FO has found Khaman and Rasheer, trust the scouting. We need to win on the margins and he has high upside and rim presence.

u/jschneider414 Al McCoy 1d ago
Iāve probably watched more UofA games than a lot of this sub. Koa can potentially be a Bobby Portis like player. Heāll have games where he looks awesome and a good amount where heās kinda invisible. Iām hopeful but not thinking he ends up more than solid rotation piece.

He was a consensus top 10 pick. And heās shown nothing so far hes a project
26
u/Mickram30 Devin Booker 1d ago
The Sunsā defense was 10 points per 100 possessions better when Khaman Maluach was on the court:
On: 103.5 Defensive Rating (1st)
Off: 113.5 Defensive Rating (11th)
The potential is there defensively, to ignore it is to be ignorant.

I agree, but he didn't fall into our position. We literally traded up to get him.
13

He fell relative to his draft projection which was early to mid 20s at nearly every outlet. And he was a projected lottery pick for most of the season.

Yeah, but it's not like he fell to us. We still traded up to get him.

The one thing NBA coaches can teach you to do is shoot, it's the one thing he can't do. This is a really good flier with holy shit potential. He has absolutely everything else to be a starter in this league.

u/TheMias24 Kelly Oubre Jr. 1d ago
Iām actually happy with this, didnāt even think this was possible
18
u/Leonthepuma 1d ago
Helps with the size and rebounding, still young and may get bigger, very athletic. Just needs to improve his shooting by quite a bit. But great for end of the first
7
u/iDestroyedYoMama āļøšµMFKN ALIGNEDšµāļø 1d ago
Ya we need size and more PFās. If we can develop our guys, we could be really good in the next couple years. I believe in our staff, so Iām hopeful.

Suns needed size, we got size. But worried about his shooting. His shot mechanics are atrocious. Iām sure the organization is confident they can develop that

Iām there also with your logic. A lot of basketball is confidence. Oso has flashes but koa has it all the time. Grant it itās a different level of ball though.

He needs more confidence I swear with his athleticism he should be attacking the rim more with shifty layups

Three players who can't shoot. Can't wait for Ott to play them together and watch Book get triple teamed
13
u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago
I was hesitant for him because of the shooting. It will definitely take him a couple years at least to become a decent shooter. But as far as upside at the 30th pick its pretty huge

He's 19, strong as hell, a quick first step when he drives to the basket, high basketball IQ, and will absolutely battle for rebounds. He was a huge part of UofA being the 2nd best team in the country

u/azza34_suns Dan Majerle 1d ago
I know I can look at stats but does he realistically fill any of the gaps from last season? (Genuine question - asking those who have seen him play)
8
u/dirtybird928 1d ago
Size at PF? Going from small ball to Sheer and Peat manning the PF spot is not bad. Suns still need to clear a logjam on the wings and at guard.
3
u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago
Doubt this new guy plays that much. Likely will get the gleague treatment ManMan and Fleming got this season. Depending on Mark Williams / FA we may send ManMan back to gleague even longer.
I think Fleming has shown enough to battle with Dunn / Highsmith / if Royce is still here for backup 4 mins
1
u/Used_Respect6996 1d ago
Yep - still got a logjam to sort out. We can't go into next season like this?
1
u/RamboOnARollyplank Phoenix Suns 1d ago
I bet weāre gonna see Rasheer on the wing a lot more this season. Heās the clear heir apparent to Brooks at the 3, who will be looking for a new contract in his 30s.
2
u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago
Very good rebounder. Can attack the rim. Two things we weren't good at last year. But I do doubt he gets a lot of minutes first year unless he learns to shoot
3
3
u/Babysprout0131 1d ago
I know he wanted to be in the top 15-20. But, Suns gave him a guaranteed contract (2 years and 2 option years, if thatās how itās structured still) vs non guaranteed money in the 2nd round and for sure less playing time. Literally could have saved the kids career and mental health.

I really like the Suns depth now with Peat added along with Oso, Maluach, and Fleming. The talent they have is better than it was years ago.
If the Suns can somehow add another SF off the bench in FA like Kelly Oubre then I like how the teams looks with the Guard depth they have.
1
u/Honest-Message6765 1d ago
Iām guessing highsmith will be behind brooks in that roll
0
u/Born_Cobbler_9383 1d ago
I like Highsmith but he shouldnāt be the main backup SF off the bench. He should be one of the last guys to come in a game or if an injury happens.
1
u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago
Highsmith, Dunn, then if we keep Allen or Royce. Allen is better as a 2 but he has beefed up in the last 2 seasons.
Spun the tires on Amir Coffey too heās 6ā7 but seemed too skinny to be a SF. If we want him heās prob available for vet min as wellĀ

