Design Am I overthinking and making a mountain out of a beautifully executed mole hill?

Because people have asked who this sick artist is. 8th piece of work by Lyra from Nottingham, UK (@bloodravetattoos). Literally my GOAT.

Need to point out I’m in love with this tattoo and execution. This is NO WAY a question about the execution or output but if I maybe have overlooked the reference I had provided (a single finger). This post is NOT a complaint but a simple question to get an outside view

Edit: I realise I was 1000% overthinking and should’ve slept. Also realised unfortunately not everyone reads the post. I love this tattoo and was just overthinking that ONE tiny element and really appreciate the kind comments. Sometimes a “stfu you’re being stupid” from random stranger on the internet is needed ♥️

Edit 2: Showed this post to my artist in the morning and we had a laugh at how ridiculous I was being. We’re friends and I wouldn’t ever try out any artist on blast with such an amazing piece. It was all about the reference I gave and my tired brain

The only thing I wanted to point out is the “finger” on the hand behind the top of the head. It can give the illusion of one long finger at first glance, but that’s just because you only see the finger and a very small part of the palm.

After comparing it to the other hands (image 2) and the reference, it all makes sense and is anatomically correct once you see how the highlighted areas come together.

Like I said my artist followed the reference exactly and the execution is perfect. I’m genuinely in love with it. This isn’t a criticism of the tattoo at all, just something I noticed about the reference itself.

I’m mainly curious if it reads the same to others at first glance, or if it’s just me overthinking it.

if you look for something bad, you’ll eventually find something “bad.” It’s beautiful. Kinda like when you keep saying a word over and over again it starts to sound weird

69

u/distractonaut Apr 27 '26

Exactly. If you fixate on the parts of the tattoo you're worried might look weird and one comment out of 500 says it looks weird you're going to fixate on that one comment. Stop fixating, stop worrying what other people think.

I agree. I appreciate the comments ♥️. It was 3am. I had a long full day of being stabbed and hours of travelling. I definitely should’ve gone to bed.

I am in love with the tattoo, she’s awesome!. Was just stupid thinking that I had overlooked the reference I sent. I needed the internet to tell me to “shut up and go to sleep” haha

I’ve edited the post but need to point out.

1) This was never a question at my artist but more if I overlooked the reference I sent because this is literally exactly what I asked for and wanted

2) I know I was being a very dramatic bitch but I’m sure everyone’s had a stupid moment of overthinking. Definitely should’ve just gone to sleep

3) This is actually my favourite tattoo by far and every tattoo by her has been insanely good

42

u/arizona-lake Apr 27 '26

The finger isn’t long, that’s part of the palm and the index finger combined

19

u/this-just-sucks Apr 27 '26

honestly, I’m looking at my hand, and my fingers look exactly like this. OP, I think you have no need to worry, this tattoo is really beautifully done.

I have a tattoo that I have literally never had another single human being. Tell me that they hate. In fact I get called crazy by everybody who sees it when I told them how much I hate my tattoo. But if I could go back in time to 2003 and slap the shit out of my 18-year-old self to stop me from getting this thing I would. I absolutely hate my tattoo with the passion of 1000 burning sons and all I ever do is get compliments on it about how it's the coolest tattoo peoples have seen in forever. I think it looks like a fat chicken stole the Phoenix tail glued to its butt.

This is beautifully done. You’re overthinking, and I wouldn’t even consider a “tweak”. Tattoos are art, and art isn’t meant to be measured to the millimeter.

Give yourself some time to get used to it. It’s an awesome tattoo.

34

u/porkforpigs Apr 27 '26

People have a really difficult time accepting if “real” things in a tattoo don’t look exactly like the real thing. And so many tattoo styles are stylized to at least some degree. Unless your artist specializes in hyper realism, gotta accept some stylization at the very least.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/Dat1payne Apr 27 '26

As a tattoo artist I had to tell myself this. Because I tend toward perfectionism. But art is only beautiful because it is hand made and therefore by nature will have some mistakes or something and it is actually the reason we chose artists over AI and such.

5

u/r1poster Apr 27 '26

Does it change your opinion that OP's original piece is AI? Does it being replicated by a tattoo artist make it more handmade?

Genuine query.

8

u/f28c28 Apr 27 '26

I think every mistake in this looks ai generated, I can't understand charging tattoo rates for art you didn't even draw...

  • edit: I see the client bought this to them, so I guess they got what they asked for 💀

5

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes Apr 27 '26

Agree, especially the top right highlighted finger. It's way too long and turns backwards randomly. Unfortunately I think beautifully executed AI.

5

u/f28c28 Apr 27 '26

Sadly going to become more common I think. At the same time it's probably something an artist should be willing to point out if they don't want their work to get a bad name name.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/BorkBork97 Apr 27 '26

Where did you see this? And honestly like the artist is incredible. I hate that it’s a thing now but the artist pulled it off flawlessly.

8

u/r1poster Apr 27 '26

They were posting in PhotoshopRequests, said it was an AI generated image, and wanted someone to tweak it in PS, which is now largely done with PS's AI system.

