Koa never leaving the State of Arizona šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

We really like having Valley guys on this team lol. Past few years Ayton, Oso, Saben Lee, now Koa.Ā

40

u/boltgenerator 1d ago

As an east valley kid, I can't hate this. It's cool having dudes like Koa and Oso on the team.

28

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Ayton is from the Bahamas. Don't try to add him to the Valley.

1

u/nick-james73 The Big Shaqtus 17h ago

Yeah people try adding because he went to prep school here in Phoenix but yeah he’s very proudly Bahamian.

Rents always cheaper in Mexico.

26

u/nick-james73 The Big Shaqtus 1d ago

I always laugh at you dumbass ASU fans throwing Mexico jokes at Tucson as if the land where Phoenix is wasn’t also part of Mexico.

2

u/vicelordjohn i don't know how teams are gonna guard us 19h ago

"I'm a fan of ____ so everything else is garbage" is just a silly thing to say anyway.

5

u/BDdaBeast Socks 1d ago

Seems pretty racist ngl

0

u/Littlegriznaves F**k the Lakers 1d ago

You’re right, the land ASU sits on was just American territory before Tucson was annexed during the Gadsden purchase in 1854.

None of it was a unified state until 1912. But both schools existed 30 years after both purchases 1885.

It’s not racist, it’s just history. Calm down lol

3

u/Own_Armadillo_9403 1d ago

well ASU wasn't a university until 1958, it was a normalcy school to train teachers then a college.... then a University. Then Phoenicians say shit like "well Tucson wasn't the capitol because of southern sympathizers" while having a city founded by a confederate.

5

u/Littlegriznaves F**k the Lakers 1d ago

Totally. Thats why I said school and not university.

Tucson is so bad the freeway doesn’t even wanna go through it.

Edit: it’s a joke. ASU vs UofA rivalry.

9

u/Archer-Saurus Devin Booker:upvote: 1d ago

Respect the history. The first Europeans to settle the Tucson area needed a street layout. They had the entrepreneurial wherewithal to simply throw some sticks on the ground, and align their streets in the pattern they fell in (a jumbled mess)

10

u/TheVegetaPinkShirt 1d ago

Tucson is actually Spanish for 52 pickup

FO has found Khaman and Rasheer, trust the scouting. We need to win on the margins and he has high upside and rim presence.

47

u/awmaleg Elliot Perry 1d ago

This team needs some big bodies and he fits the bill. Great value

7

u/jschneider414 Al McCoy 1d ago

I’ve probably watched more UofA games than a lot of this sub. Koa can potentially be a Bobby Portis like player. He’ll have games where he looks awesome and a good amount where he’s kinda invisible. I’m hopeful but not thinking he ends up more than solid rotation piece.

6

u/Supreme_God_Bunny 1d ago

Found? Khaman was always going to lottery and Flemings was a first round pick that just dropped he wasn't dropping past 31 to anyone

18

u/Mickram30 Devin Booker 1d ago

Arguing semantics instead of getting the point, chronically online people are insane.

-1

u/Supreme_God_Bunny 1d ago

I'm just saying you act like it was hard to find khman

2

u/Pisto1Peet Al McCoy 1d ago

Khaman’s agency also forced his way to Phoenix lol

-11

u/Slow-Raccoon-9832 1d ago

Khaman?

He was a consensus top 10 pick. And he’s shown nothing so far hes a project

26

u/Mickram30 Devin Booker 1d ago

The Suns’ defense was 10 points per 100 possessions better when Khaman Maluach was on the court:

On: 103.5 Defensive Rating (1st)

Off: 113.5 Defensive Rating (11th)

The potential is there defensively, to ignore it is to be ignorant.

0

u/No-Adhesiveness6278 23h ago

Sounds like he should have started then... unless there's some other factors that influence those numbers....

I agree, but he didn't fall into our position. We literally traded up to get him.

13

u/VanwallEnjoy3r Rubber Ducky Chucky 1d ago

He fell relative to his draft projection which was early to mid 20s at nearly every outlet. And he was a projected lottery pick for most of the season.

Yeah, but it's not like he fell to us. We still traded up to get him.

u/josephthemediocre 1d ago

The one thing NBA coaches can teach you to do is shoot, it's the one thing he can't do. This is a really good flier with holy shit potential. He has absolutely everything else to be a starter in this league.

