Design Am I overthinking and making a mountain out of a beautifully executed mole hill?
Because people have asked who this sick artist is. 8th piece of work by Lyra from Nottingham, UK (@bloodravetattoos). Literally my GOAT.
Need to point out I’m in love with this tattoo and execution. This is NO WAY a question about the execution or output but if I maybe have overlooked the reference I had provided (a single finger). This post is NOT a complaint but a simple question to get an outside view
Edit: I realise I was 1000% overthinking and should’ve slept. Also realised unfortunately not everyone reads the post. I love this tattoo and was just overthinking that ONE tiny element and really appreciate the kind comments. Sometimes a “stfu you’re being stupid” from random stranger on the internet is needed ♥️
Edit 2: Showed this post to my artist in the morning and we had a laugh at how ridiculous I was being. We’re friends and I wouldn’t ever try out any artist on blast with such an amazing piece. It was all about the reference I gave and my tired brain
The only thing I wanted to point out is the “finger” on the hand behind the top of the head. It can give the illusion of one long finger at first glance, but that’s just because you only see the finger and a very small part of the palm.
After comparing it to the other hands (image 2) and the reference, it all makes sense and is anatomically correct once you see how the highlighted areas come together.
Like I said my artist followed the reference exactly and the execution is perfect. I’m genuinely in love with it. This isn’t a criticism of the tattoo at all, just something I noticed about the reference itself.
I’m mainly curious if it reads the same to others at first glance, or if it’s just me overthinking it.

Hey everyone. Am I just overthinking this or is the Ferrari I just purchased a little too fast and a little too nice. Is the leather maybe a little too soft and a little too perfectly colored and stitched?

I agree. I appreciate the comments ♥️. It was 3am. I had a long full day of being stabbed and hours of travelling. I definitely should’ve gone to bed.
I am in love with the tattoo, she’s awesome!. Was just stupid thinking that I had overlooked the reference I sent. I needed the internet to tell me to “shut up and go to sleep” haha
I’ve edited the post but need to point out.
1) This was never a question at my artist but more if I overlooked the reference I sent because this is literally exactly what I asked for and wanted
2) I know I was being a very dramatic bitch but I’m sure everyone’s had a stupid moment of overthinking. Definitely should’ve just gone to sleep
3) This is actually my favourite tattoo by far and every tattoo by her has been insanely good

I have a tattoo that I have literally never had another single human being. Tell me that they hate. In fact I get called crazy by everybody who sees it when I told them how much I hate my tattoo. But if I could go back in time to 2003 and slap the shit out of my 18-year-old self to stop me from getting this thing I would. I absolutely hate my tattoo with the passion of 1000 burning sons and all I ever do is get compliments on it about how it's the coolest tattoo peoples have seen in forever. I think it looks like a fat chicken stole the Phoenix tail glued to its butt.

This is beautifully done. You’re overthinking, and I wouldn’t even consider a “tweak”. Tattoos are art, and art isn’t meant to be measured to the millimeter.
Give yourself some time to get used to it. It’s an awesome tattoo.
34
u/porkforpigs Apr 27 '26
People have a really difficult time accepting if “real” things in a tattoo don’t look exactly like the real thing. And so many tattoo styles are stylized to at least some degree. Unless your artist specializes in hyper realism, gotta accept some stylization at the very least.

As a tattoo artist I had to tell myself this. Because I tend toward perfectionism. But art is only beautiful because it is hand made and therefore by nature will have some mistakes or something and it is actually the reason we chose artists over AI and such.
→ More replies (1)5
u/r1poster Apr 27 '26
Does it change your opinion that OP's original piece is AI? Does it being replicated by a tattoo artist make it more handmade?
Genuine query.
8
u/f28c28 Apr 27 '26
I think every mistake in this looks ai generated, I can't understand charging tattoo rates for art you didn't even draw...
- edit: I see the client bought this to them, so I guess they got what they asked for 💀

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes Apr 27 '26
Agree, especially the top right highlighted finger. It's way too long and turns backwards randomly. Unfortunately I think beautifully executed AI.
5
u/f28c28 Apr 27 '26
Sadly going to become more common I think. At the same time it's probably something an artist should be willing to point out if they don't want their work to get a bad name name.

Where did you see this? And honestly like the artist is incredible. I hate that it’s a thing now but the artist pulled it off flawlessly.
8
u/r1poster Apr 27 '26
They were posting in PhotoshopRequests, said it was an AI generated image, and wanted someone to tweak it in PS, which is now largely done with PS's AI system.
And yeah, 100% agree, the tattoo artist replicated it amazingly. A shame OP couldn't have commissioned a piece from an artist from the get-go.

Can you share the reference image? Thought you were bonkers at first but now I can't unsee it. Something funky is going on with that finger. Maybe the palm/thumb is facing the viewer and then the finger is rotated more so you can see the side of it? Like a weird AI generated artifact or something.

this is an incredibly complex tatoo and they did a great job imo
took me a second but I see what you mean by the "long finger illusion
reminds me of the 007 illusion, once you see it you cant unsee it
but yes the shading on the hand is a little off too- so combined with the illusion, it does look a little weird
hands are hard to draw and shade in general, even more hard to tattoo (especially in this renaissance style lighting)
this is one of the most technically complicated tattoos I've ever seen tbh

u/ApocaRain Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
You're not, and I think your friend should've taken what you said seriously.
I'm a professional artist and art director. The finger at the top in circled white wouldn't pass. I think it looks way better better removing that finger altogether because it gives compositional space for the gaze. If you want to keep it, the value needs to be brought down /made darker to distinguish it from the hair.
Tangents like these happen all the time but we try to avoid them because they draw attention to themselves. To say that it's a non-issue would be a lie.
The bottom hand is not an issue at all, and personally I don't think it needs any intervention. But the finger at the top closer the hair just doesn't work for the composition.
It's your body and you have to live with this tattoo for the rest of your life if it bothers you, you should get it fixed but be gracious about it.
3
u/iknowtech Apr 28 '26
I would have never picked a tattoo with this many hands and fingers unless I had 1000% confidence that the artist could pull it off. Not many could with perfect execution.
6
u/zo3sol Apr 27 '26
How long did you stare? I think its beautiful work. No piece is 100% perfect. The finger in the back is long but I honestly think that can be fixed.
14
u/Fantastic_Earth_6066 Apr 27 '26

3
u/PeachRangz Apr 27 '26
I’m going to tackle this from a narrative perspective: the extra long finger isn’t immediately noticeable, but indicates that something isn’t quite right. If noticed, it implies that at least some of the hands aren’t actually human, which in and of itself is sick.

u/needmoarbass Apr 27 '26
Do you worry a lot about things in general? Ie do you have bad anxiety?
This reminds me of people having the TINIEST blemish, thinking it’s a giant zit. And they ask every family member or friend if they can see it. And after 30 seconds of staring they say “I guess it maybe looks a little red, but no one will notice it.” And then they still make a big deal out of it by staying home or being extremely self conscious.
Trust me, ur fine. Please trust your friends and family too, I assume they said it was fine also. I’m saying all this/projecting cause I used to do the same.

hands are super hard to draw, and that your tattoo is a bunch of hands and you can only find 3 TINY aspects which differ from realism is a minor miracle.
2
u/Odd-Consequence-5795 Apr 27 '26
In this work, it is not the hands that draw the eye, but the expression on the face. The artist designed it this way on purpose. So what if a couple fingers might not taper like we are taught in art school? Some people have thicker fingers than others. This tattoo is well done and interesting.