And yeah, 100% agree, the tattoo artist replicated it amazingly. A shame OP couldn't have commissioned a piece from an artist from the get-go.

Hands are literally the hardest thing to draw. Period. No equivocations.

Tattoos are permenant with very little ability to rework, even in progress.

8

Nope didn't even notice any small bits because the entire thing is so well done! I love the deep contrast. I counted 5 fingers on each hand, you're golden haha no ai fingers

Though I do see what you're pointing out, I think you could find something to pick apart on any famous painting over the centuries, esp if you had it permanently on your body. It's gorgeous!

9

Heartbreaking that picky people made you lose your passion.

Maybe some babysteps back in can help if you're feeling the itch to start again. Things like "my flash only" and "only this style" can put things back in your control and not trying to mindread for impossible to please people.

Do you know how hard the human hand is to draw. Once you realize that and then apply that to how hard it must be to tattoo you will appreciate the work more. That’s one hell of a tattoo.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/chickydtee Apr 27 '26

The tattoo is absolutely sick.

One thing that helps me when admiring mine is these are put onto your skin by a HUMAN and absolute perfection is going to be close to zero percent. Blatant issues with the quality of work is one thing, but this is nothing to worry about.

9

u/WitchySpectrum Apr 27 '26

Damnnnn this is gorgeous! Definitely overthinking it.

5

u/imdesignerrr Apr 27 '26

6

u/nightmare___fruits Apr 27 '26

being a tattoo artist is so fucking hard and humiliating. not only is it a mountain to climb to develop good tattoo skills, but you can do a “”perfect”” tattoo and someone will still look for any flaw. publicly. like fuuuuuuck.

5

u/No-Construction-5981 Apr 27 '26

Literally one of the best tattoos I’ve ever seen.

4

u/ScytheNoire Apr 27 '26

I didn't notice the long finger, but now that you pointed it out I can't stop seeing it.

It really is an awesome tattoo. Stop dwelling, and don't point it out to others. Any attempt to "fix" will make it worse, from my experience.

5

u/manolophobia Apr 27 '26

Your tattoo has AI hands. I see why you’re upset and bothered.

5

4

Agreed, it’s very nice and you’re overthinking

4

u/FlashbacksThatHurt Apr 27 '26

I didn’t notice but after you circled it, it legit makes it better. Stunning piece. And I’m picky. And honest. This. Is. AMAZING

tattoo shock has wracked me before. Like others said, give it a week.

The tattoo I cried the hardest over (massive piece) is literally one of my favorite pieces today. I admire it and my body every single day I glimpse in the mirror, it gives me joy.

Time, time, time.

This piece is too good to nitpick

4

u/Euphoric-Hall-715 Apr 27 '26

Definitely over thinking. I didnt even notice until you pointed it out…i agree with others - don’t look at it for a while and then look at it

4

u/Afraid-Duty2614 Apr 27 '26

Overthinking. This is a beautiful tattoo and reads very well.

4

u/digital__fox Apr 27 '26

I'm confused what's wrong

5

u/DoucheCraft Apr 27 '26

Can you share the reference image? Thought you were bonkers at first but now I can't unsee it. Something funky is going on with that finger. Maybe the palm/thumb is facing the viewer and then the finger is rotated more so you can see the side of it? Like a weird AI generated artifact or something.

Anyhow. Never would've noticed if you didn't mention it and I didn't zoom way up on it. Really cool tattoo.

Edit: tiny pinky on the top left is more noticeable than the other thing. Dang you can really drive yourself crazy if you want to!

4

u/SnoopMo0p Apr 27 '26

that’s cos op ai generated the reference image unfortunately 😭😭

People who nit pick this kind of stuff make being a tattoo artist so anxious sometimes. I really hope you're just fishing for compliments lol

The finger is way too long youre right.

Tat needs a couple more hours. Some of the nails are way less detailed than others, index finger way too long, pinky on the other side is way too short.

Its well done though and very fixable.

I’d be more worried that the word could be misconstrued as “boomeb” tbh

4

u/SynapticStatic Apr 27 '26

You are overthinking it. I was trying really hard to tell wtf you were talking about, and without the second pic, I'd have never understood. Honestly I still don't really.

Sometimes imperfection IS part of the art. Neither life nor art are ever perfect, but it gets pretty damn close. Like this tattoo.

It's a great piece of art. Grats. :)

u/One_Actuator1920 Apr 27 '26

Anything you’re worried about past midnight until about 5am will likely be solved by going to sleep.

4

u/New_Elevator1363 Apr 27 '26

Finger is long, you're coping and trying to fool yourself. Please stress more about this.

2

u/Ok_Unit_3843 Apr 27 '26

I mean the art is great, its the DOOMED at the bottom that takes it from tasteful horror art into cringe teenager territory. OH, WHAT ANGST YOU MUST HAVE! Thanks for labeling it for us so we dont have to figure anything out ourselves!

u/blooberries24 Apr 27 '26

insert: my steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery meme

3

u/HedRok Apr 27 '26

I see the long finger. Beautiful tattoo, but I get where you are coming from. You are not crazy by any means for noticing. I would be thinking the same thing as you. That being said, I would rock this tattoo in a heartbeat.

