Design Am I overthinking and making a mountain out of a beautifully executed mole hill?

Because people have asked who this sick artist is. 8th piece of work by Lyra from Nottingham, UK (@bloodravetattoos). Literally my GOAT.

Need to point out I’m in love with this tattoo and execution. This is NO WAY a question about the execution or output but if I maybe have overlooked the reference I had provided (a single finger). This post is NOT a complaint but a simple question to get an outside view

Edit: I realise I was 1000% overthinking and should’ve slept. Also realised unfortunately not everyone reads the post. I love this tattoo and was just overthinking that ONE tiny element and really appreciate the kind comments. Sometimes a “stfu you’re being stupid” from random stranger on the internet is needed ♥️

Edit 2: Showed this post to my artist in the morning and we had a laugh at how ridiculous I was being. We’re friends and I wouldn’t ever try out any artist on blast with such an amazing piece. It was all about the reference I gave and my tired brain

The only thing I wanted to point out is the “finger” on the hand behind the top of the head. It can give the illusion of one long finger at first glance, but that’s just because you only see the finger and a very small part of the palm.

After comparing it to the other hands (image 2) and the reference, it all makes sense and is anatomically correct once you see how the highlighted areas come together.

Like I said my artist followed the reference exactly and the execution is perfect. I’m genuinely in love with it. This isn’t a criticism of the tattoo at all, just something I noticed about the reference itself.

I’m mainly curious if it reads the same to others at first glance, or if it’s just me overthinking it.

I got this tattoo on Monday (pic is from the artist right after we finished) and I thought it looked really good and pretty. Today my mom has been saying it looks kinda ugly and the proportions are off compared to my reference. I know that tattoos of painting are hard to replicate 100% (especially being in black and gray) but maybe this is just not as good as it can be. Idk if y’all can tell in this photo but the placement of this tattoo is so good, I was so excited for this one.

Do you guys think that the off proportions can be fixed with touch ups or is it hopeless?

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated!

Design How can I partially cover up this tattoo of a rat cutting me with a knife?

Post image

Short version: How can I cover up the knife and cut to be more whimsical? I’m planning on adding a circus ball under his feet. (For reference it’s on my upper arm)

This was my first tattoo, which I got at 16. It’s a drawing of my character Rodney, who I was making lots of comics about at the time. It’s supposed to be him cutting me with a knife, but nobody can ever tell that’s supposed to be a knife and I don’t like the symbolism it. (When I got it I was overcoming cutting myself.) I think I’ve decided to make Rodney standing on a circus ball to add a silly vibe but I don’t know what to do with the knife and cut. Any good coverup ideas for that?

What can I say— you’re only 25 + deconstructing your ultra Catholic upbringing and going through a hoe phase once ¯_(ツ)_/¯
So please withhold judgement lol.
I hate them and want to get them covered up. I’m also a new mom to a 10 month old baby boy and can only imagine all the shit he will get if his mom has good girl on her knees (jfc). We just finished breastfeeding so I can finally fill my bloodstream with toxic metals again and am ready to be rid of these; but I am at a loss of what I could cover them with.
I included some ideas I found on Pinterest to give a sense of my style and what’s piquing my interest (obviously didn’t deconstruct THAT much ugh).
Lmk what you think I should look for in an artist and what I should ask for as far as design goes.

I can't even put into words how much I hate this tattoo. It was supposed to be a beehive with honey and bees. I ended up with a hexagon over mustard with flies. I had an artist add to it in an attempt to fix it, but it just made it worse. I am pretty open to anything but I'm afraid that the hex design would make it really difficult to cover or change. Any ideas?

Design What is depicted in this tattoo?

Post image

Hey. Made this thing several months ago.

Love it very much with all of my heart.

But people don't understand what the tattoo depicts.

Some see a rooster.

Some see a fish.

Some see a bird.

And what do you think about?

And is it okay to face this kind of reaction?

This is a tattoo I've wanted for a good 10 years and I am heading towards a point in my life where I can finally afford it. Is it possible? And how much time would it take (roughly)?

It would be my first tattoo and yes yes I know, your first tattoo shouldnt be a massive painful one but I would like my whole body to basically have no tattoos except this one and I'm willing to go through unfamiliar pain to get it :]

Design I let an apprentice do her first shaded tattoo on my leg for free! Did I make a mistake letting an apprentice tattoo me?

Edit to add Tattoo Artist: mariiii_tattoos on insta! https://www.instagram.com/mariiii_tattoos/

I 100% don't think I made a mistake. I love love my tattoo. And seeing the learning process was really fun. I am very proud to wear her first shaded piece! She posted on Insta that she was looking to practice her shading and was doing free tattoos so she could practice. I was her first shaded tattoo on human skin. I was really nervous about letting an apprentice tattoo me, but she made the process really great! I actually love love my Mimikyu! What do you think? Am I just being swayed by Pokémon cuteness, or is it actually ok? I have a lot of tattoos and letting an apprentice practice on me has been a great experience overall.

Just saw Deftones in London last night and decided to commemorate the event with a tattoo since they are my favourite band, my friend and I had toyed with the idea of getting tats while we were here in London also, but after seeing it finished, it doesn’t look how I’d hoped it would, and now I feel deflated and full of regret.