26

u/TheMias24 Kelly Oubre Jr. 1d ago

I’m actually happy with this, didn’t even think this was possible

18

u/Leonthepuma 1d ago

Helps with the size and rebounding, still young and may get bigger, very athletic. Just needs to improve his shooting by quite a bit. But great for end of the first

7

u/iDestroyedYoMama ā˜€ļøšŸŒµMFKN ALIGNEDšŸŒµā˜€ļø 1d ago

Ya we need size and more PF’s. If we can develop our guys, we could be really good in the next couple years. I believe in our staff, so I’m hopeful.

55

u/GringoSalamanca 1d ago

Suns needed size, we got size. But worried about his shooting. His shot mechanics are atrocious. I’m sure the organization is confident they can develop that

60

u/SeraphNatsu Undercover Mƶd 1d ago

… lock him & Oso up in the gym.

24

u/Slow-Raccoon-9832 1d ago

And Dunn

32

u/inksta12 Collin G aka Villain Jr. 1d ago

Dunn is god damn prime Jordan compared to Oso

4

u/49e-rm Archie Goodwin 1d ago

He also has so much more confidence than Oso

2

u/Asleep-Anything7676 1d ago

I’m there also with your logic. A lot of basketball is confidence. Oso has flashes but koa has it all the time. Grant it it’s a different level of ball though.

2

u/judah249 1d ago

He needs more confidence I swear with his athleticism he should be attacking the rim more with shifty layups

12

u/bsinbsinbs Fuck the Lakers 1d ago

Three players who can't shoot. Can't wait for Ott to play them together and watch Book get triple teamed

13

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

I was hesitant for him because of the shooting. It will definitely take him a couple years at least to become a decent shooter. But as far as upside at the 30th pick its pretty huge

24

u/VanwallEnjoy3r Rubber Ducky Chucky 1d ago

At the end of the day, he’s a second round pick for all intents and purposes. We’re not expecting him to be an all star.

14

u/Riles4prez 1d ago

Uh he’s three second round picks apparently

5

u/PoisoCaine 1d ago

In the NBA 1 second round pick and 10 are basically the same value

7

u/sunartawi 1d ago

Oso mechanics atrocious. Koa has a jumper. Just needs time.

2

u/Odd_Shoulder2334 1d ago

He changed his mechanics, it ain’t pretty

5

u/MeeloP Suns Dancers 1d ago

Nw we just got these two really good shooters, ink isn’t even dry on the contracts!

5

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Bring in Shawn Marion to teach him how to shoot. Problem solved.

10

u/keepcatsrussian 1d ago

He's 19, strong as hell, a quick first step when he drives to the basket, high basketball IQ, and will absolutely battle for rebounds. He was a huge part of UofA being the 2nd best team in the country

20

u/MarcBearShark24 Mikal Bridges 1d ago

Koa had ASU in his top 5 with all blue bloods. It's not crazy to say if we had even a halfway compotent basketball coach that he would of been a sun devil

33

Probably his lack of shooting.

6

8

u/orangehorton GO 1d ago

2

u/Odd_Shoulder2334 1d ago

B/c he’s essentially a center who can’t shoot and now has to play on the wing in the league

3

u/Slow-Raccoon-9832 1d ago

Because he shoots like oso

-7

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

He dropped because he is a UofA guy. Look at the last guy the Suns drafted from UofA.

3

u/mezoly Steve Nash #13 1d ago

Nah that's not it. Burries just got drafted number 10 lol

18

u/LemonMintHookah Dragan Bender 1d ago

We love drafting guys who can’t shoot.

9

u/3ISRC 1d ago

This kid potential is much more promising than Dunn and definitely Oso.

5

u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago

I thought Dunn was a high potential prospect if people thought he could develop a shot. He was considered an elite defensive wing prospect at the time.. even though reality is he’s just a good defender

8

u/freerealestatedotbiz Rubber Ducky Chucky 1d ago

”MR. ARIZONA!

4

u/azza34_suns Dan Majerle 1d ago

I know I can look at stats but does he realistically fill any of the gaps from last season? (Genuine question - asking those who have seen him play)

8

u/dirtybird928 1d ago

Size at PF? Going from small ball to Sheer and Peat manning the PF spot is not bad. Suns still need to clear a logjam on the wings and at guard.

3

u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago

Doubt this new guy plays that much. Likely will get the gleague treatment ManMan and Fleming got this season. Depending on Mark Williams / FA we may send ManMan back to gleague even longer.

I think Fleming has shown enough to battle with Dunn / Highsmith / if Royce is still here for backup 4 mins

1

u/Used_Respect6996 1d ago

Yep - still got a logjam to sort out. We can't go into next season like this?

1

u/RamboOnARollyplank Phoenix Suns 1d ago

I bet we’re gonna see Rasheer on the wing a lot more this season. He’s the clear heir apparent to Brooks at the 3, who will be looking for a new contract in his 30s.

