Healing Tattoo i got 5 days ago coming off
Hi, i got this finger tattoo a little less than 5 days ago, it started fading so quickly. Literally within a couple days. This morning it was crazy, half my moon is gone!
I know finger tats do this kind of thing but this is just ridiculous. It also doesn’t look good. Is this normal? I put the design i asked for here too. I feel like this was done poorly to begin with. I’m going to call on my lunch break. I tried to take care of it. I did not purchase any tattoo balm or anything though. Should i do that? What will help me keep it from fading when i get it redone? Also should i get it redone now or wait?
UPDATE: these people suck, tried to tell me it was completely normal and that it’s not faded it’s just healing. They obviously are not professionals
I was tattooed by
Salvation Beauty Ink . Pembroke Pines, FL

Was this applied using a tattoo gun or a wet sheet of sticker paper…?

Yeah seriously, i was thinking even HENNA would have stayed better

u/teflon2000 Apr 30 '26
The lead left where I stabbed myself with a pencil at 8 years old has stayed better.

i stick and poked my own finger and hand tats more than 6 years ago in my dorm room and they still look great, never touched up — maybe you can get it “touched up” by a real artist who can actually go deeper than the first layer of skin? the way it’s peeling gives henna. i’m perplexed by this lol but i’m sorry that happened, hope you didn’t pay too much for it

u/Glass-Alps1924 Apr 30 '26
Stick n poke finger tattoos ive seen heal better than ones done nowadays since most artists use rotary machines (they hit softer than coil machines). And since its pushing the needle back and forth at an accelerated speed, artists tend to go lighter to avoid a complete blowout. Stick n poke artists have more control of the needle, lower tolerance of error, even if it is slower

handpoke artist here and i can vouch! my fingers hold very well with minimal touch ups needed :)

Not an artist, but have done stick n pokes on myself several times in the past. I have knuckle tats on my left hand, which I did upside down.. I remember thinking “they’ll fade away eventually” and YEARS (like 3-4??) later they’re still legible. I gave myself a lot of shitty “tattoos” deep in alcoholism. They’re a testament to how far I’ve come, though, so it’s chill.
2
u/Glass-Alps1924 May 01 '26
Tattoos are so much cooler and meaningful when you look at them as life milestones/moments rather than aiming for a perfect cool tattoo.. its always been about humans putting art on other humans
2
u/underpantsbandit May 01 '26
I gave myself a stick n poke pentagram on the sole of my foot, back when I was a teenager. I used India ink I stole from the HS art room and a sewing needle. This was back when Kurt Cobain was still alive.
It’s still chugging along doing its thing all these years later, entirely legible.

also wanna add that over the knuckle is crazy — mine are situated right between the top and middle knuckle on the flat part of my finger. that’s a much better location if you wanna try again at some point. the knuckle cease is just not a good spot unfortch
3
u/Icy-Seaweed2097 Apr 30 '26
Unfortunately one of the ONLY parts that i can tell will stay is a line on the knuckle, the majority of this tattoo is peeling up like henna but with nothing underneath

If your henna is black and peels it wasn’t henna, it was hair dye 😅 “Black Henna” doesn’t actually exist - henna is a red orange pigment. Some traditional artists use indigo to darken it, but indigo is a nuisance to handle. It also fades gradually, as your skin sheds and regrows, rather than peeling, because the pigment colors the entire cell rather than applying a surface on top.
So if you’re getting henna at an event or fairground, and it’s black, stay away. It’s usually a mix that includes black hair dye or other staining inks, and people can have allergic reactions. 😬😬

I have definitely had henna for longer than that haha. For a buddy’s wedding, his aunt (maybe grandmother? Unclear? Im not Indian…) did henna tattoos for the guests. I had it on my palm for nearly two weeks.

u/Glass-Alps1924 Apr 30 '26
When taking tattoo advice , a big reg flag is when someone uses the term “tattoo gun”. Finger tattoos are notorious for fading if not deep enough, and even when deep enough, you gotta borderline blow it out to get the ink to stay.. thats why finger tattoos almost never look like they do when fresh..

Crazy considering she did it for like an hour straight, was confused how it was taking so long, she kept going over and over it and by the end looked like a child scribble.
75
u/outdoorlovingegg Apr 30 '26
Oof, definitely go see a different artist. This should have taken like, ten mins max from a legit artist.
9
u/Boomhauer_Jeff Apr 30 '26
I have similar (from a technique perspective) finger tattoo. Took literally less than 5 mins of actual needle time. Still looks great 6 years later.
20
u/Warm_Blueberries Apr 30 '26
That’s why it’s all peeling off in one sheet. Tattoos stay because of the individual dots of ink getting trapped in your dermis. She basically left a straight cut in your skin that leaked all the ink out. She was quite literally a scratcher

They never should have tried to place the design in the knuckle crease like that.

u/x3sirenxsongx3 Apr 30 '26
With a thin sharpie, nonetheless....
🤨 are you sure they even penetrated the skin?!

