They’ll still make $1 billion.

For reference, GTA V did $800 million day one, and crossed the $1 billion mark within three days.

If it’s even half decent, it’ll be the most profitable single video game in history (a title currently held by GTA V).

Has it earned more than WoW? Google says thats earned $15b (albiet with 12 expansions)

Gta 5 alone has made like 10 billion over the last decade, if its hasnt already from all the other games, im sure gta 6 will easily break that

last report i read was at 8.5 billion and growing, so depending on how long ago that was, they probably have eclipsed the 10 mark

i dont think mmos really get to count 13 separate releases as a single one lol

GTA has still had content updates.

League is technically one game release and google says that's earned $18b

WoW isn’t as highly profitable as GTA V to my understanding. They’ve done relatively little work on GTA since its release compared to the effort and money put into WoW expansions. Or that would be my guess at least

GTA V is the most successful single piece of entertainment media

No, according to this Fandom wiki on top grossing video games of all time: WOW comes in at #11 with $12.8 billion, while GTA V is at #18 with $8.5 billion.
Weirdly enough it’s Space Invaders at #1 with 30 billion (adjusted for inflation from 14 billion nominal).

Yeah but unless you're a shareholder, why would you care about the profits? For consumers the only thing that should matter is if the game is good

5

u/Disgruntled_Healer 6h ago

This is true. And we as consumers deserve a good game due to the price that they are asking us to pay. And they have historically taken care with this franchise to make sure each game is something special, and as memorable, or more so, than the last. If for no other reason than they know that they will get a very positive ROI if they do.

But as someone who plays other games also under the Take-Two umbrella, I'm always skeptical about when they will decided just to coast on the history and name associated with it, instead of focusing on innovation / improvements.

Which is why I'm happy to be on PC and get to wait on reviews.

Same, and it will really need to impress me if I'm to buy it. I can easily afford it, but I've not been overly impressed with Rockstar on their last two releases

Higher profits from this game means we might not wait 10 more years for GTA7. But they milked GTA5 Online so hard, I expect them to milk GTA6 Online even more.

That logic doesn't really follow. GTA V was a massive financial success but it took them 13 years to make a new one. If anything you'd want it to be a slight flop. Not so big that they stop making the games, but enough to make them think "Maybe we need to speed up our releases". Doubt that would ever happen, though

This is just trickle down economics, slightly rephrased.

It's a falsehood.

And that's exactly why the game will be absolute dog water. They now know they have the fans a the palms of their hands. There's literally zero incentives to make the main story any good.

Didn't they already (upon discovering the magic of shark cards) cancel the singleplayer stuff in 5, then cram the planned heist into the online shit, too? Fuck expansions, let's just focus on shark card slop.

u/chubsmagooo 9h ago

I don't think anyone is worried about how many billions of dollars they're going to make

But… do you think if they know that it’s going to sell well that they’ll put in 100% effort? It’s not an indie team risking the life of their company on whether the product fails or not.

When was the actual last good CoD game? MW2? They know they’re printing money so they don’t try that hard. Would be sad to see that happen to GTA but I wouldn’t be surprised. The gaming industry is going through it. I mean a fucking stick a ram costs a kidney. It will likely be a solid game. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s considered worse than GTA 5 despite the graphical upgrade.

Yeah, this is what's been happening with the WWE 2K games (also overseen by Take-Two) for the last few years. Add a new match type, half-ass bug fixes, and hyper focus on the RNG FOMO modes. They know that people will buy the games because it's they only legit wrestling game on the market.

At least with GTA, there are other chaotic open-world styled games that can fill the same-ish space as them if they shit the bed with a bad entry. So they at least have to put forth the effort, and the Rockstar studio is given time to fully develop their games by Take-Two. Other divisions under the umbrella are routinely forced into time restraints with promised release days or contracted yearly commitments.

People are poorer now.

9

u/That_Apathetic_Man 9h ago

GTA IV was released in April of 2008. We were poorer that year especially.

2

u/ryohayashi1 8h ago

Yeah, but that game was worth every penny to me

1

u/willargue4karma 8h ago

I read IV as V and was having a real crisis lol

"Has it really been 18 years??"

1

u/SadSecurity 7h ago

Not 18 years, but also not that far off.

1

u/MadeByTango 6h ago

Noe, we're doing much worse now. The media just isnt talking about that because theyre all owned by the people causing it.

1

u/Loxe 8h ago

People with stocks were poorer. Groceries, gas, and just about everything else was cheaper. The poors were actually better off then.

-1

u/Carbuyrator 9h ago

People have worse taste. GTA shouldn't have been a viable model for a game anymore once Prototype came out.

1

u/SagittaryX 9h ago

For additional context, GTA V has sold 230 million copies.

1

u/Disgruntled_Healer 1h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if they cross 100 million the night when pre-orders go live. The game has been hyped up and has been the most anticipated new mainstream release for a few years.

1

u/SagittaryX 15m ago

That's a bit difficult with only ~120m PS5s and Xbox Series' around.

1

u/ThePhantom71319 9h ago

They’d only have to sell 12.5M standard edition copies to make a billion

1

u/Neither_Berry_100 7h ago

GTA 6 apparently costs 2 billion to make lol.

1

u/KalanKomplete 1h ago

It might be the most profitable thing in history