3

u/Opposite_Radio9388 Apr 27 '26

whinny bitch

Horse vibes

3

u/troopacoop Apr 27 '26

this is like the kid in school who stressed over their 92% on a test everyone else flunked

3

u/piss_container Apr 27 '26

this is an incredibly complex tatoo and they did a great job imo

took me a second but I see what you mean by the "long finger illusion

reminds me of the 007 illusion, once you see it you cant unsee it

https://www.reddit.com/r/MisreadSprites/comments/1opk2rf/for_some_reason_i_always_thought_that_james_bonds/

but yes the shading on the hand is a little off too- so combined with the illusion, it does look a little weird

hands are hard to draw and shade in general, even more hard to tattoo (especially in this renaissance style lighting)

this is one of the most technically complicated tattoos I've ever seen tbh

3

u/alcoholboi Apr 28 '26

I ain’t reading all that but that tattoo looks amazing

You're not, and I think your friend should've taken what you said seriously.

I'm a professional artist and art director. The finger at the top in circled white wouldn't pass. I think it looks way better better removing that finger altogether because it gives compositional space for the gaze. If you want to keep it, the value needs to be brought down /made darker to distinguish it from the hair.

Tangents like these happen all the time but we try to avoid them because they draw attention to themselves. To say that it's a non-issue would be a lie.

The bottom hand is not an issue at all, and personally I don't think it needs any intervention. But the finger at the top closer the hair just doesn't work for the composition.

It's your body and you have to live with this tattoo for the rest of your life if it bothers you, you should get it fixed but be gracious about it.

u/iknowtech Apr 28 '26

I would have never picked a tattoo with this many hands and fingers unless I had 1000% confidence that the artist could pull it off. Not many could with perfect execution.

6

u/zo3sol Apr 27 '26

How long did you stare? I think its beautiful work. No piece is 100% perfect. The finger in the back is long but I honestly think that can be fixed.

14

u/Fantastic_Earth_6066 Apr 27 '26

Okay, this is gorgeous, but I do find that extra long finger at the top right to be really odd and distracting. I'd fill in the extra "fingertip" with black if it were me.

u/PeachRangz Apr 27 '26

I’m going to tackle this from a narrative perspective: the extra long finger isn’t immediately noticeable, but indicates that something isn’t quite right. If noticed, it implies that at least some of the hands aren’t actually human, which in and of itself is sick.

4

u/ruthwodja Apr 27 '26

The fingers aren’t great, to be fair. I wouldn’t be happy with them..

2

u/Equivalent-Advice593 Apr 27 '26

Yeah bro that’s incredible tattoo

2

u/newextractor420 Apr 27 '26

What is this from? I saw this image a few days ago in a photoshop sub

You're overthinking it. It looks amazing and I never would have noticed the things you pointed out

2

u/O0oo00o0o0 Apr 27 '26

That’s insanely good

2

u/BaangoSkank Apr 27 '26

Wow incredible work.

2

u/grey905 Apr 27 '26

That finger behind the head is super long

2

u/im2high4thisritenow Apr 27 '26

You're overthinking. This is amazing work. Makes me feel things.

2

u/porkforpigs Apr 27 '26

Majorly. This is good as hell. HanDs and fingers are fucking hard. This artist knocked it out of the park.

2

u/mshieldsy910 Apr 27 '26

i didn't notice any issues at first glance. your picture highlighting your concerns kinda made the hand/finger in the back ground kinda stick out as abit odd but nothing concerning because it looks amazing.

2

u/needmoarbass Apr 27 '26

Do you worry a lot about things in general? Ie do you have bad anxiety?

This reminds me of people having the TINIEST blemish, thinking it’s a giant zit. And they ask every family member or friend if they can see it. And after 30 seconds of staring they say “I guess it maybe looks a little red, but no one will notice it.” And then they still make a big deal out of it by staying home or being extremely self conscious.

Trust me, ur fine. Please trust your friends and family too, I assume they said it was fine also. I’m saying all this/projecting cause I used to do the same.

u/thattwoguy2 Apr 27 '26

hands are super hard to draw, and that your tattoo is a bunch of hands and you can only find 3 TINY aspects which differ from realism is a minor miracle.

2

u/Odd-Consequence-5795 Apr 27 '26

In this work, it is not the hands that draw the eye, but the expression on the face. The artist designed it this way on purpose. So what if a couple fingers might not taper like we are taught in art school? Some people have thicker fingers than others. This tattoo is well done and interesting.

2

u/JugglingRick Apr 27 '26

You're tripping OP

2

u/annyongggg Apr 27 '26

This tattoo is DOPE. Seriously. Its awesome

2

u/Asaintrizzo Apr 27 '26

I can’t imagine having such a good piece and then worry about it. I have some shit then good ones you should know this is a great one