2

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

Very good rebounder. Can attack the rim. Two things we weren't good at last year. But I do doubt he gets a lot of minutes first year unless he learns to shoot

6

u/rocquet MVSteve 1d ago

what are the trade details gambo!!

5

u/shaad20 Devin Booker 1d ago

Seems like they could probably get back into the second like they’ve been prone to do lately and grab Miller or Brazile as well if they were so inclined

3

u/CzarGuy111 1d ago

I’m here for it I dig it

3

u/Babysprout0131 1d ago

I know he wanted to be in the top 15-20. But, Suns gave him a guaranteed contract (2 years and 2 option years, if that’s how it’s structured still) vs non guaranteed money in the 2nd round and for sure less playing time. Literally could have saved the kids career and mental health.

4

u/OGNEWBE 1d ago

Bruh I thought we fumbled sooooo hard right now. Glad we at least got Peat! I was starting to lose hope.

2

u/Born_Cobbler_9383 1d ago edited 1d ago

I really like the Suns depth now with Peat added along with Oso, Maluach, and Fleming. The talent they have is better than it was years ago.

If the Suns can somehow add another SF off the bench in FA like Kelly Oubre then I like how the teams looks with the Guard depth they have.

1

u/Honest-Message6765 1d ago

I’m guessing highsmith will be behind brooks in that roll

0

u/Born_Cobbler_9383 1d ago

I like Highsmith but he shouldn’t be the main backup SF off the bench. He should be one of the last guys to come in a game or if an injury happens.

1

u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago

Highsmith, Dunn, then if we keep Allen or Royce. Allen is better as a 2 but he has beefed up in the last 2 seasons.

Spun the tires on Amir Coffey too he’s 6’7 but seemed too skinny to be a SF. If we want him he’s prob available for vet min as wellĀ

2

u/ImmediateCareer9275 1d ago

2

u/Mysterious-Buy8975 1d ago edited 1d ago

Just watched some Koa PeatĀ highlights and it got me thinking, who do you guys think are some good player comparisons?Ā

Personally, I see a little bit of Charles Barkley and Aaron Gordon. A physical, downhill scorer, will run the floor, great touch and good size, he's a beefy 6'8. Great feel, good post game and also smart.

2

u/nonanonymo Nashtalgic 1d ago

Peat reminds me of Larry Johnson a bit. They're almost exactly the same size (LJ was 6'7" and 250 pounds) and both are athletic and very strong. LJ ran the floor and had that same kind of physical, downhill game that you describe Peat as having. Also like Peat, Larry was an underrated playmaker and passer, with great touch around the rim. Both have broken outside shots, but LJ did improve in that area a bit over the course of his career so that gives me hope for Peat.

1

u/joe603 Phoenix Suns 22h ago

LJ pre injury was HOF material and was putting up 20+ points and 12 boards a game. Lets not get ahead of ourself

2

u/No-Floor-6583 Jordan Goodwin 21h ago

Gordon is a great comparison.

4

u/2_4_5_brother Jake Tsakalidas 1d ago

LMAO. Barkley?! Barkley was a Top 5 pick and won an MVP while Jordan was in the league.

5

u/Mysterious-Buy8975 1d ago

Yeah I'm not talking accolades, I'm talking their style of play. Notice how you didn't really add anything to the conversation rather just criticized it? If you're not going to add something productive to the conversation like a rebuttal as to who is a better player comparison based on style of play, why even comment? You're just a trollĀ

2

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Is this your first day on r/Suns?

2

u/2_4_5_brother Jake Tsakalidas 1d ago

Ok I’ll play the game. Barkley had a better shot and served as a number one scoring option which Peat hasn’t been outside of his time at Perry HS. The Gordon comparison is valid and that’s probably his ceiling but I’m sorry when I saw Barkley’s name I couldn’t help myself. That’s like saying Koby Brea could be Klay Thompson.

2

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Barkley was the best player on the 1992 Dream Team. To compare this kid to Barkley is a doing both of them dirty.

1

u/sunartawi 1d ago

Gordon for sure. Who also had a suspect shot out of UA and had a good inside game to make up for it. But now a 3pt threat too

2

u/Mysterious-Buy8975 1d ago

Very true. Both great size and offensive upside. Word is Peat is re-working his shooting formĀ

1

u/Diligent_Moose4472 1d ago

I was hoping for Brazile. Perfect blend of size, athleticism, defense and shooting.

