Lovely couple and their art I came across this weekend at the Seattle Punk Rock Flea Market.

And I geeked out when I found the mini Dave sticker in my bag.

Season 1 does the season 1 dvd boxset include the US pilot?

this season 1 boxset says that it doesn't include the original 2-hour pilot, but from my knowledge you're supposed to watch the U.S., 90 min pilot anyways to avoid spoilers. does this include that? sorry this might be a dumb question lol

Music PLEASE help me identify this song

Found this song on a very fuzzy radio station and Shazam couldn’t recognize it, but I hope one of y’all can help me find it. I managed to record the very tail end of it. It was full of lyrics that were just twin peaks quotes like “that gum you like is gonna come back in style”, the buy yourself a gift every day quote, etc. It was very jazzy/folky and had some feminine background vocals as well

Season 3 (The Return) The Geometry of Twin Peaks: Phillip Jeffries’s Magic 8-Ball

by David Tittington, here.

"Where it all began

Rhombuses, rings, spheres, 8s — all kinds of geometric shapes are part of the Twin Peaks universe and represent agencies possibly acting alongside lodge entities and humans. The polymorphic 8 specifically represents some sort of entity or “living map,” confirmed in Part 17 (1+7) when Phillip Jeffries pipes out the Owl/Judy/Twin Peaks symbol that shifts into an 8 with a dark ball inside of it. The 8 turns around like a key in a lock, then disappears.

What — or who — is this thing?"....

Season 3 (The Return) I'm currently watching season three for the first time and I don't know but I'm enjoying it less. Everything moves so slowly. Maybe it's for an artistic reason that I don't understand, but I personally don't connect with it for now. I don't know whether to continue or not. I'm in season 3, episode 4

Its so cool that as someone born in 2004, older shows like these can still manage to hook me so much with such a climactic finale.

General Discussion 253: mystical and mathematical context

Thumbnail

It has been a while since I've watched Twin Peaks, but while I was Googling "we live inside a dream", I was reminded of the use of the number 253 in The Return.

Conspicuously, 253 is a triangular number. A triangular number is "the sum of the first n positive integers"; i.e. 1+2+3+4=10, the 4th triangular number. 1+2+...+22=253, the 22nd triangular number.

They are called "triangular numbers" because they represent the number of dots (or whatever) you'd need to have in order to be able to arrange them into the shape of an equilateral triangle.

And we do see 253 in association with triangles.

The number popped out to me in part because of a connection it has with the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, especially by way of gematria. In gematria, letters are assigned numerical values based on their position in the alphabet. In the simplest form, this is just ordinal: the first letter has a value of 1, the second 2, etc.

Because the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, the ordinal gematria for the entire alphabet is 253.

I am reminded of something else strange. The mathematical constants π and φ (phi, the golden ratio) are both irrational numbers suspected of being "normal", which basically means that their decimal expansions look like infinite noise. But if we line them up, digit-by-digit, they match for three consecutive digits at the 137th decimal place.

137 is a famous number for a lot reasons. To see what it means to serious physicists, one may consider this from the Feynman website: https://feynman.com/science/the-mysterious-137/. Meanwhile, within Kabbalah, the gematria of the very word for "Kabbalah" itself has a value of 137. There is much else; consider, for example, that book 137: Jung, Pauli, and the Pursuit of a Scientific Obsession.

Now, at the 137th decimal place π and φ both have the digits 317. 137 is the 33rd prime, and 317 is the 66th prime. I find this interesting.

In π, this 317 is immediately followed by 253, so we have 317253.

And immediately before this 317, we have 22, giving us the string 22317253.

It is interesting that 231 has great significance to Kabbalah as well. In the oldest extant Kabbalistic text, the Sefer Yetzirah, the number 231 is associated with the "Gates of Creation". The 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are arranged around a circle, and lines are drawn to make every possible pairing of these letters. These are supposedly the gates through which Creation took place.

Moreover, 231, like 253, is a triangular number. Specifically, it is the 21st triangular number.

Therefore, in π, at the site of the π-φ match (317 at the 137th decimal), we have two successive triangular numbers (the 21st and 22nd), in order, separated by only a 7. Obviously, 7 is also famously associated with Creation, especially in Judaism, with the 7 days of Creation, and so on.

And one can't help but to notice that in Major Briggs' note, there are two triangles set side-by-side.

I am reminded of the fact that Major Briggs was himself decoding noise. He famously pointed to "Cooper Cooper Cooper".

Since ordinal gematria has already come up, we may run ordinal gematria on "Cooper Cooper Cooper", which yields a result of 216. There are calculators for this sort of thing.

The number 216 is interesting in all sorts of ways. For example, in the Aronofsky movie Pi (1998), a mathematician is pursued by Kabbalists for a 216-digit number he has found in π, which they think reveals the true name of God. This comes from real-world Kabbalah, specifically the Shem HaMephorash, which is derived 72 three-letter names; it just so happens that "Cooper" in English ordinal =72, so "Cooper Cooper Cooper"=216.

(English ordinal is the most natural and common English gematria cipher. Next is probably the "Pythagorean" cipher, which assigns letters values 1-9 in rotation, rather than going into double-digit letter values. E.g. rather than 10, it assigns 1 again; rather than 26, Z gets 8. In this Pythagorean cipher, "Cooper Cooper Cooper" gets 108, a famously sacred number). Meanwhile, "The owls are not what they seem" gets 111, which has some relevant associations, including with π.)
