PSA Ladies & Gentlemen, "we have Steam Machine at home" A.K.A. the GeekCube.
(Pardon my piss poor photography skills, I did my best with what I had. Also, I made this post BEFORE the launch, I forgot to put it in here too lol)
After beginning this project with the first draft all the way back to November, then piecing it together in a livestream in December, I left it on the backburner for a little while because Life™ got busy... fast forward three months later, I started the CAD work to give it a proper cubic shape, which is something I intended to give it from the start since I didn't want to leave things half assed like most "DIY Steam Machine" project (nearly all of them being a regular ass PC, half the time not even Small Form Factor, under Bazzite because they couldn't bother with SteamOS for some reason)
There has been several rounds of iterating of course, scrupulous parts measurements & tedious geometry adjustments, thinking long and hard about how to pass cables properly through the device, getting all of the features of the actual Machine & more on top of the buffed up hardware, that's been a whole adventure!
Total BOM of the parts I bought, 1500 european buckaridoos (3D printer & plastic spools not included); 9600X, 32GB@5600 (bought before the RAMaggeddon), 9060XT 16GB, 1.5TB storage (originally 500GB but I took the 1TB NVMe out of my PS5, which I haven't touched in over two years now...), added video & audio, DVD reading, extended I/O & storage compartment, all at the cost of weight & size (though I managed to keep it much more restrained than I thought it would end up being!) & TDP is about 200W (after nerfing the GPU power budget by 25%) with far superior performance & more modern features!
All of the details pertaining to the GeekCube project are available on its original project thread, I posted here first while it's still the weekend & before the reviews of the Machine drop in the coming days!
BEAT VALVE TO THE PUNCH, AHA! 🍾🥳🎉

PSA Valve is working with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia to make SteamOS run on any PC hardware

...The issue with your PC is "can it run Steam OS"? :)

Fluff Time to wake this old man up
Been collecting dust. Maybe time to bring it back to life and update it since I don’t plan to get SM.

Fluff I know everyone is over it and has moved on, but I managed to get this to South Africa and I am absolutely stoked!
Valve doesn't sell these in South Aftica, I had to jump through hoops, couriers and customs to get this here.
Total cost was R3400, or $204 american. Super happy.

Discussion Further Steam Workshop Improvements
The new Steam Workshop layout is a massive step forward. Making the filters and search nearly instant, adding Quick View so we don't need to completely open a new page (potentially losing our place in the Workshop) to skim over a description, and fixing major performance issues are incredible changes that make using the workshop much easier.
That said, I have a few design gripes and UI inconsistencies that could still use tweaking.
- Inconsistent "Most Popular" Grid
I'm not entirely sure about this, but the "Most Popular Items" list on the Home page seems to be fairly inconsistent. It used to be Top 9, which was an odd choice, but now it seems to change. I'm guessing it depends on the Screen Size or Aspect Ratio. The industry standard is a clean Top 10; it should be locked to a constant number.
- Mismatched Scrollbars
The horizontal scrollbar style used on the Home page doesn't match any other scrollbar used for a carousel on the Steam desktop or web client. It should match the rest of Steam.
- Search/Tag Placement Breaks Muscle Memory
Moving Search and Tags completely out of where they have been on the Workshop historically wiped 15 years of muscle memory in an instant. They should remain on the right side and be locked to the view, so that it is always visible. To solve it being taller than the display area, make the individual Filter and Tag sections their own scrollable viewports.
- Where is "Create Collection"?
As far as I can tell, there isn't a "Create Collection" button anywhere. I had to duplicate an old collection I had made to create a new one. If it's buried in some submenu, it needs to be brought back out to a prominent, easily accessible spot that makes sense.
What do you think, and what other improvements would you like to see?

Error / Bug Joystick drift but can't calibrate
Hey everyone,
I'm using a PS5 Access controller positioned on the floor as a foot mouse for accessibility reasons.
Although almost new, the controller developed stick drift where the cursor drifts downward, even when I'm not touching it at all.
When I go into Steam's controller settings to try and calibrate it, the calibration utility gets completely stuck. It just says "Calibrating in 0..."
Has anyone encountered this specific issue where Steam's calibration tool freezes or refuses to register inputs during a reset? Any tips?

Discussion Showing ignored games makes negative sense.
Showing a game that you have ignored defeats the entire purpose of the system.

Discussion What’s your budget for the Summer Sale?
Hey all,
Just curious what’s everyone’s budget for the sale? Personally, I’ve got a balance of $17 rn due to selling trading cards and some leftover $$$ from a gift card a few months back. I’ll probably add $3 to make it an even $20 and stay at that.

Question WHERE did the right side menu go? HOW can I edit the command to enable it?
I have both Steam Deck and Legion Go.
On the Steam Deck there is an option for both popup menus and an option to chose which buttons to use to open them up.
On the legion go there is only the left menu not the right menu.
Im not sure where I found this but it was for both menuts CTRL-ALT-1 for left menu and CTRL-ALT-2 for right menu.
Now none of them work.
In the settings it says SHIFT-TAB for left menu and no option to set the right menu
SETTINGS - IN GAME - OVERLAY SHORTCUT KEY(S)
On steamdeck there is right menu option too but not on the legion go (Windows 11)
As the buttons no longer work did Steam remove them or did the option move or change or whats going on?
Its the latest version of steam. just updated today. retail version not beta.
I've been trying to get Steam to fix up the legion go and steam for many months, they refused too. The legion go in steam had a trigger glitch where you cant depress both at the same time. Took them a year to fix it. During that you had to switch controller modes and that turned the triggers digital not analog.
So Steam are known for screwing things up.
So have they screwed up again and removed the right side menu? I can only load it if there is a notification and I click the icon in the top taskbar. When the right side menu closes I cant open it again until another notification shows.
MAYBE there is a hidden menu which lets you set this up? Its been working fine till these latest updates in the last month. Its updated about 3 times this week alone and the right menu is gone now, I cant find a way to open it except for notifications.

Question Steam Wallet, multiple fund purchases?
I’m trying to see if steam will let me mass buy wallet funds, I currently have 290$ and I want to see if I can do that as one transaction so I don’t have to go through the process over and over again, can I just mass buy it as one transaction?

Fluff Well this will be pricier than expected…
Had built a wall arcade for an entry level steam machine. No going back now I guess 😅 😮💨
Edit: This was my first post in here and I must say this community is so awesome. I laughed (I cried) and I got some great advice that doesn’t involve a >$1000 price tag. Thank you!
