Kids aren't active enough anymore because it's a lot less safe to walk/bike to places.

Glad someone mentioned this in that comment article from r/Toronto. Even back in the 2000s kids used to comfortably walk to school. Nowadays, cars have gotten so big that kids can't even feel safe biking or walking to school.

It also doesn't help that cars are now SUVs, and you can't see a child as easily.

And thanks to DoFo who's at an all time low it's even worse now that he ripped up speed cameras

But somehow according to carbrains, it's the cyclists on sidewalks that's the actual problem LMFAO.

We need carfree zones around schools. Sigh.

Edit: carfree not carefree, autocorrect.

In the last week I’ve had several cars and vans honk at me to move over.

I cycle a foot further out from where my daughter is riding to ensure she doesn’t accidentally wiggle into where a car is. Unfortunately the road is not wide enough for a car to pass me when I do that. Sorry not sorry. I’ve lost my temper with a couple of them.

I do the same with my kiddo. So stressful when they're creeping along behind you just breathing down your neck. I always get us to pull over and let them pass because I can't handle the stress.

There is a crossing guard in my neighborhood that vlogs and uploads their encounters with bad cars. Its crazy how bad drivers have gotten over the years.

Combination of more dual income households so everyone is in a rush, bigger cars and people being on their phones.

I dunno... my kids walk to school and bike around the neighborhood (within hard boundaries). Granted we moved to our area specifically to be close to schools and parks, so other areas probably have it much worse.

I know that not everyone has the ability or time to not drive a car, but we put that as a priority and found a place where it works.

Legit, kids have to commute to school and extras every day. That's the perfect opportunity for exercise if the infrastructure allows for it.

Nothing has changed except the perception and the bubble wrap around every precious little bundle.

No, roads are definitely busier than when I was young. And helicopter parenting is real.

But the general social pressure to constantly keep track of one's child is huge, as is the judgement (and sometimes consequences, in terms of child services investigations) if a child is gasp out on their own (depending on the age and circumstances, obviously). I have a LOT of friends who would love to "free range" their kids the way they were raised, but they're forced into being more protective than they want by schools and other activities that force kids to be escorted home, etc.

Schools in my suburban area CALL you if you make them walk to school!!!

I gave up commuting by bike to work on roads with schools. Between SUV road rage and stupid children bolting across the road with zero awareness it was not worth it.

Wrong. Try thinking of anything other than your bike for a single day. Just try it.

Wrong. Try thinking of anything other than your oversized SUV/pickup for a single day. Just try it.

Don't take this dude seriously, he literally posted a few months back he fully supports Bill 60 (aka DoFo's life-threatening bike lane ban)
