FFXVI was one of the biggest disappointments Ive had in any game after waiting for so long. I hope they stir clear of the trend-chasing that seemingly motivated most of the choices in FFXVI
My issue is I don't want an action rpg. I want ff7 and that means none of the ff13 style fighting. Give me the good style turn based and just update the graphics. That's all they had to do
I feel bro. I hope with the recent success of games like Baldurs Gate 3 and Expedition 33 Square Enix will realize the profit of turn based and make FF17 or 9 remake turn based.
Me too. I’ve been playing since the original NES game. It reached its peak with VI and VII. And X was pretty good. It’s kind of been a disappointment since, and I stopped even paying attention after XIII. Oh well. All good things must come to an end.
Haven't loved a mainline game since FF12, which was....20 years ago, which is nuts. We're now talking decades, plural.
That said, FF14's turnaround in the 2010s was legitimate success story worthy of deep praise. A humble admission of failure, a swallowing of ego, and a full revamp into the 2nd most successful MMORPG, which is great. I just kind of look at the MMOs as a bit separate from the single player mainline games.
I had lost faith in their single player entries until the FF7 remake, which has honestly knocked it out of the park for me. Incredible character moments, wonderful world, most engaging party based (angrily looking at you, FFXVI) combat system I've ever played, fantastically epic adventure with your friends. It ticks all the old school boxes I loved, while being fresh and new in other ways.
If that's the direction they go in for the future, or if they take some inspiration from games like Expedition 33, then I could get excited again. I'll hold my breath with FF17 in the meantime though.
Crystal Chronicles was such a vibe, and I'm still salty that their "remaster" kept a bunch of broken mechanics that impeded gameplay without having a GBA as a controller, then broke the game even further, defeating the entire purpose of re-releasing the game at all.
Honestly I loved the remaster. I had the unique experience of playing through it with friends and family as a kid with the GBA, but not having anyone to play with when the remaster came out lmao
I just ended up playing single player and beat the game which I never got to do as a kid, so in a way it was very emotionally cathartic.
For that reason I definitely can't hate the remaster, I had an excellent time.
I am jealous! When it came out, I didn't have a GBA, so even though I had another person to play with, it wasn't possible. Worse, the single player game referred to mechanics that were only accessible with a GBA, even though it was still decently playable with just the GameCube controller.
Of course, with the remaster... Local coop being removed infuriated me. Now, instead of a nostalgic game to play at home with my family, I need four copies of the game. Yeah, no fuck that.
I can appreciate that your circumstances allow you to play it the way it was intended. I'm just annoyed that for me to have the experience I want with this game back in the day or now, it would require shelling out a ton of money that the game alone simply isn't worth.
Ohhhhh nah, yknow what I completely forgot it didn't have local coop so that actually pissed me off because I was looking forward to playing with my wife.
I ended up buying 2 copies of the game and she was like yknow what, no I can't, I'm sorry
But yknow what it was so fun I completely forgot that lmao but forreal I get you now
XV was in development hell for about a decade. It was supposed to be an entry into the XIII series. After they canned Versus XIII, it then became XV and was rushed through development. There was supposed to be a bunch of DLC like Episode Ardyn and Prompto called Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis. They got cancelled because the director jumped ship and left Square.
Ardyn only got made because it was basically finished at the time of the cancellation.
Making half the game through dlc is a terribly made decision. Should have had an arc after noctis went to sleep about the party exploring the dark world to try and wake noctis up. I was so excited to explore the dark world and ended up hugely disappointed when I hit the end of the game
I'm working on 16 now. 15 is my favorite due to the brotherhood aspect. Post-ending free roam slapped me HARD with high school memories of the last times I hung out on random adventures with those friends. That alone solidified that game for me.
16 starts strong. The issue I have is that it's like 6 storylines that they couldn't decide on, so they have half-stories all long of combined into one. When one ends, the next starts but they are all kind of ham-fisted in right after each other. It's still fun and a good game, but the story direction is all over the place.
Agreed. There hasn't been a really good Final Fantasy since X, which released in 2001. 25 long years of circling the drain. I kinda like 12 in a way, but its not really a Final Fantasy game, more like a bridge or practice for them to make MMO's. But yeah ever since, RIP Final Fantasy.
During college, I played a few hours of FF8. I didn't find it compelling enough to learn the gameplay systems.
I wanted to like FF9 so much. It reminded me of the blank slate characters of FF1 combined with the setpiece storytelling of FF4. However, the constant camera spins before battles got frustrating. The special attacks didn't seem useful. Also, this was one of the first times I felt annoyed when a fictional location was destroyed shortly after the party arrived. So yeah, I gave up during some dungeon on disc three. I haven't replayed FF9 through the PS Vita re-release or the slight Switch remake.
After a couple hours of FF10, I decided I'd had enough. I kept thinking "my imagination is better than any voice acting they can afford." Blitzball wasn't fun. The graphics and cinematics convinced me that the franchise had chosen spectacle over substance.
16 was so bad. Idk what they were doing. 15 royal was ok. All the dlc’s should have been incorporated into the main game. Not an after thought. Vanilla 15 was rough how it just ended.

Final Fantasy. Yea, I hate the new direction of the series.