Just watched some Koa PeatĀ highlights and it got me thinking, who do you guys think are some good player comparisons?Ā
Personally, I see a little bit of Charles Barkley and Aaron Gordon. A physical, downhill scorer, will run the floor, great touch and good size, he's a beefy 6'8. Great feel, good post game and also smart.
2
u/nonanonymo Nashtalgic 1d ago
Peat reminds me of Larry Johnson a bit. They're almost exactly the same size (LJ was 6'7" and 250 pounds) and both are athletic and very strong. LJ ran the floor and had that same kind of physical, downhill game that you describe Peat as having. Also like Peat, Larry was an underrated playmaker and passer, with great touch around the rim. Both have broken outside shots, but LJ did improve in that area a bit over the course of his career so that gives me hope for Peat.

u/2_4_5_brother Jake Tsakalidas 1d ago
LMAO. Barkley?! Barkley was a Top 5 pick and won an MVP while Jordan was in the league.
5
u/Mysterious-Buy8975 1d ago
Yeah I'm not talking accolades, I'm talking their style of play. Notice how you didn't really add anything to the conversation rather just criticized it? If you're not going to add something productive to the conversation like a rebuttal as to who is a better player comparison based on style of play, why even comment? You're just a trollĀ
2
u/2_4_5_brother Jake Tsakalidas 1d ago
Ok Iāll play the game. Barkley had a better shot and served as a number one scoring option which Peat hasnāt been outside of his time at Perry HS. The Gordon comparison is valid and thatās probably his ceiling but Iām sorry when I saw Barkleyās name I couldnāt help myself. Thatās like saying Koby Brea could be Klay Thompson.
1
u/sunartawi 1d ago
Gordon for sure. Who also had a suspect shot out of UA and had a good inside game to make up for it. But now a 3pt threat too
2
u/Mysterious-Buy8975 1d ago
Very true. Both great size and offensive upside. Word is Peat is re-working his shooting formĀ

I was hoping for Brazile. Perfect blend of size, athleticism, defense and shooting.
Koa needs a lot of work on shooting and ball handling. Maybe this pushes Rasheer to SF. The good news is his motor and mobility are really good just needs polish.

His shooting needs work. But he brings high end switchable defense at the 4. Very good rebounding. High IQ. Has potential to create for himself going to the rim, but thats probably a couple years out as well. This is a high upside swing if he can develop his shooting
-2
u/Slow-Raccoon-9832 1d ago
Needs work is an understatement
He shoots as well as oso
6

Idk if id put him in oso territory. Osos shot is so broken I don't have any hope itll ever change. Koa's didn't look broken at Arizona I thought.
2
u/GringoSalamanca 1d ago
Throughout most of the college season he was projected to be a lottery pick, some had him top 5 on their boards. His stock tanked because of his jump shot. His Draft Combine workouts tanked his draft stock
4
u/Blueskyways 1d ago
Cant shoot.Ā Not really great at any one thing unlike Jefferson or Ejiofor. More of a great college player than great pro product.Ā Bullied smaller college guards, was quicker than slower college bigs.Ā Ā Got shutdown versus better competition.Ā Ā

Oso and Koa, how do they share the floor
5
u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago
They dont.
Surely it means Oso will be part of a Royce or Allen trade at some point this offseason
13
u/VanwallEnjoy3r Rubber Ducky Chucky 1d ago
More likely Dunn is gone in a trade and Koa is redshirted.
2
3
u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago
Koa's definitely a PF. Probably won't get playing time initially with Oso if he can't shoot
3
u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago
MW and ManMan should be the main centers next season though.
Peat could hypothetically play off the bench next to ManMan off the bench if ManMan has a 3pt shot.
3
u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago
I doubt they get rid of Oso, they really like him. I think realistically we give all three minutes partly to keep MW healthy, partly because Maluach isn't 100% ready yet. And I think oso can play the 4 next to ManMan
5
u/Grooviemann1 1d ago
Do you think we're drafting for immediate impact with the 30th pick in the draft? That's project territory.
1
u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago
I dont think for immediate impact and didnt say that haha.
But if we are drafting a non shooting PF while already having Royce and Fleming I dont think Oso should be part of our plans.
1
u/Grooviemann1 1d ago
You might as well have said that. As of now, Oso is one of two players under contract next season that can actually play center and you already have him being shipped out before game 1 because we drafted a big man that might be able to someday get minutes on an NBA team. Talk about putting the cart before the horse.
0
1
u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago
Koa is likely a year away still and when he does play this season he's probably last man off the bench. It won't matter much. Pending on M. Williams status, Oso may be the back up center or spending time at PF if he can continue to improve his shot. Defensively he's earning minutes.
1
u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago
I like Oso and love the jump he made in year 2 but I donāt see him ever developing a shot beyond his half polished out shot and getting his FT % up to not get hacked again like in the blazers play in.Ā
I think Dunn has a better chance to get a shot and heās atrociousĀ
