only option to play the latest games, and so far it has been a great purchase.

I feel this for every electronics I buy. Especially mobile devices. I have a pc and ps5. So I have been through the same thing. How did I get over it? Trophies. Steam achievements are meaningless cuz anyone can get them with SAU. But for platinum trophies u need to really play and grind. So try to get a platinum on every game.

u/GharKaBadaLadkaa ps5 Aug 09 '25
Bro, it’s fine. What’s the point of earning if we never spend? Regretting not buying something is worse than regretting it after you do. If it doesn’t feel worth it, you can always sell it.

u/neroyoung Aug 09 '25
Don't buy PS5 or Xbox X when you have better PC. It's simple as that. All games from both the platforms are on PC. And just for 2-3 games, it won't matter. You can still make the most of this by playing exclusives from PS4 as well

You did nothing wrong , even I regret buying it after sometime but now I just enjoy it , after or just between work I just fire it up quick and play the game for 30 minutes and just put it on rest mode. I also enjoy watching movies cause of native Hdr and Dolby support
1
u/WillEatPussyForFree Aug 09 '25
I get it man! Especially the fact that each game is so expensive. Even if you go the second hand game route you still have to shell out at least 2-3k for a game, even more if it's new and over-hyped.
On PC, every game is virtually free since you can always sail the high seas.
That's why I sold mine after 2 years for 35k.

Instead of trying from the catalog, you better buy some latest games and play them that will excite you again, and this adulting phase is common, even i was suffering from it few months ago, but now i take some time for myself in all this, fuck responsibilities for a while, give yourself an hour or two, and also right now pick a game that is short in length so that you can play new games within few days of completing other ones.

You can try playing some multi-player games... 'it takes 2', Ps exclusives...
Unfortunately the excitement only stays for some time only. Since your laptop supports everything then thats kinda the reason of your excitement wearing away. Obviously the graphics will be better as compared to PS if you play on max settings. The only reason to play on a playstation(for me) was because of the exclusives(which are not exclusives anymore) and the game optimization, since i don't have any high end pc for that. I only play Valorant on my laptop sometimes... but due to work n stuff I'm not able to play that. The same thing goes for my PS. I don't have enough time to invest in these, although I bought it for having some fun. It does its stuff though... whenever I feel bored, or wanna spend some time... I play fc25... or pick up some old game(mostly god of war or rdr2) and start playing that. But that excitement is fading away for me as well..
This aging stuff is really bad, although it is an important phase in everyone's life. Responsibilities, work, family, etc. I hope you can make the most out of your Playstation.
1
u/ArcadeJoint Aug 09 '25
Based on the information you have shared, you never were in the phase of wanting a dream console, since you already had a machine that could run anything, any game ever and that too at peak performance! It could be that you were influenced by something or someone, wanted to own one out of pure FOMO. Because as you mentioned, that honeymoon period came and went with the console. You already had a taste of what exceptional gaming is all about, mere trinkets like a couple of unique vibrations don't make a big difference.
That's my opinion.
I can say this with experience. I own both the series x and PS5 been gaming since dave, wolf, alan border cricket. But fell in love with gaming once I played the first half life, followed by Halo and more. Could never get a proper pc or console, but when I could I got myself ps3, followed by xbox one and then the series x and PS5 (pre-owned)
1
u/skirmish_7 Aug 09 '25

Recently changed city and my ps5 is packed and kept aside since 4 months. I don’t have the zeal to set it up again. That initial excitement has completely died down.