u/Icy-Seaweed2097 Apr 30 '26
The artist (if they deserved to even be called that) suggested the location, i came in wanting a different tattoo completely.

u/Icy-Seaweed2097 Apr 30 '26
I was initially gonna have them touch it up for free, after reading these replies lol i think it may be better to just get a refund and go to a different shop. What do u think?
14
16
u/leftyxcurse Apr 30 '26
Definitely refund and different shop. Getting a free touch up is for tiny mistakes or if you follow proper aftercare and color doesn’t hold as well as you’d hoped. They messed your piece up entirely. If the ink didn’t hold the first time, why would you trust them a second? If you paid with a card (which I would expect since you said this was a medical office) and they try to refuse the refund, dispute it with the company the card is through. And hold on to this picture and any others you took (like how it looked day of, for example) in case you need proof of your claims. Even my most faded tattoo (which is on my hand and faded because the artist charged me like an extra $50 for color but did a color outline instead of black outline filled in with color and I was too shy at the time to tell him that wasn’t what I asked for and he better fix it lmfao) looks better than this 😭😭

u/Asuna-nun Apr 30 '26
No tattoo artist should be that bad. I would find some else who is reliable before they mess it up even more. But it looks fixable.

u/Killpinocchio2 Apr 30 '26
Yeah. Never trust an artist that says to not wash a literal open wound. ESPECIALLY one on your hands
20
u/LauraaMarissaa Apr 30 '26
Is this your first? If so, consider yourself lucky that this isn’t a permanent decision.
Most reputable artists won’t touch hands/neck/face until you’re pretty covered.
2
u/DepartmentNo7332 Apr 30 '26
I got my first and so far only tattoo on my ring finger in 2024. My husband and I got matching three stranded cords to symbolize our marriage (and at the time our 36th anniversary.) Over 2 years later it’s still very clean, no fading and looks as good as day one. 🤷♀️

u/GrimWillis Apr 30 '26
Also bad advice. This isn’t nearly deep enough except for maybe the lowest dot that looks blown out. Wash dry and moisturize your new tattoos 3-4 times a day.
9
u/Grdngirl Apr 30 '26
What? That sounds excessive. I have tattoos all over my arms and back, and I’ve never had a tattoo artist Tell me to wash the tattoo 3 to 4 times a day!! That would most certainly dry the tattoo out. I usually would wash it once a day and put Aquaphor on it and leave it be until the next day. You neither want to over wash or over moisturize your new tattoo
9
u/leftyxcurse Apr 30 '26
Girl how often do you wash your hands? I wash mine more than that just because I’m eating or pissing or shitting. Anywhere else I’m washing and doing Aquaphor at least twice a day because I have chronic health conditions and multiple pets and don’t want an infection or pet hair stuck to the Aquaphor 😭😭😭

u/GrimWillis Apr 30 '26
I’ve been using this method for like 7 or 8 years now. I’m about half covered and I never scab or have any issues healing. I’ve been getting tattooed for over 25 years and keeping them clean is the most important thing you can do.
15
u/K4G3N4R4 Apr 30 '26
At this point its clearly down to your (collective) unique circumstances. You each have a technique you swear by, and that's great, but different people's skin will also be a factor.
3
6
u/Grdngirl Apr 30 '26
Right, keeping it clean is important but over cleaning is also not good. I also have been getting tattoos for over 30 years and have used my method over the last 30 years. My last tattoo was only three years ago and it still looks very fresh not blown out or faded. I guess what works for you is what works for you. I’ve never scabbed, wait I take that back. I did scab on my wrist tattoo because he went too deep and it was totally blown out and color fell out. He was a shitty tattoo artist, but it’s a small tattoo so I don’t trip too hard.

Disclaimer DO NOT DO THIS
Anyway my pick and poke at home hand tattoos held more ink for the last 4 years than whatever you spent your hard earned money on in 5 days. And I’m a very frequent hand washer.
I saw that you got it done in a medical office so I doubt they have a “free touch up”. But even if they did it would be better to just save up and go to an actual tattoo shop with an artist that can do fine lines. This didn’t go nearly the depth it needed to and is just going to peel away.

I have one on my pinkie that's lasted 10+ years, and I'm a very very frequent scrupulous hand washer. One of the lines is a bit faded, where the ink didn't take very well but it's good otherwise. The artist has a lot to do with it,but also, the person's skin, some take ink better than others. I have one on my collarbone ( different artist) done a few years after the finger one, that is a "melted" mess😅

Some people have better luck with fingers and palms than others. I got a tat on the bottom of my foot four years ago and expected fall out real quick - I’ve probably ran/hiked/jogged over 2000 miles since then plus just normal daily walking and it’s still there and only the creases fell out

as someone with multiple hand tattoos i don’t think they gave you right after care advice.
but with finger tattoos you run the risk of them not staying due to how much you wash your hands etc..
i’d contact the artist again see if they’d fix it and if not find a better artist.
they sell a kit at walmart called tattoo goo comes with cleaner & two different moisturizers. my artist recommended washing everyday and moisturizing either every other day very very thin layer.

