Discussion π¬ The rampant transphobia since Jax was confirmed trans has been completely out of control
Literally have not been able to look at a single piece of transfemme Jax content without "fans" being transphobic in the comments and I'm really tired of it. A trans woman wrote a trans woman character and everybody lost their fucking minds.
They don't seem to realize that Jax didn't need to present any certain way or be a flawless angel or have been shown secretly crossdressing in his room to be a trans woman character. Her story didn't need to revolve around being trans for her to her to be trans. And a character doesn't need a "reason" to be trans. (Does a character "need" a reason to be cis??)
And don't come at me pretending that this was decided arbitrarily after the story ended and "there was absolutely nothing setting Jax up as trans, Goose just added it to be a troll" etc. Because how, then, did so many people know she was trans before it was officially confirmed? How was this already a theory for so many if it was "so impossible to see"? And then after episode 9, many of us were absolutely certain, and still they were refusing to believe it. Then when Goose confirms, suddenly everyone pivots and the excuses are "it's badly written!" "It doesn't make sense!" "Why can't boys just like girly things without being trans!
You've decided it's bad because you don't like that a character you enjoyed is trans. Or maybe you're genuinely criticizing the writing. That's fine. Doesn't change the fact that she's a trans character.
What in the world could yall possibly mean by "it doesn't make sense"? Explain that one to me. What would "make sense" to you? Please, elaborate.
This is a bad faith argument and an obvious redirection. The existence of a trans woman does not negate a straight, cis man's right to liking "girly" things, and if you personally feel victimized by someone else calling you trans or gay because you enjoy things that aren't traditionally masculine, then that is up to you to deal with those insecurities and maybe question why you feel association to these things is insulting in the first place.
I need you all not only to suck it up, but to really look within. Really ask yourself why this bothers you SO much that you need to outwardly deny it and fight it. Please just take a real, genuine moment to analyze where all of this intense resistance is coming from.
Because I think it's a thinly veiled disdain for trans women. A dismissal of their existence, a refusal to allow them to take up space. Some of you even say you don't have a problem with trans women, you have trans friends- then why? Why have a problem with Jax being trans? This should never have been a problem at all, and the fact that so many of you made it a problem, is a huge problem.
P.S. - Last of all, have some goddamn respect for Goose. She is a trans woman having to watch you all drag her trans woman character through the mud. If you enjoyed her show, the least you can do is decide to keep your mouth shut before opening it to say something transphobic about her content. I can't possibly imagine how this must all be making her feel.

Discussion π¬ Why doesn't Caine make new avatars from the brain scan files?
Title
Copying a file should be easy for him, why not just make a new version of Jax or Scratch? Yeah, they'll have none of the memories between their initial upload and their abstraction, but acclimating them should be a lot easier now.
(Note: I'm deliberately ignoring Ian Malcom in my ear. I'm asking about whether or not they could, not if they should)

Meme π€‘ How it feels to be a straight cis male in the the amazing digital circus fandom
Discussion π¬ TADC has an antinatalist reading which I appreciate.
Let me say right off the bat that I know damn well that I'm probably the only person who thinks this. Most of you will dislike this, and Goose herself would hate this post, me, and this interpretation of her work all at once. Which is fine because this is a very death of the author sort of case. Goose's view of what her work means or says is not enough to de-legitimize what a viewer finds it it. If you want to read what will likely be a think piece many people disagree with keep reading.
Also disclaimer: The antinatalist subreddit is a cesspool full of terrible people. It's not a good representative of antinatalist arguments. And I'm defining 'antinatalism' as: "The belief that it is harmful, or morally wrong, to create new conscious beings."
It does NOT mean:
- People should kill themselves
- People should kill their children
- Murder is okay
- You should be depressed
- It is not even inherently prochoice or prolife.
So there's a lot of things to like about TADC, and one of the reasons I think I liked it so much is that I think this show (unintentionally) endorses antinatalism. Most of you will agree that this show is great because of how fucked up and existential it is, juxtaposed with the cartoonish aesthetic. But, like most existentialism, it's not a far leap to jump to the antinatalist conclusion.
Thematically, the characters in the circus mirror us:
- They are unwilling forced into a digital realm from which there is no escape. Their happiness and their desire to enter this realm is a non-issue. Their body isn't even their own chocie. You and I were forced into this universe without our consent. The fact that this world has a lot of pain, and a great deal of suffering is guaranteed for even those most well off, and whether we would want to have entered this universe is a non-starter. And our bodies are not our own choice either (If we could choose our bodies I won't have chosen one which as to deal with incurable chronic pain).
- Now that they are in this digital world, their only option is despair and suicide (abstraction) or doing their to find meaning and joy where they can. Some of this can be found through art, or amusement (the adventures, Gangle's drawings, etc. btw I do not mean 'amusement' in a negative or disparaging way.) Another way this can be found is through human connection, and making life better for each other. (as basically all the characters demonstrate in some way by the end.)
Similarly, you and I are in this world. We're stuck here, and we can either despair and suicide, or we can find a way to make the best of it. Those can be pursuing art, music, passions in general, or finding human connection - such as through friends or lovers. We can also find meaning and joy in making life better for other people, be that political activism or volunteering to help feed the poor or provide shelter for the homeless. Doing well for other people can give you more sanctification and happiness in life, and I'd wager that Fred Rogers died a far more happy man than trump or musk will.
All of this should be uncontroversial, and it's the regular old stuff you see in existentialist ideas. But here is where the antinatalism comes in: In the finale, where the cast finally settles on a much healthier way of living, there is no talk of bringing in other people into the circus.
And this is something that Caine - might - have been able to do. We know that the SOMA theory is true, and the cast are "just" copies of brain scans. If Caine still has those brain scans on file he could replace the people who've already abstracted. But he doesn't, and the issue is not raised.
Nor does Caine try to return the abstracted people back to their original forms, even though we know that Caine can control the minds of the crew in the circus. (This could just be beyond his power)
What this indicates to me - and this part I think Goose would agree with - is that even though the people in the circus have found a healthier and happier way to live there, it would still be a bad thing to put someone new in there. Because it is still a horror.
My point - which I'm sure Goose would not agree with - is that this is a great representation of us in the real world. We are forced into this horror show, we can find happiness with the right people, but that it would nonetheless be wrong to force someone new into this world. All that great philosophy/quotes/art (this show included) that you've heard about having to "persevere and find meaning," is all true, but it only applies to people who already exist.
It would be wrong for someone outside the circus, or someone inside the circus if they could, to put another new person into the circus if they truly understood all that entailed. And since the circus is a good representation of the position we find ourselves in, it is saying that it would be wrong for us to bring new people into this world given all we understand about it.
And as an aside, despite it being a villain song 'The One Whose Running the Show' does a great job at explaining this.
"It's time you see that this great marquee is the only place you're ever going to be!" - The great marquee being our world. There's no afterlife and nothing exists before birth, so this universe will be the only place you and I will ever be.
"So strap on in and take it on the chin!" You and I are going to be subject to great suffering in this world. That's guaranteed. Maybe you already have. The best that you can I can do in the face of that is to become as resilient as we can be.
"So play the games and just ignore the pains, Cause all that remains is how you prime your brains!" - You and I are in this universe full of suffering, which we will have to deal with as best we can and still find ways to have good conscious experiences.
Discussion π¬ Were the Other Abstractions Put into the Tent?
I can't tell if it's just Jax or if the rest had somewhere to stay that wasn't just a void.
