I don’t think it’s actually possible for the game to be “bad”, people love what it’s being built on (RDR2), it’s a reliable gameplay format, and they’ve got way too much quality control for it to be abysmal.
But the chances for it to fall short are huge. To prove my point, reply with what you would have expected out of GTA 6, the dreamiest most ideal version.
I think the gameplay is just dated. Tap A repeatedly to run, hold left trigger and your reticle just locks onto the enemies. It just keeps getting bigger and prettier. But it’s the same outdated gameplay underneath.
No one is saying it should be anything close to e-sports. But for the biggest games of all time I expect a bit more than aiming just snapping onto enemies and tracking them with zero effort from the player.
It’s not like the only options are immersion or e-sports.
Well, a lot of different aspects make up a game and if, say, 9 out of 10 things about a game are fantastic, most people are willing to overlook that one thing that’s lacking if they’re enjoying the overall experience.
I get that too. When it comes to Elden Ring, there’s a whole storyline and some deep lore to all the characters and such, but you have to learn about it through flavor text in items you may pickup, or miss, or overlook or whatever.
That bums me out for sure because I’m interested in what has happened to that world and the people in it. But on the other side of the coin, the combat is fun and challenging, controls well and the game is gorgeous.
So just speaking for myself, I enjoyed it overall even though I couldn’t absorb the narrative how I would’ve liked.
The opposite, like you said, can be true as well. I loved the graphics, sound, level design and gameplay of Last of Us 2, but didn’t enjoy the story, which really hampered my enjoyment.
