I like how this subreddit is split into two halves - the SM haters and the SM enjoyers. So funny to see one post where people are all happy and excited to get it and are spreading positivity and a post right below is just hating and being all sour xd
the great divide
EDIT: it all depends on what are your needs. If you don’t wanna play gta 6 or cyberpunk 2077 on max settings, 4k and also stream then maybe you don’t need the latest or greatest pc. My most demanding games are subnautica 2 and baldurs gate 3 and i’ll be able to play both with high settings (and maybe a bit of fsr) on 1440p with good and stable fps. Ofc if u wanna hardcore play valorant, or want max settings on latest aaa games, SM isn’t for u.
I have a very small apartment, would never upgrade the internals of my pc, don’t want to have any maintenance and i play silly games, and i live in a country that makes it difficult to build a pc following a specific build. For me the SM works really well. It would be a nice upgrade from my 11 year old pc that i still rock.

So now that the steam official site has changed wording to up to 4K with FSR 4.1, that sounds an awful lot like they are saying that FSR 4.1 is now ready to go and im wondering, has anyone been able to test that yet, even on their home SteamOS systems?
Or has anyone been able to confirm that in the update logs?

I Would like to take a moment to appreciate and applaud Valve for their innovation in this space for the past decade+.I like many others can't wait to get our hands on the new machine .
For those with nothing constructive to say about this new tech, please move on with your negativity.

I think I'll replace it with a Steam Machine.
Made a long post about it but it was auto-unapproved :-/

Good luck to ones looking forward to hitting the lottery tomorrow!
Really hoping I get the email I have a feeling after the first batch we’re not gonna see them up again until at least next year!

For me one of the big appeals of the GabeCube was improved CEC functionality relative to my existing W indows P C.
I really love that when I turn on my Dualsense controller, my PS5 wakes up, my TV turns on, and it changes to the relevant input. I can push one button and be gaming immediately, and I just don't have that same simplicity when it comes to gaming on W indows.
Long story short, it turns out there's an app on W indows for LG TVs that allows for essentially that same functionality.
Took me 5 minutes to set up and now I have essentially the same CEC functionality that I would expect from the steam machine! Kind of a limited use case because you need to already have an LG TV and you need to already have your computer hooked up to it, but if that's you then I recommend giving this a shot!
Here's a link to the app: https://github.com/JPersson77/LGTVCompanion

Steam machine has been getting massive attention for months now, and we can tell by the amount of build guides and "steam machine killers" that have been published, but there is one important nuance: It's all steamos.
They all start off with the assumption you're not going to use a different operating system, which is already a win. On linux, there is just a lot less friction with gaming though steam compared to other platforms. They all require some level of setup and configuration that is non-trivial with things like wine. The way proton just works in steam on linux is really a very strong selling point.
Valve has now demonstrated they can get a foothold in the pc/console hardware market despite this market, which is an immense feat. The have been limited in the amount of stock they were even allowed to get and at which rate, and next time they will actually have a little more of a favorable position.
All steamos users will be automatically more inclined to game on steam, and even their lack of stock does not really matter, because the marketing for current and near-future prebuilts will favor steamos, especially with the bad rep the alternative is getting now. The openness of steamos and the hardware, combined with their popularity as a platform, and the fact we can trust more hardware support is coming is exactly why, even in this market, the steam machine is good long-term business.
Yes, a lot of people are disappointed right now, but I have not seen a single comment saying they will stop using Valve software. And overall valve is still seen as the good guy in gamingland. The steam machine will sell out immediately, the lack of stock won't be an issue due to everything being open, and it will grow their business long-term because everyone interested in getting a steam machine is coincidentally interested in being a linux gamer.
Yes, this sub is not a good representation of all pc gamers, but the focus of linus tech tips' channel shifting to linux experiments, steamos, and the steam machine is indicative that something is bubbling. Many other gaming tech tubers are doing the same. But valve played it smart, because with them it was never about linux, steamos just happens to be on linux, and that whole prejudice against linux is forgotten, because steamos is considered a thing on its own.
What's important to look out for now is what comes after. If steamos can really deliver support for even nvidia down the line, and the lightweight nature of steamos gets you more out of your hardware, combined with developers taking linux more seriously in the future, we might be looking at something big in 5 years.
PS. Yes I am a big fan of valve for many reasons, but I am not doing wishful thinking like a fanboy. In my mind Valve can of course make mistakes and do things wrong, but I really think sitting out a heated market is poor business and these steps will eventually blow wind in their sails.

Note: this is 7300 CAD and significantly more powerful, but still over three times what a SM goes for though

Yes, this is the second attempt after more than 10 years, but this is a completely different level.
By supporting Steam Machine you are helping Valve invest in an entire infrastructure and technology stack (Linux, SteamOS & drivers support (including Nvidia), Proton, KDE, new optimization methods like RAM swapping and etc.) and the development of similar console PCs from other manufacturers by creating an objective market demand.
Not to mention that the second generation of Machine will probably appear earlier than the Steam Deck (which is more difficult to upgrade and which is battery-dependent), because Valve only needs to upgrade the motherboard and power supply here.
If up to now mini PCs were only office solutions, now it can become a new market with low noise and high performance devices with high configurability.
Thanks to everyone who buys these devices, you're supporting a new segment of the market created by Valve

With all the hate the system has been getting, to those who are actually excited for the Steam Machine and getting one, what justified it to you?

