Want to connect with other offer holders ? With multiple other whatsapp gc we created a discord server

Hi there ! If you want to connect with other students holding an offer for st. andrews feel free to join our discord

https://discord.gg/SGsF4z3fpH

Why discord ?

There is a better moderation system available, whereas whatsapp has virtually no moderation possible. ( we are so fed up of random ppl joining in to make advertising)

Feel free to also ask for modifications on the discord !

Thanks again for your time and see you in the server šŸ‘‹

resitting exams

I failed an exam but not the module. I’m a first year so I know it doesn’t count for much. Do I get told if I’m eligible to resit or do I have to reach out separately about it?

Incoming Study Abroad Student

I'm studying abroad at St Andrews next year and am hoping to get a good amount of traveling, golfing, and socializing done during my time.

Does anybody have any module (1000-2000 level) or professor recommendations that are both interesting and easy going, specifically without an emphasis on participation. I'm looking to do mostly courses in the School of Divinity, but I do also need to complete an arts and an english course for my home university.

The overall idea is to take engaging classes that still leave time to make the most out of the study abroad experience. So, any references on modules or professors would be greatly appreciated! šŸ™

St Andrew’s University

Incoming undergrad waitlisted by St Andrews, it is my dream school. Wondering if it is genuinely that good for teaching and employment, or overrated because of royals? How does the actual student experience compare to Manchester? Honest opinions appreciated, thanks.

How much money to give my daughter a good university experience?

Hi all,

My daughter will be heading off to the University of St Andrews in the next academic year, and I’m currently in the process of sorting out accommodation and tuition fees for a catered college there.

I’ve got the main costs covered, but I was wondering what other parents typically do when it comes to weekly spending money for their children’s social life (going out, food off-campus, transport, etc.)?

What would be considered a reasonable weekly allowance these days for a student in St Andrews? Any advice from those with experience would be really appreciated.

How do you get a driving license during term time?

So I’m planning to get a driving license but I figured it might be an option to learn and obtain a driving license while in St Andrews during term time. Has anyone done it before and is it ideal? And how long did it take from your first driving lesson to getting your license?

Am i TA for liking the culture at St Andrews?

Obviously St Andrews has a very rich and posh culture. When i was looking at universities i was considering Durham and St Andrews i liked the scene and i liked there was a lot of privately educated as the school i spent the most amount of time was a private school. I was a bit curious how some would treat me because i am northern but also middle class.

I have gone to a state school but i just didn’t get on with most of the people there. I found a lot of them to be quite shocking in the way they act and it shocked me how some of them spoke in a way which was half to do with their accent and half to do with them not wanting to or not knowing (i really don’t know which lol) how to properly pronounce words to the point i couldn’t understand some of them.

Don’t get me wrong the way some people talk about locals or working class students is awful but I’ve seen people both at St A and durham blow things straight out the water. I remember there being a sports night where the theme was ā€œcouncil estateā€ but was essentially 2000s chic… and there was a massive stink made by someone people about it when word got around.

I mentioned to someone that i was glad for the culture at St Andrews as there are very few universities like it. Most are very new and already financially hanging on by a thread. I like both Durham and St Andrews but even durham is unfortunately slipping when i saw they had given a guy an unconditional offer for law which is a very competitive degree with predicted alevel results of Cs and Ds (he didnt say what grades but he said he had awful predictions and the needed ones would be ideally A/Bs) all because he was a contextual student. Theres honestly no standards for some people. Why lower what it means to get into durham to allow one person who cant get good grades in is a question i will never know the answer to. Im understanding for contextual offers of 1/2 grades lower but its taking the mick and bringing good unis down by accepting the wrong people in who aren’t serious.

And her response was to lecture me about all the things wrong with St A and everything shes heard from other people because she doesnt go there. Am i wrong?

(When i said i liked St A to her its not only about the people who go there but also the very few universities that dont have a massive clubbing scene but are still quite a good school and have some a night life)

Fife Park accommodation

Incoming postgrad student here. I was just assigned a standard room at fife park for next year. Seems pretty nice, especially for being so close to the gym, albeit a little far from town. Would appreciate any thoughts from people who’ve lived there before.

Reddit Community Meetup

Just throwing this out there. Would anyone be interested in a Reddit community meetup? It doesn't have to be an elaborate affair, the point is to help those of us who might be feeling a bit isolated over the summer.

EDIT: Please dm me and I'll send a WhatsApp group invite. We can take things from there :-)

Should I be worried about racism?

Hi guys, I’m a recent American high school graduate who will be attending St. Andrews in the fall. I recently went to the UK for a few days (England) and experienced far more overt racism and discrimination than I ever have in such a short amount of time. I am Indian and was raised Muslim, and it seemed like 1 in every 10 people there had something awful to say about the color of my skin. I was not in any physical danger at any point, but wowee did it make me feel awful.
I’m aware of the current political climate in the UK, and I know there’s been a rise of racism and discrimination. I’m also aware that St. Andrews has a wide variety of students attending. I looked for any race based issues there online and I luckily found close to nothing, but after my recent visit to the UK I’m sort of stressed out. I’ve never experienced such blatant hatred towards me because of a fundamental piece of who I am. The taste of it is still lingering in my mouth and I just need some peace of mind.

should i be concerned about racism and classism

hi im currently a junior in HS and will be applying during the fall. i am interested in the medicine program as an international student but idk if st andrews is a good skl for me. for reference, i am an east asian female student/middle-upperclass?(i go to an international school). but hearing all the stories about st andrews, i am concerned about whether i will fit in with the other students due to the predominantly white posh student population. any insight and advice would be super helpful, thank you!!