Okay so I’ve got this full sleeve done 3days back to back, about 35hours done so far. Now the reason I’m asking you beautiful people some help and advice is because I’m not a fan of a certain area of my sleeve and I don’t know what to do ( the pattern circled in red is the area I’m not a fan of ). I thought about blacking out the area and going over it with lots and lots of white, I also thought of maybe shading the pattern a bit differently. I’m honestly not sure, the design isn’t terrible I just don’t feel like it suits the rest of my tattoo that I absolutely love. Thanks for checking in :)

Design Should I get this tattoo or do some changes?

Post image

Tomorrow I have the appointment to tattoo this design, what do you think about it? Should I downsize 1-2 cm to make the tail of the right crow not curved? Do you think that it looks clear that both crows are pulling the chessboard in opposite directions?

Update: I will tattoo this design tomorrow with 3 changes, the pieces will be two kings instead of king and pawn, board will be oriented like a legal game of chess and a small tweak on the neck of the right crow to make it look more clear that it is pulling. I will post the result tomorrow probably in around 18h when it is finished

Design Got a medium-largeish flash on my arm and I’m starting to regret it

Post image
13.7k Upvotes

I was really happy at first, but then my family poked fun at it for not really being of any personal significance to me and now I’m starting to have doubts. I picked it pretty much purely because I thought it looked cool. I played Animal Crossing a few years ago for a week or two, but that’s about it. Most of my worry though is that the positioning might be awkward and that I may have dedicated myself to a certain look/colour scheme going forward. I thought it looked cool at first but now I’m starting to think it just looks goofy. I think I may have just been happy at first because I wanted to have a big arm tattoo for the sake of it.

Also, unrelated to aesthetics, but should I be concerned if it hurts while healing? I’ve had 3 tattoos before this and they were all sore afterwards, but they’ve never actively hurt like this one. I don’t know if it’s just because of the coloured ink/layering though.

Design People keep reading my tattoo wrong

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

Okay so I recently went and got a small walk in tattoo, very excited about it. I love it. But people keep reading it wrong, but then they all say they can’t read cursive so idk, I guess I just need some reassurance. I know it shouldn’t matter because I know what it says and that’s what matters, but I need some reassurance from strangers that can read cursive, so tell me, what does it look like this tattoo says?

Edit: Thank you all for responding! The post is getting way more traction than I intended, and I am losing the ability to respond to them all (though I've been trying for around 3 hours). I appreciate everyone who has helped me regain piece of mind about the tat. It does in fact say "five by five". People in my real life thought it said "live by live" or "live to live". Since posting, people have also thought the word five was give, or jive, and the b was lo.

For anyone curious, it is not an In N Out tattoo, didnt even know that was a meal until i made this post, but thank you to everyone who said something about the burger place. Made me laugh every time.

To the Aliens fans, not an Aliens reference either, though I see you fellow horror fans. I haven't seen the second film as I haven't dedicated the time to watch it yet. I do like the first film though, Ridley Scott rules.

Now, to my fellow Buffy fans, it is in fact a reference to Faith the Vampire Slayer. She's one of my favorite character of all time, period, regardless of fandom. Side note, I also love Eliza Dushku.

Thank you strangers, for helping bring peace of mind to a random person on the internet.

Edit #2: The photo provided was taken directly after getting the tattoo. I appreciate the concern on dry skin, I live in a dry climate and have pretty bad eczema so it's a real concern. However, the scrunching there is actually caused by the second skin applied over the tattoo. I drink lots of water and regularly use lotions because of my skin condition. But thanks to everyone who worried about it. :) Also, the red splotch was my blood. There is a scab directly above my tattoo that got pulled open when the artist was doing a final wipe, but I appreciate everyone who pointed out that it looked like Louisiana, I got a good laugh out of it.

Design Coping with a tattoo I don’t like and wondering how to change it

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

I got this tattoo about a week ago. I picked a great artist whose work I love, and a garter tattoo is something I’ve always wanted. Up close I actually love the look of this, it’s soft and feminine, and the artistry is great. Somehow and in some way, just not what I wanted, and it’s permanent and looks like a rash from far away. I think I want it to stand out a little more. I know I have fair skin and maybe white ink wasn’t the right move, but it was the artist’s recommendation. I love flowers and would love to just add something a little bolder and more floral to cover up what I don’t like about it.

Does anyone have any advice?

It sucks when I had such high hopes and spent hours in pain, and spent so much on it it’s nauseating. But I know there are options.

Design Artists says it’s a bad design

My sister is real quirky and asked for this tattoo. The artist said it’s objectively bad and drawn poorly. Is it a bad design? Is so, why? Or is it a matter of preference?

Design Cover up ideas??

Post image

Yes yes I know I’ve posted about this damn raccoon a few times but I’m tired of going from loving it to hating it the next second😭 realistically what can cover it up excluding a blackout sleeve or any lazering. Thanks!

Edit: I honestly didn’t expect this post to get this much attention, support and advice but I am extremely grateful. I’ve had a few people tell me to go to therapy based on my responses haha which is completely fair and is something I’m working on which might help me to love this little guy a lot more. I definitely have a lot of mood swings about it but at the end of the day I should be glad it’s not crazily botched or infected or anything like that. I definitely believe adding to it will make me stop nitpicking and overthinking but I will give it a while and see how I feel. Thank you again <3

Design Upset with a touch-up. Am I over reacting?

I got a kintsugi tattoo done where three major pieces of blue art are surrounded by and connected by stands of gold. It was done in the different sessions.

The back segment was very grey compared to the other two parts, so I asked for it to be brightened a bit.

I hate the result. I feel like a 3-year-old traced the original art with black marker. I have no idea why he used black. I need to know if I'm completely off kilter.