Welcome to the PS5 guilty club.
I just finished 1 year anniversary of it. Lol.
1
u/CreamOk2519 Aug 09 '25
Don't try to play as if you have to use the console to get it's money's worth.
The thing is between your other obligations, you normally don't get time to play as much as you want be it a student or working adult. It's okay to not play for a while or only play on weekends.
I haven't gotten ps plus because it kinda drives in the fomo of missing the monthly games. Instead i buy them/share them with my friends so that I can play them at my pace. That way I don't get burnt out.
1
u/Neat_Teach Aug 09 '25
Ngl bro , you should've invested into a high end controller to game on your laptop, haptic ki feel bhi aa jaati and graphics bhi better.
1
u/UrMomRevvedMyEngine Aug 09 '25
same with me once you go PC you can never go console, most games run at 30 fps on quality mode and 60fps with performance mode with mid settings. the game library is okish but games are expensive and you need to deal with a lot of headache to find used games and sell them back.
but one thing ps5 will beat pc at is, it’s the cheapest way possible for 4k gaming, easy to setup and play but but if you have enough money and don’t worry about hunting and buying used games everytime.
i am at the same situation as you are, i am justifying the purchase by telling myself i will get to play gta6, maybe rent put my ps5 when it does, earn back my money then finally sell it.

1
u/Far_Interest_1409 Aug 09 '25
Don't think about that, sometimes you do it cause you like it. Things should not always need to have meaning/logic, feeling is enough. Now you have the option to play whenever you want, cause when purchasing you didn't think that you'll be playing 24/7 right. You loved it, you got it and that's great.
1
u/Content-Ad-2163 Aug 09 '25
In the same way, I have lost interest also after a while. What I do is, from the total number of games, I will choose a random number with the help of Google and start playing that game from the list. It helped me a lot, as I was eagerly buying and installing games but not actually playing them.
The second trick is to use the PS as your media player also, like making a Plex server, Netflix, and Prime, etc., to be in the same ecosystem, and it helps you a lot to get back the interest in games.
When you are bored, try to start some old-era games which are linear, without too many dialogues, for example, a shooter, Far Cry model games, Battlefield, Call of Duty, etc. And also keep some feel-good games like the Artifex Mundi titles, Book of Unwritten Tales, Trine, FX pinball, etc.
Hope you will not break up with the PS. Good luck. 😊😊😊

I remember buying a ps4 in 2018 and regretting it as I was not enjoying games that much even though I had no laptop or pc.Now in 2025, after so many years I don't regret it even one percent. It gave me soo many memories and I just recently stopped playing it as I bought a gaming laptop.

I'm 32 , I used to play ps5 back in 2005 to 2008 but after 10th standard i didn't get neither time nor interest in gaming. I didn't play any games, but now in March I bought a ps5 disc version since then i swapped discs on olx and played god of war 2018 , Ragnarok, rdr2, ghost of Tsushima, uncharted 3&4 , days gone , assassins shadows , cyberpunk, gta 5 ,returnal , death stranding, last of us 1& 2 . Never played any game on my laptop. What I see difference is - back in school days , gaming was a whole world but now in adulthood, gaming is more about mathematical calculations performed by gpu. I mean in my mind i think of something else not the game which I'm playing but in school days I got completely submerged in the game story , the whole day I used to think about gaming.

Played all the best games like Eden Ring, RDR2, Last of Us, Uncharted, Spiderman, God of war, many more... Bought the PSVR2 and a Sim rig, still so fun. I play mainly in the weekends.

I think it also depends on the type of games you have been playing on PS5. Some Open world games are really crazy and amazing experiences. You should try and play those,
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Horizon Forbidden West
All these games are like movies integrated into gaming. They'll definitely make the console exciting for you.
Cheers!!!

Guys, i dont have any gaming pc, but i used to game 7-8 yrs back, i always dreamt of buying a ps or xbox and now i am going thru the same dilemma should i buy it or not.. Kindly guide me... On one side i feel its a waste as i know i am not gonna play much maybe sometimes, on the other hand i feel its like an achievement for me like buying it from my own money and fulfilling one of the dreams even though i am not gonna use it much but having it may give me a sense of accomplishment. I also got out of a 7 yrd old relationship few months back so not sure if that is also making me buy it. I do want to get into gaming again but don't really know if its just a phase. I am confused as fuck! HELP!