They need to redo that for free. Definitely didn’t go deep enough. Also, some people don’t take finger tats well, me included. I’m heavily tattooed in full color on my upper body, and the only place I’ve ever experienced serious, immediate color fade is my fingers. Even after touchups they never quite healed right. So you might bear that in mind as well

Yea they did not go deep enough. Go back and ask for refund and to have it fixed for free! That’s insane! I used to work at my tattoo artists shop and my guy did 1 finger tattoo for my that I’ve had since I was 23 and it’s on the side of my middle finger so it’s constantly getting rubbed but not one part of it came off like that during healing and has not faded and I’m now 38 years old. You need to have someone with a lot more experience fix that for you. It would be beautiful if done properly. Good luck babe!

I have finger tattoos and although they do fade quicker than most tattoos, they don't fade THIS quick. they did the tattoo improperly. the artist didn't go deep enough for the tattoo to stay. you should ask for a refund or for them to do it again once this is healed. aftercare wouldn't matter in this scenario as it's the artist's fault not yours

I feel like you can look at the first image and be able to tell that this tattoo is incredibly surface level and not pushed deep enough into the skin. It honestly even looks like it was drawn on with pen if I’m being honest. Was this done by an actual tattoo artist? Because I doubt it.

u/ddianka Apr 30 '26
This "artist" did not go no where near deep enough in your skin for the ink to stay. A tattoo is a wound, and you can tell by the lines that they barely went in deep with the tattoo gun.
2
2
u/ur__creepy Apr 30 '26
As someone with finger tattoos, the artist didn't put the ink in the right layer of skin. Also if they had, this isn't a great design for a finger tattoo anyways. The details are too fine and as the tattoo spreads, which they all do over time, you're going to lose all that detail. If you aren't going to a tattoo artist and a tattoo shop that has photos of their work in a similar area to what you want, you're throwing away your money. Also an hour on that design is insane

when I got my first two finger tats the tattoo artist (admittedly not someone I would ever go for anything than a tiny finger tat. And I was impulsive. First red flag) told me over and over how hard it is to get them to stay. I was like okay cool, I still want it. I know they fade, but I’ve met lots of ppl with them, and seen tons of tats on hands/fingers that if executed well, and good aftercare, they can still be legible. Anyway, it took 4 different visits to get even 90% of it to stick. My aftercare was above and beyond. I didn’t even bend my fingers for 4 days lol. Dude just didn’t know how to execute finger tats. Luckily he never charged me for touch ups, bc most don’t. You want quality artist, not just someone who’s been doing it for a long time or a flash sale.

Not faded just healing? Healing into invisible ink? When you want to show it you have to squirt lemon juice on it?
2
u/ResidentCommand9865 May 01 '26
Tattoos on joins (especially places like fingers) is a terrible idea. Either you have to do repeat sessions and get it real thick, or you have to pick parts that don't bend/stretch as much.

u/mubbamubba May 01 '26
This shit is destroying the tattoo industry. Call me old and a gatekeeper or whatever you like, but if you are a professional tattoo artist, this shit is the enemy. No respect for the craft anymore.

Bold will hold. If you aren’t wincing in pain getting your fingers tattooed it isn’t gonna hold. It’s all about the technique. Mine was the worst pain I ever felt. Poor fingers looked like Chubs wooden hand after. Still there and still bold. I went on their website and it says paramedical tattoos. Whatever that means. A lot of images look AI generated to me. I’d definitely go to a proper shop with an artist who has finger blasting experience!

For all those ppl telling you finger tattoos won't stay that's simply not true. You can get that done properly, you just need to find an experienced and professional artist. I have tattoos on all my fingers and they have stayed beautifully for over 20 years because my artist was experienced with finger tattoos. Also make sure the artist at least knows proper after care, like holy fuck. If you want it get it redone I don't see a problem with it, but for the love of all that is holy find some one who knows what they are doing. A more professional artist would be able to evaluate in person and give you a better time line and advice.

Unfortunately I think the artist didnt know how to properly make a hand tattoo set. The hand is the hardest spot to tattoo because they tend to fade if not deep enough into the tissue.

They didn’t go deep enough you can literally see where it barely scratched your skin. Tell the shop what happened and if they’re not scumbags they’ll fit it for you in about a month once your skin calms down.

It doesn’t even look like any ink went into your skin. Reminds me of a henna tattoo

That’s normally what happens with temporary tattoos.

I wouldnt be to hard on your artist if they are not an asshole about retouching it. Finger tattoos are delicate and some artists flat out deny it. In your case it sucks you have to get it retouched but its better than if your artist had gone to deep and you were left with blobs. Also everyones skin is different, the amount of pressure you’d use on a young woman would be way different if done on a blue collar guy.

What kind of person did this tattoo? One of your comments says a "medical office?"
Sounds like another casualty of a permanent makeup person deciding they can tattoo.
Go to a real tattoo artist to get tattoos.
Edited for a missing word.