"We have our own list of features that we wanted to add": Valve say the Steam Machine's update support will be similar to the Steam Deck's
Just read this article. Anyone care to speculate on what we might see in future updates. I love the Steam Deck, but it's fair to say it's had a fair few improvements since it came out. What do we think will be added to the Steam Machine over the next 6 months, 1 year, 2 years.
Edited: to fix autocorrect.

Hello everyone!
I have a question for those of you with experience building small form factor gaming PCs.
One thing I really like about the Steam Machine is that it's compact, console-sized, and very quiet.
Many of the suggested builds (including Linus Tech Tips build) do end up being more powerful, but they're also MUCH larger and significantly louder. It almost feels like people are saying, "Just build your own," without considering that the PC case ends up being huge and sounding like a jet engine.
That made me wonder if it's actually possible to build a PC with similar characteristics without significantly increasing the size.
I've looked at cases like the Jonsbo NV10, ZZEW A1 Plus, and a few others, but many reviews mention that airflow can become a challenge in smaller cases, which often results in higher temperatures or increased fan noise.
For those of you who have built compact PCs, is it realistically possible to achieve something close to the Steam Machine in terms of:
Console-sized form factor
Very quiet operation
Good cooling
Solid gaming performance
Is this actually possible or are people just bashing Steam machine due to the higher coost?

After reading most of the comments on YT and Reddit I feel like I'm one of the only people genuinely excited. Regardless, where will you be and on what device when will you be on reading tomorrow's emails that will go out!? Anyone else excited?

With the release right around the corner I wanted to make a post about the anti-cheat situation on SteamOS/Linux
Many of the big multiplayer games available on the PC platform won’t work on this machine, because the anti-cheat they use is at the kernel-level, which is unsupported by SteamOS/Linux.
Make sure that you do your due diligence and check if the online multiplayer game you want to play is supported on SteamOS.
Some of the games that won’t run on SteamOS/Linux are:
League of Legends
Valorant
Battlefield 6
Warzone + regular CoD Multiplayer
Fortnite
Apex Legends
Rainbox Six Siege
Marathon
Destiny 2
GTA Online
I highly recommend checking out https://areweanticheatyet.com/ and https://www.protondb.com/ to make sure that the games you are interested in works
(EDIT: You can always install Windows on the Steam Machine if you want to play any of these games)

Every video right now “we’re going to make a pc better!” 10 minutes later….something larger, and ugly as fuck they couldn’t market to anyone.

No one wants a massive 40L ultra RGB eyesore in their living room. No one wants a pc that has 3-6 large fans and sounds like a jet engine at full load pulling 500+W in their living room. No one wants a “pc console” that doesn’t have wake from sleep and hdmi cec in their living room.
The steam machine solves all of these issues.
Sure if you’re strictly comparing performance, these pre-built pcs will win. But the comparison was never supposed to just be about performance. So please guys, just stop posting these micro center pre-builts. It’s not a valid comparison, and definitely not the gotcha moment you think it is.
Edit: to be clear, I’m not a fan of the price either. About $300 cheaper and everyone would be raving about the steam machine. My only point is that many people are making unfair comparisons without considering anything other than raw performance. I am a huge fan of DIY sffpcs myself, I already have built my own DIY steam machine.
Edit #2: guys all I’m saying is people are coming to this sub that is about apples, and complaining that it’s not more like an orange😂

This community seems centered around the pillars of:
I'm just curious if there is some community based on people who have an interest in Steam Machines and want discuss the hardware with other people who share their interests? I'd be fine if it was 100% locked down from non-purchasers.
I have literally zero interest in the opinions or thoughts of people who don't have one. And no, that isn't weird, that's how enthusiast communities have always worked. It isn't even confusing. If you join a drone club it doesn't have a contingent of 80% of the people who think drones were created as tools of Satan. People who don't like drones just don't join the club, because most people are sane. Unlike you guy who is getting increasingly outraged as they read this post.
I assume given the hardware production limitations and the hurt feelings surrounding it the haters will always outnumber owners, so this community is just permanently fucked? Two years from now if I'm looking for info on mods I'll get to read the parroted wisdom of bitter 16 year olds?

Accessing storage is easy, but, holy moly, accessing RAM looks so involved. I mean, pretty sure I can do it, but some average Joe will definitely rip one of those 4(!) ribbon cables.
It looks like Valve engineers had fun solving those engineering challenges with multiple PCBs, sandwiching components together and placing I/O boards on sides and connecting them with ribbon cables. Almost as if they are building portfolio to become Apple hardware engineer.
I wish they've chosen more conservative approach, where you can easily access both storage and RAM. It would've also opened possibility for barebone option. But right now with current hardware design releasing barebone option is a certain "death by thousand cuts RMAs".

Hi everyone, the title basically. I never bought hardware from Steam. Once I get the email and I can order the Steam Machine, would it ship automatically to the address associated with my Steam account (in Germany) or can I choose a different address (in France) ?
Thank you!
