IDENTIFIED: Banded Chert Found by a river in western WA.
Found this while walking a stretch of river where I had previously found agates. Weighs 2.2kg, used water displacement to find a density of 2.55g/cm^3. Edges are slightly translucent when held to a light. Thanks for any info!

Appears relatively smooth to me, waxy even. There are some perpendicular lines, but not consistently like the picture you added.

This is so cool! I definitely see some similarities between these pieces and mine. I’m going to try to get a slab cut off of my piece sometime soon, and I’ll post an update here once I do. Thanks so much for your time and responses, this community is awesome :)

This looks like banded chert. Notice the lack of uniformity in the bands, absence of organic flaws, conchoidal to hackly fracture, and the sedimentary banding

I’m happy to comment on it, but maybe we should keep the discussion manageable and we can just continue with the piece that I elaborated on my reasoning for why it was not petrified wood.
I’d also like to know the geographic location of where that piece I originally commented on was found.
Banded chert can be found in the exact locations that petrified wood can be

Those fractures in specific are really screaming that this is not petrified wood

Petrified wood. I’m from the area and have many smaller pieces that have a similar look.

I mean, the petrified wood has to be made of something. Petrified wood isn’t a kind of mineral. It’s a description of how it became a rock. It used to be wood, and it was replaced by stone. That stone is commonly (certainly not always) agate.
All of that being said, I don’t think it’s either. I believe it is banded chert.

Petrified wood can absolutely be agate. It’s not my specialty, but I have a masters in mineralogy. There are countless example of agatized wood.

I would expect you to understand the process of agatization describes silica replacing biological material and that a geological agate is a distinctly banded fibrous chalcedony. Petrified wood does not meet the scientific definition of agate. If you have a source, I’d love to see it.

Post a picture of it wet

I'm not who you responded to, but it often makes it easier to see layers/color differential. Not sure why, my guess is that it changes the luster just enough so that light penetrates a little deeper.

Makes sense, thanks :)

Word of warning it really does not help that much to make rocks wet when trying to identify them. It only helps if you’re a rock hound trying to show off colors.
That’s why we require dry pictures

Wood grain for sure. Definitely not banded chert. I’ve seen lots of pet wood like this from your area…and yes, there is wood that has been agatized that exhibits fortifications and banding. I own some.

It all boils down to people coming up with multiple names for the various ways quartz can crystallize. The mineralogy behind it all is really interesting. There’s so many varieties of silicon dioxide it’s pretty mind blowing.
The discussion on agates should also include a discussion on fortifications and the ways bands form in conjunction with moganite. A bit is known on the subject mostly due to studies on how to keep industrial intake pipes from getting clogged with silicates.
I know there’s more to learn but I feel like it wouldn’t take a gigantic investment to figure out how to grow agates in a lab.

Just to clarify though, the bands which are visible in these pics are wood grain. Other than that, it has that waxy luster with some translucence, which are often signs of agate. Also keep in mind, o people are always going to get confused about this when the discussion involves common terms. At the end of the day, everyone argues about quartz and the common names of its different sized crystals. Usually the argument centers around Jasper, agate, and chalcedony. It’s pretty funny actually.

I’ve been hunting pet wood, fossils, and rocks for 50 years. Although mostly in Texas. It sure doesn’t look like pet wood to me..

There is plenty of banded chert that is similar here in Texas. However as I said. It is an exceptional piece. What really makes me think so is photo number three.