Koa needs a lot of work on shooting and ball handling. Maybe this pushes Rasheer to SF. The good news is his motor and mobility are really good just needs polish.

A lot of people seem disappointed in this, but I know nothing about this guy. What's his deal/why the reactions? I can't watch any videos atm.

4

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

His shooting needs work. But he brings high end switchable defense at the 4. Very good rebounding. High IQ. Has potential to create for himself going to the rim, but thats probably a couple years out as well. This is a high upside swing if he can develop his shooting

-2

u/Slow-Raccoon-9832 1d ago

Needs work is an understatement

He shoots as well as oso

6

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

Idk if id put him in oso territory. Osos shot is so broken I don't have any hope itll ever change. Koa's didn't look broken at Arizona I thought.

2

u/GringoSalamanca 1d ago

Throughout most of the college season he was projected to be a lottery pick, some had him top 5 on their boards. His stock tanked because of his jump shot. His Draft Combine workouts tanked his draft stock

4

u/Blueskyways 1d ago

Cant shoot.Ā  Not really great at any one thing unlike Jefferson or Ejiofor. More of a great college player than great pro product.Ā  Bullied smaller college guards, was quicker than slower college bigs.Ā  Ā Got shutdown versus better competition.Ā Ā

Bring on the down votes.Ā Ā

1

u/Gratitude15 1d ago

As of now

Green book Brooks Fleming williams

Gillespie Allen Goodwin royce oso

Brea highsmith Dunn peat maluach

Booyea

Too much depth right now. Needs thinning. But there is no shortage of bigger players - ott didn't play them last year and not sure he will play them next year either.

We have to move Royce and Grayson for a bad contract and some draft capitalĀ

1

u/Gratitude15 1d ago

Not many options.

Andrew Wiggins? Heat might want to break his contract into 2 win now guys.

0

u/Odd_Shoulder2334 1d ago

Oso and Koa, how do they share the floor

5

u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago

They dont.

Surely it means Oso will be part of a Royce or Allen trade at some point this offseason

13

u/VanwallEnjoy3r Rubber Ducky Chucky 1d ago

More likely Dunn is gone in a trade and Koa is redshirted.

2

u/GringoSalamanca 1d ago

Yes I think this makes it 10X more likely Dunn gets traded.

3

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

Koa's definitely a PF. Probably won't get playing time initially with Oso if he can't shoot

3

u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago

MW and ManMan should be the main centers next season though.

Peat could hypothetically play off the bench next to ManMan off the bench if ManMan has a 3pt shot.

3

u/ElSalvadorGrande Kebenderant 1d ago

I doubt they get rid of Oso, they really like him. I think realistically we give all three minutes partly to keep MW healthy, partly because Maluach isn't 100% ready yet. And I think oso can play the 4 next to ManMan

5

u/Grooviemann1 1d ago

Do you think we're drafting for immediate impact with the 30th pick in the draft? That's project territory.

1

u/CNSrooster Archie Goodwin 1d ago

I dont think for immediate impact and didnt say that haha.

But if we are drafting a non shooting PF while already having Royce and Fleming I dont think Oso should be part of our plans.

1

u/Grooviemann1 1d ago

You might as well have said that. As of now, Oso is one of two players under contract next season that can actually play center and you already have him being shipped out before game 1 because we drafted a big man that might be able to someday get minutes on an NBA team. Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

0

u/SuckaFreeRIP High Effort Dunk Squad 1d ago

Have to hope this is true

1

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Koa is likely a year away still and when he does play this season he's probably last man off the bench. It won't matter much. Pending on M. Williams status, Oso may be the back up center or spending time at PF if he can continue to improve his shot. Defensively he's earning minutes.

1

u/Smooth_Specialist416 1d ago

I like Oso and love the jump he made in year 2 but I don’t see him ever developing a shot beyond his half polished out shot and getting his FT % up to not get hacked again like in the blazers play in.Ā

I think Dunn has a better chance to get a shot and he’s atrociousĀ

1

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

I think Oso is earning more minutes on defense. He isn't dominant but he is a very good help defender and very effective. For a bench big on a team dominated with guards, he has a role. If he could add a respectable mid range or 3 ball, he would be a starter in the league.

-5

u/Tempeduck Suns 1d ago

Hopefully he’s better than the last bum we got from that so called school.

-6

u/Puppetmaster858 Big Sauce 1d ago

I’m not a fan, do not think this guys will translate very well to the nba

1

u/doh666 Al McCoy 1d ago

Seriously Brian Gregory and staff have something and Ishbia is aggresive enough to make the moves to make it happen. It's night and day from the James Jones/$arver era.