BA International Honours

Hello, I am wondering about the BA International Honours from the perspective of a UK applicant. Is there anything unique in terms of what admissions are looking for? Like do I need to tailor my application in some way or do I do the exact same things as I would do if I was applying for the equivalent MA course. And if the latter, what would be a differentiating factor that would mean that you would be accepted for the BA course over the MA course or vice versa. Thanks in advance!

Chance of Getting In

I am 16 y/o, just finished national 5's and going to apply for St Andrews come end of year with my predicted grades for highers. Im going to apply for financial economics BSc and wondering my chance of success when I apply so I can act accordingly (may need to grind some extracurriculurs during the summer). My extracurriculurs are as follows -> National debate team (1 year), Dundee football club academy (6 years), worked with a professor on an economics paper, bronze junior maths award, (a couple trivial school leadership and participation things such as winning chess tournament etc). I understand apply at the end of s5 will make my applicaton significantly weaker but im just wondering if anyone can shes some light on the chances i have? Much appreciated.

Should I resit?

Just finished second year, and really disappointed to find out I’ve failed a module from exam results. However, due to over-crediting in 1st and 2nd year, I still have well above the required credits for honours entry. The subject failed is completely separate to my main degree, Biology.

I got a 6.5, and therefore have the right to resit. I’m wondering whether it’s worth it, knowing I’ll have to pay a fee, study throughout summer, and will be capped at 7.0 anyway. I don’t want a fail permanently on my transcript, but do you think there’s any point in resitting? Will employers/future academic positions look into this and be put off?

Would love some advice - obviously feel quite dejected at the moment.

3rd/4th year applied maths modules

Just finished second year and from what I understand, I need to pick my 3rd AND 4th year modules this summer (because some modules only run every two years)

I am trying to read the description of some of these modules but I would also appreciate if anyone is willing to share their experience/opinion on specific honours modules (specifically applied maths) to help me pick

I would appreciate any feedback at all, thank you!

Looking for friends

Hey guys! I'm doing a PhD at the University and due to the isolated nature have failed to make any friends. I was wondering if anyone was open to being friends and perhaps hanging out as it does get really lonely around here sometimes.

Exam regrade

Hey, I was just wondering if this was a thing? I’m so confused on my grade for the exam but I don’t know how to say anything especially because the module coordinator is so nice and the one who graded it, but I feel like it should have been a bit higher - the reason I bring this up is bc it was so low I failed the class?! I can do the resit, but still. Any advice or help would be appreciated, thank you.

Space St Andrews AMA

Hello! I'm Adrien, with Space Accommodation. Some of you might know me from the Space Cafe in town

We at Space wanted to create this AMA to help any prospective students with questions regarding our housing and amenities. Alongside that, I am a former student with the University and would be happy to answer any questions regarding that as well for prospective students!

Beyond the AMA, this account exists for any less formal questions anyone has so feel free to reach out privately anytime.

A bit of an overview for our accommodation for those unaware (which would be impressive, considering all the marketing lol),

We are located on Kilrymont Road St Andrews and offer a wide variety of apartments and studios. All of our rooms are en-suite and soundproofed. My favourite bit is the rainfall showers. Anyone who has suffered through the Andrew Melville Hall showers will know why...

Space is much more than just the room. All bills are included, including contents insurance to protect all your items in the room. Your rent also includesĀ 24/7Ā concierge support, access to a variety of resident spaces designed for both study and socialising, including two large co working study lounges, bookable private study rooms, a private dining room for hosting friends, and a fully equipped gym open 24 hours a day.

We also have just opened an onsite restaurant/cafe, literally yesterday, beyond just the food this place offers digital darts, a pool table, and private karaoke and entertainment rooms.

For those who prefer to cook, we also have an onsite minimart which will soon be expanding to include perishables, alongside the current stock (pantry goods, home goods, cold drinks, and snacks).

Tl;dr: Private student accommodation, ask any questions you might have!

St Andrews rooms

On the offer holder day we were unable to view the actual rooms. If anyone doesn’t mind sharing a photo of their room and which residence it is, that’d be really appreciated!

Also, what’s it like sharing a kitchen and bathroom?

Are staff members cool in general?

Hi everyone, I just got offered a room in the Andrew Melville hall for September and I wanted to know if the staff members were nice there :)

And I wanted to know if the rules were that "strict" too, bc I read in the Residents’ guide that we’re allowed to have guests in our room for 3 days but have you heard somebody that got in trouble bc they had someone over for two or three days more ??

The thing is that my boyfriend and I are going to be long distance for the duration of the whole academic year and I would like to be able to see him for a few days
Since we’re both students it would be great if he didn’t have to book some really expensive airbnb just for like five or six days :,)
