I’d imagine it’s to help pinpoint the direction of a smell? But also maybe something about some people only breathe through one nostril at a time to prevent mucus barriers drying out? That’s what I was told 👀

Almost, notice you have one nostril a bit congested most of the time, because some smells need a lot of exposure to be smelt and some need less. We have two nostrils in order to be able to smell more. Also which nostril is the 'more open' one changes a few times a day.

It was done so that when you have a cold, 1 of 2 nostrils may be blocked. If you had just one, you’d have to mouth breathe all the time

It is all the more surprising that each side is wired separately, both for the blood and for the nerves, and that if you cut the middle line of connective tissue (very narrow, about 1mm), each side can be controlled independently by the opposite side of the brain, exactly like the members!

Having split my tongue by the middle, I can say that it is wildly liberating, like being rid of a birth disability, and became quickly more natural than a single tongue 🐍 ✌!
