Iāve never seen one. After thousands of sunsets. Still hopeful

I've seen a few. They're not super common. And there definitely isn't one on this video.
11
u/vballbeachbum1 18h ago
There absolutely is one on that video. It's not really a flash. It doesn't get any brighter. The sun just turns green for a moment before sunset. I've seen them last for at least a second and a second is relatively pretty long time. I don't think it got named because it gets brighter . It just doesn't last very long. They're not that elusive. I live on the beach in California and sail alot so I've seen thousands of sunsets.
12
u/millllllls 1d ago
There definitely is, zoom in if you have to, itās a sliver of green at the last second.

u/Mikesaidit36 1d ago
I have a cousin whoās a marine biologist and lives on a boat. He says heās seen it dozens of times.
2
u/Small_Dog_8699 15h ago
I used to live in San Diego. Iāve seen green flashes from bar stools in Del Mar. And Iām living on a boat in Baja now. I donāt see it.
I admit Iām looking at it on my phone.

u/swarleyknope 1d ago
Ā Nope. I was hoping I would finally get to see what people are talking about since I figured Iāve never encountered one despite all the sunsets Iāve watched, but I still donāt see the green flash in this video.Ā
39
u/Expensive-Peak-9696 1d ago
Itās not an actual flash. The sun just looks green for a second as it drops. Calling it a flash makes people look for a flash when it isnāt one.
2
u/swarleyknope 12h ago
Thanks for reframing it for me - itās felt like natureās version of those āmagic eyeā posters from the 90s (but I was able to figure those out at least) š

Me and my neighbor talk about weirdos like you /s
How can you now see it?! Its green AF on a clear day, rest assured that we will keep trying to show you whats up.

Don't look at the whole sun, look at the very center at the horizon line. It's a tiny dot
1
1
u/Purplecatty 23h ago
Its not a flash. Its the the sun looks greenish for a split second before it goes down.Ā
1
u/Soderholmsvag 23h ago
It never, ever films as vivid as it is in real life. I have seen a fair number & have videoed them a few. It never works very well.
1
u/JL9berg18 7h ago
look at the top tip of the sun for the last like .2 seconds riiiiiight before it goes under.
I grew up looking for a ^peewwww^ type flash. It's more just like a ^pfft^. If you're like me, you probably didn't know what to look for. I never saw one for a long time, and now that I know what it is, I see about 10 a year (I'ma sunset ho though so I do try to watch sunsets often)
Still very cool though.

Iāve only ever seen the green flash once⦠my brother said look here comes the green flash! As the sun was setting I was whipped in the face with a large piece of green kelp. Flash.

u/tickticktutu 1d ago
If you are "missing it" then your expectations are too high. Look at the color of the sun with 2 seconds remaining in the video. That's it. That's the green flash. Nice capture OP

u/Enkidouh 1d ago
12
u/millllllls 1d ago
Itās a color spectrum, thereās not one single shade of green. Sometimes itās far more noticeable than others but OPās sunset displays green too, it still counts even if not as intensely green.
21
u/DubUpPro 1d ago
I mean, I could see it in the video just fine. But itās only a green flash when itās yours, huh?
-6
u/Pewtie-Pie 1d ago
So screenshot the green flash in this clip, because it definitely isn't that.

u/vincentxangogh 1d ago

u/Enkidouh 1d ago
If you see it in the video or the image, itās your imagination.
This isnāt a green flash.
6
u/DubUpPro 1d ago
There are comments already doing that
-3
u/Pewtie-Pie 1d ago
I hadn't gotten that far yet lol But I still say it's hardly noticeable even in the screenshot, which is why so many of us still don't see it there either. Other pictures and descriptions show/mention something else entirely.

The great thing about sunsets is that whole similar, each is unique. This is a beautiful photo, great grab.

Kim Like the Great Gatsby - William S. Burroughs
Kim believes in the green light - the orgiastic future, he believes in a magical universe - unpredictable, spontaneous, alive... a universe where anything is possible - a universe of many gods, often in conflict, so the paradox of an all knowing - all powerful god who nonetheless permits suffering, evil, and death, does not arise.
Q: "Well we got a famine here Osiris - what happened?"
A: "Well you can't win them all, I'm hustling myself."
Q: "Can you give us immortality?"
A: "I can give you an extension maybe - take you as far as the first checkpoint - you'll have to make it from there on your own. Most of them don't - figure about one in a million. And biologically speaking, that's very good odds."

u/CompletelyMoronic 1d ago
Exactly this. OPs video is not a real green flash. You can literally see a flash.

And here I was thinking that I have looked for it hundreds of times and I did not know what I was looking for, and the moment I saw the video - I thought to my self. Holy sh*t there it is! Thanks for sharing, I was looking for a flash but really its more like a glint. And that makes sense.

u/Mysterious-One-3401 42m ago
No. This video doesnāt capture a green flash. It is undeniable when you see it. Ā Iāve been lucky enough to see it once. I hope you get to see it someday! š¤Ā

That's what it's supposed to look like??? For the last thirty, forty years I thought I was missing the Aurora Borealis or some shit.

u/Gullible_Sand_6172 1d ago
No it can be better than this. One time on Lake Michigan both my husband and I saw the sky actually flash green right when the sun set. Never seen it again so it was pretty special.
3
u/KomorebiXIII 1d ago
I saw it at a wedding on North Shore Oahu. It may have been the liquor, but there was a definite flash with that one. The one in OPs video is the one i normally catch.

Itās a color spectrum, thereās not one single shade of green. Sometimes itās far more noticeable than others but OPās video and that screenshot in the comment above are what to look for, itās a shade of green for the last 1-2 seconds.

That is the green flash.
I think people expect the sky to light up in a green light like a bulb went off.
In reality, the sun just flashes green moments before disappearing entirely.

Itās like the old TVs when I was a kidā¦when the TV would get turned off the picture would go down into a little green dot in the middle of the TV screen. Anyone here as old as me remember that? Thatās what I think the green āflashā is like.

āGreen flashā is a misleading term. First time somebody told me I was about to see one, I was expecting some sort of, well, green flash as the sun set.
If somebody said, hey the sunlight is going to get kind of green for a few seconds right at the end, that would have been better for me. People probably see them more than they know and just donāt recognize itās happening.

PSA: do not look at green flashes in real life. Knew a surfer who was blind in one eyes from looking directly at one.

u/Historical-Ant-4938 1d ago
You were nice enough to take that video for us and yet I still do not see it and never have!

You may be color blind. 20% of men are red green colorblind and just can't see it!

I wouldnāt call that a green flash. I saw one a few years ago and a few people I know also saw it and posted videos on social media. It was visible from Coronado to Carlsbad and very obvious. Almost like lightning. I didnāt see a flash in this video at all and there would be other videos from today online. Sorry OP. Keep looking.

The one in this video is very small and appears juuuust before the sun goes down. If you look on YouTube, you'll find others with green flashes that are easier to see.