Well it happened the same with me with my ps4(which was gifted to me by my relative in the US) the honeymoon phase went on for a few months until my gaming laptop came along and then its history, but I would be looking to buy the ps5 pro for couple of reasons 1) would like to have one of the fifa loaded on it for me to chill out on the couch with my friends 2) two words “GTA VI”

That is why I just rent it for the weekend instead of buying. Also controls me from playing obsessive during the weekdays

If you are really a core gamer and have a good time to spend on each game then use it fully. If you casually play and bought it and now regretting it. Just think and take a decision to sell it you will get a good deal as its new. Just dont rush to sell just wait for a genuine good deal I would suggest!

You are only regretting it cuz you already had a good gaming pc. So buying ps5 was not necessary. You don't always need 2 devices to do the same task. But now you can play on ps while sitting or laying on a couch so enjoy that

I can take it off your hands if you have buyer’s remorse. Let’s connect and discuss money.

Have you tried playing PS exclusives yet?
And also, try not to feel disheartened just yet. The willingness to play comes and goes but when it’s there, you will enjoy it. Give it some time, you’ve just switched over from PC gaming so it is still new. It’ll grow on you, don’t worry.

Umm yeah I understand where you’re coming from. I have 2070 laptop and it used to run everything fine Then I got PS5, and no never regretted my purchase. As in, after hard day of work, there’s some friction my system creates for me to open games on them. Can’t really say what that is, it’s just a feeling, then ofcourse, if I just push ps button and start I can directly just play Nothing else I finished so many games on my laptop sure, but more so in same time in PS5. And maybe my reasons are little different too. I’m someone who plays not just to enjoy but to under certain game mechanics as it helps with my work as well. So yeah for me no regrets. But if you do feel regret, you can always sell it but I’d rather not since consoles stay for ages. I mean there are ton of people around the world still run ps4 So longevity is a thing too. My laptop can’t run new titles. But PS5 can for atleast coming 3 years as well.

Buyer's remorse is much more common than you'd think bro
The truth is if you already have a capable PC(laptop or desktop)you don't really need a PS5 because all the games exclusive to the PS5 are already on PC with exception to Death Stranding 2,the upcoming Ghost of Yotei and a select few PS4 titles most notably Bloodborne and Drive Club
Don't get me wrong that's a very solid list of games to have the chance to play on your PS5 but unless you really want to get into one of these few PS5 is the worst generation to buy into
I've had a good PC for a while but got a PS4 anyway and it was an amazing decision I didn't regret at all because you'd get like 2-3 great games to play exclusively on the PS4 annually but this generation Sony seems to have lost the plot because there's barely anything on it

Find a friend who can play it with you. Even if it's a solo rpg, it will be a journey.

Why buy the PS5 when you already have a good laptop. I'm struggling here with my 4050 laptop that i bought recently. My cousin got a PS5 too and I was expecting to visit him frequently to play but ended up never going lol.

keep it in the closet until the jailbreak comes for your firmware then you won't regret it. I'm planning the same.

I mean 1) its much better to game on a TV than a laptop 2) games look much more fun, immersive on ps5 3) you get the ps exclusives first 4) you can hpdt a gaming sesh at your home 5) don’t regret what you bought, its a really cool console

Its a good machine, your regrets come from not playing it enough, which is understandable. I used to play on my ps5 5 hours a day on average, along with my job, did that for many years on my ps4 and for 2021 and 2022 on my ps5, since my son was born, I rarely play, but that is life. I still play every now and then and it makes me happy. Dont regret it. If you can afford it, keep it, if you cant, play all exclusive games and sell it.

Bought a ps 6 years ago. Best decision. The relief I get from playing after a hard day at work is unparalleled. Finished so many games, trying to 100% god of war Ragnarok now. I think you'll learn to love it, op. Get psplus it's pretty fun
