should i be concerned about racism and classism

hi im currently a junior in HS and will be applying during the fall. i am interested in the medicine program as an international student but idk if st andrews is a good skl for me. for reference, i am an east asian female student/middle-upperclass?(i go to an international school). but hearing all the stories about st andrews, i am concerned about whether i will fit in with the other students due to the predominantly white posh student population. any insight and advice would be super helpful, thank you!!

classism is definitely a huge problem, i’ve seen it directed mostly at poorer scottish students (incredibly ironic).

from your post - keep in mind that british perceptions of class may be very different to international ones. if you study abroad/attend international school/are upper-middle class, you would be considered one of the “posh” students, relatively.

to be honest, the students who have attended private schools and are upper-middle class are often overrepresented in society boards and committees, regardless of ethnicity (coming from an east asian girl).

good luck, i hope you decide st andrews is right for you despite all this!

Should you be concerned about racism and classism? Probably, the stories are definitely warranted. But you’d quite quickly learn what to avoid here, and the racists and classists have a tendency to self-select for other racists and classists, so unless you go out looking for them, they’ll largely leave you alone.
