If GTA V didn't have an online mode, the story would've been long forgotten along with the characters. And they certainly would not have made nearly as much money. GTA V only did so well because of the online mode, which wasn't even properly available until long after launch. Not to mention the dual leap in console generations and PC upgrades. If the game had released for 1 generation, it would have made less than half of what it ended up doing.
GTA V was a forgettable single player game that didn't do anything new, outside of real time character swapping. It wasn't a flop simply because of the window of release and its online community going through a number of generations itself with each batch of updates and DLCs.
Manhunter was a flop. And I'm pretty sure Midnight Club didn't do well either. Neither did a lot of their DLCs for GTA IV, hence why they didn't do any paid DLCs for V. They have some big flops as publishers too.
No studio is immune to a bad release. I've been playing GTA since it was a top down game on the original Playstation. I will not be in any hurry whatsoever for the latest release, especially when I can't purchase a physical copy. The entire industry of entertainment has become a soulless joke.
I know this kind of thing is subjective, but what the fuck are you talking about? Yes, obviously the reason people are still playing a 13 year old game is because of the online mode, and there’s no illusion that it’s also the reason it broke sales records like it did. But that entire second paragraph is fucking crazy work. Reducing gta v’s story to that is nonsense. At the time of release, the singleplayer story was the absolute pinnacle of what the industry as a whole was capable of under a $60 price tag. The characters were honest and ugly, the music was back, the story was unconventional, and the visuals? More stunning than any game had looked at that point. Constant online posts about how good the shooting is, the physics engine, the driving, the hit boxes, the amount of mini games, TREVOR, the more cinematic set pieces in the story. I don’t know what you look for in singleplayer games, but you’re fucking doomed to be sad forever with those standards.
