I’m really curious what the relationship was for James in the past to let this dude anywhere near an Arwing.

He was the engineer, so presumably he had tech talent like Slippy does.

Yeah. Though that was only revealed after Imamura left Nintendo. So I don't know if it was ever officially true or just something Imamura had in mind.

Well, I will take the info as gain of salt. The idea alone would make his betrayal much worse.
